Thomas: So where are my sweets?
Shop Owner: Through here. You don't like shops then?
Thomas: They're boring, there's never anything to do.
Shop Owner: Pity. Still, I expect you'll get used to them.
~ The Shop Owner's words to Thomas before turning him into a shop dummy.

The Shop Owner is the main antagonist of the Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids episode, "Sweets". He is an elderly shop owner that appears to sell sweets at first, but after witnessing his experiments, it's revealed that he is actually a child kidnapper that turns them into shop window dummies after luring them into his shop, condemning them to a fate worse then death.

He was voiced by Nigel Planer

Biography[]

Before the episode takes place, the Shop Owner had kidnapped at least 6 children already after luring them into his shop and turned them into shop window dummies that he would give to shops later on in the episode. He eventually notices a bratty kid named Thomas Ratchet making shopping miserable for his mother to deal with, so he sets out to punish him for his misdeeds.

After Thomas runs away from his mother due to her not buying sweets for him, Thomas is soon lured to his shop after noticing it is a sweet shop and bangs on the door repeatedly until the Shop Owner appears and gets annoyed at Thomas as the sign he put up said "bang three times". He then lets Thomas into his shop, telling him "he has been expecting him for quite some time".

After entering the shop, Thomas gets shocked as he believed the dummies in the Shop Owner's shop were human bodies, but soon thinks they are just shop window dummies. The shop owner then questions Thomas on this, saying "why would he keep bodies in a sweet shop?" And then proceeds to ask Thomas "what is his poison?" After Thomas tells him the kind of sweets he wants, he tells Thomas that they are his favourites, which shocks Thomas at how he knows. He then proceeds to tell Thomas that he knows that when he goes shopping with his mother, he is the worst behaved boy in the world.

Thomas then begins to question if the shop window dummies really are just dummies as he believes he saw their eyes move, but the Shop Owner just laughs it off and lures Thomas into his mixing room where he makes his shop dummies and questions Thomas on him not liking shops. Thomas then responds that he finds them boring because there is nothing to do, which then prompts the Shop Owner to say "pity. Still, I expect you'll get used to them" before scooping Thomas up in his net and dropping him into a giant mixing bowl of papier mache and turning him into a shop dummy.

After Thomas wakes up, the Shop Owner grins at his creations after putting Thomas with the rest of the children and then either brings them to a clothing shop, or sells them to it and gets away with everything he's done with him not being seen again.

Personality[]

Not much is known about the Shop Owner due to his enigmatic nature, but from the small bits we see, he shows himself to be manipulative, successfully deceiving at least 7 children into falling for his act as a sweet shop owner so he can turn them into dummies. He is also shown to be sadistic, as he smiles as he prepares to turn Thomas into a shop dummy and grins at his creations despite knowing the children are aware of their fates and can't do anything about it. He also shows sympathy towards Thomas's mother for having to put up with his mischief every time they go shopping, showing he isn't completely heartless despite his cruelty.
