~ Red telling Andy about the Sisters' horrific and torturous nature. |
The Sisters are a supporting antagonist organization in the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and its film adaptation, which was shortened to The Shawshank Redemption.
They are a group of serial rapists, led by Bogs Diamond, imprisoned at Shawshank State Prison for rape. When Andy Dufresne is convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover and sent to the same prison, they choose him as their new prey.
Biography
Bogs Diamond formed a gang together with other inmates convicted of rape in Shawshank Prison to exploit the weaker prisoners. It is unknown how long they had been active, although it began before 1947, as that was the year Andy Dufresne came to the prison.
The second day of Dufresne's life in Shawshank, Bogs catches sight of him for the first time and develops an immediate lust for him, which he reveals in the communal showers where he tells Andy that he could be a "friend" to him.
The Sisters stalk Dufresne and contrive plots to trap him. Despite Andy fighting as well as he could, the Sisters were far more determined to subdue and sexually abuse him. Andy was sent to the infirmary repeatedly for the injuries they inflicted on him. Things continued like that for two years.
In 1949, as Andy's fellow inmates were watching the film Gilda, Andy requests asks his friend Ellis Boyd Redding to smuggle in a poster of Rita Hayworth (the beautiful actress who portrayed the titular character in the film above, as well as the titular celebrity in the novel) into the prison. Redding replies that it Will take a few weeks, but he will eventually obtain it. When Andy leaves the cinematic room he is ambushed by the Sisters once again and is dragged into a workshop, where they attempt to force Andy to perform oral sex on them. The plan is revealed to be futile, as Andy tells Bogs that he intends to bite off whatever they put in his mouth regardless of any injuries they inflict on him. Rather than rape him, The Sisters then brutally beat Andy. He ultimately survives and taken to the infirmary, while Diamond was sent for one week of solitary confinement.
This assault proved to be the beginning of the end for Bogs, for in the two years of his imprisonment, Andy had become very valuable to the prison staff, using his accounting skills to become a financial planner for the guards and other employees. After the week of solitary confinement, chief prison guard Byron Hadley surprises Bogs in his cell and beats him within an inch of his life. This was likely on the orders of Hadley's superior, prison warden Samuel Norton.
Bogs Diamond is left crippled, mute and dependent upon a feeding tube. He is transferred to a minimum security sanitarium, leaving the Sisters leaderless for good. They feared to lay a finger on Dufresne again as they would most likely would end up like Bogs.
After Byron Hadley is imprisoned for his crime, it is most likely that the Sisters would target him for revenge.
