My offspring, when you reclaim all the Xenospheres, my Advent will come and then everyone will know who I am and why your universe was created. And you'll know how important your appearance in this universe is, and how vital it is that the intruders disappear. Until that day, you'll have to live in ignorance, and I apologize for that. It's tragic that conscious beings have to live and die without knowing the purpose of their existence.
~ The Signer

The Signer is the deuteragonist of the 2017 video game Megaton Rainfall.

Creator of our universe, progenitor and mentor of the protagonist, the Signer is the one who sets the game's events in motion by declaring a universal culling of unworthy lifeforms, save for one Chosen People: the humans of planet Earth.

He was voiced by Michael Berger.

Powers[]

The Signer is the creator of our universe in Megaton Rainfall, and he seemingly did so by counting atoms in his mind to form bodies of increasing complexity until sentient life appeared and evolved on its own. He presumably lives as a mortal in the universe above the one seen in the game. He interacts with the universe through a "Xenocube" that possesses similar powers to his offspring, and he has enough power over the universe that he could erase it all in seconds. His only limitation is that he can't make "meticulous" alterations to the universe, such as destroying individual intruders.

Personality[]

The Signer is very dedicated and intelligent, as he went through the tedious and mentally challenging process of cultivating a universe in his mind to find out if an even higher being might've created the one he lives in, and made further deductions on existence documented through the Signs. In conversation with his offspring, he's softspoken and polite. Although he expresses sympathy for mortal beings and their existential plights, he seems to only really value them for what they can contribute to his calculations and is more than willing to discard them if they're insufficient or disruptive. Even with his offspring it's uncertain if the Signer cares for them on any level or just sees them as a tool.

Due to the scale at which he perceives everything, the Signer doesn't find it worthy of punishment if his offspring accidentally lets some dozens or hundreds of humans die, as long as the casualties don't surpass an unacceptable threshold for that city. Overall, the Signer largely lacks a sense of morality on the scale of his mortals, only seeing universal systems to uphold for his never-ending calculations.

Biography[]

The Signer created the universe "below his feet" as an experiment to determine if a higher being had created the universe he lives in, under the presumption that if he were able to do it, it's certain that someone did the same to create his native universe, and so on throughout the Tree of Existence. He placed Signs on several planets scattered throughout the universe, monoliths containing information on the true nature of existence as he's discovered it. Until the beginning of the game, the Signer saw only one intelligent civilization, later designated as intruders. This civilization used a "forbidden power" to hide the existence of Earth from the Signer until the beginning of the game, seemingly knowing that humans would be designated as the Chosen People otherwise. They then planned to use the power of stolen Xenospheres to travel to Earth and destroy it so that they can ensure their own survival at the time of the Signer's advent.

Megaton Rainfall begins as the Signer reincarnates a human into an "interdimensional superbeing" he henceforth refers to as his offspring, designed for the purpose of destroying the intruders and protecting humans where the Signer can't on his own. The Signer mentors his offspring throughout the game and rewards their efforts with new powers, while occasionally enlightening them on the nature of the universe and the purpose of mortal beings' existence. After the invasion is thwarted, the Signer erases the entire universe save for Earth and grants his offspring the World Multiplying Ray, ordering them to multiply Earth and the human race until they fill the entire now-empty universe.
