The Smile Entity, also known as The Monstrosity, is the titular main antagonist of Paramount Pictures' Smile film series.

It is an evil demonic entity responsible for an ongoing series of gruesome murders, which it facilitates through a “curse” which passes from victim to victim in a “chain” stretching back to an unknown beginning. When the demon first begins to manifest, it torments the cursed person over a prolonged period of time (almost a week) through illusions and various other malicious tricks before moving on to possess them, whereupon it will use the victim's body to commit suicide in front of a nearby witness, who then becomes the demon's next host. Before driving them to suicide, the demon always forces its hosts to wear a sinister, unpleasant smile.

Some theories suggest the demon consumes the souls of its victims, adding to its collection of terrible grins in this manner. The demon can alter a person's perceptions to mislead them into thinking they’ve managed to beat it, before resuming the haunting as before. As such, the only way to be rid of this entity is to pass on the curse which carries it on to another person.

Portrayals[]

In the first film, it was portrayed by Marti Matulis, who also portrayed The Apparition from the eponymous movie, while the nightmare-mom-version of the entity was portrayed by Kevin Keppy. In the second film, it was portrayed by Trevor Newlin, who also portrayed the Scorched Xenomorph in Alien: Romulus. Although it disguised itself as various other people in the film;

Appearance[]

The Entity has the ability to shape-shift and take on the appearance of any individual nearby, though it usually takes on the appearance of those close to its current victim, such as Rose's mother, Carl Renken, and Dr. Madeline Northcott. The demon’s actual form is much more horrifying, to the point where simply looking at it for a prolonged period will drive a person insane; a tall red humanoid with multiple smiling mouths nested one into another, with beady eyes that are perfectly round. Its arms are lanky and thin, as are its legs, with long curled fingers upon hands that resemble those of a half-flayed corpse.

Smile Entity - Smile 2

The Entity in its true form.

Before possessing Skye, the Entity's true form is quite different. It is much larger at around 12 feet in height, with thinner arms with longer fingers on its hands. The waist and thighs can be seen halfway down its body. The Entity's head is slightly rounder with a smaller forehead. Its eyes, with have unique streak like patterns lining the sclera, seem to have eyelids upon closer inspection. In addition to its multiple jaws, from which a tongue can also be seen, more crooked smiling mouths of varying sizes run down its neck as well as a couple on the back of it's head. The change in form could be the result of how much it had been consuming, getting larger with each soul it devours.

Personality[]

The Smile Entity is shown to be an evil, malevolent, black-hearted, intimidating, sadistic, ruthless, vile, cruel, and heartless being that appears to find great pleasure in psychologically tormenting its victims, driving them to complete insanity before ultimately making them kill themselves. It has also shown itself to be cunning and deceitful, as well as skilled in imitating other people and making its current host lower their guard through horrific hallucinations, as it had presented itself to Rose as her therapist and had engaged in conversation with her until her real therapist called and the entity revealed itself by smiling. When alone with its victims, it enjoys mocking and taunting them, luring them into a false sense of security with hallucinations and making them think they can defeat it before crushing their hopes completely.

It is also shown to be highly intelligent and conniving. First, it infects its hosts which allows it to play mind games in order to fester deeper into the vessel. When the victim has finally broken, the demon possesses them and forces them to kill themselves. It even knew about Rose's chat with Trevor earlier when he selfishly pushed her away during its conversation with Rose when it disguised itself as her old therapist. Meaning it followed her every location Rose went to, taking pleasure out of watching her panic and being rejected by people who selfishly refused to help her, even the ones she trusted. And later was able to trick her into thinking she defeated it but no, and knew Joel would track her down so he'd use him next.

Despite that most people on their own selfishly and foolishly turned their backs on Rose and the Entity's other victims, not listening when they needed them, the Entity's actions turn friends into enemies, changing its victims behavior's, which in the movie made Rose bitter after being pushed away by immature adults. Which made Rose finally insult people back even the ones she trusted, as she tells off Trevor after he cowardly called Madeline for help when its only been a day since she told him what's happening and immediately overreacts to her problem and walked away from her like nothing and then later Holly for comparing Rose's behavior to their late mother, when this situation had nothing to do with her, causing Rose to bitterly call out Holly's selfish childish behavior, and telling her she knows nothing of what happened between Rose and their mom because she selfishly abandoned Rose before she died. Even Rose started being rude to people who never wronged her, even those who actually cared but didn't know what was wrong.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • (Illusionary) Shapeshifting: The demon is implied to be capable of shapeshifting (being claimed to be able to "wear people’s faces like masks" and "disguise itself to look like people"). It can freely shape-shift into any kind of individual at will, as is shown when it appears disguised as Laura, Carl, Stephanie, Holly, Rose's deceased mother, Rose's therapist, and Joel, maintaining the façade until it revealed its true appearance to Rose. It also impersonates the voice of a First Line Security woman when Rose's house alarm goes off. It can also alter the appearance of the individuals it is impersonating, changing into a demonic version of Rose's mother as well as a version of Skye's younger self with large, beady eyes and multiple sets of jaws nestled within one another. Since the Smile Entity exists within the host's mind, its shapeshifting is likely more illusionary rather than a literal physical/biological transformation.
    • Multi-Shapeshifting: To make things even more horrifying, it can impersonate multiple people at once, choosing to torment and reveal, appearing as smiling versions of all her backup dancers at once in her apartment.
    • Vocal Manipulation: The Smile Entity can change the pitch of its voice to sound as if several distorted voices were talking at once or even make its voice just sound very husky.
  • Curse Manipulation/Inducement: The Smile Entity is associated with a curse (or is possibly the curse itself) that transfers it to another individual when viewing the host's suicide.
  • Selective Visibility: Only those who are cursed/infected is able to see the Smile Entity.
  • Mental Entity Physiology: While the Smile Entity's existence is left ambiguous, it's at least shown to be some type of mental being that exists inside of the mind of the host. Considering the demon’s presence is in the host’s mind and is only visible to those who are cursed, it acts similar to a dream character or a "solid/tangible" hallucination.
  • Superhuman Strength (Possibly Illusory or Metaphysical): The Entity appears to possess extraordinary physical strength, as seen when it seemingly strangles victims or forces their jaws apart. However, certain scenes—such as Skye’s on-stage experience—indicate that these events might only occur within the victim’s mind, in a metaphysical or hallucinatory domain. Observers see the victim collapse or become catatonic and choking, showing no outward signs of the injuries depicted in these visions. The Entity’s "superhuman strength" could be a manifestation of its hallucinatory power rather than an actual physical phenomenon.
  • Telepathy/Psychological Mastery: It is able to read all memories of a host to conjure the most traumatic and vulnerable moments.
    • Pre-visualization of the victim's actions: Through telepathy, the Smile Entity can anticipate the person's movements and predict the actions they would take in a given situation. This power is apparently related to the total control it takes over the host's mind. It did this with Rose when she tried to kill Carl to free herself from the curse, and with Skye. With this, the entity also constantly tests the victim and use it for despair even more the host. Like if the monster always knew all the person's movements a few time steps before and know or guess how they would act. As shown with hosts who escaped the Smile Entity by passing the curse onto someone else despite the Entity having this power, it may be limited.
  • Fear Inducement: The Entity is intimidating enough to make its victims look at it with immense fear, dread, and trauma. It also uses its intimidation to jump scare the victim without warning.
  • Possession: The Entity can fully possess a victim’s body once it has broken them mentally.
    • Multi-Possession: The events surrounding Skye’s suicide suggest that the Entity may have targeted thousands of potential witnesses at once, raising the possibility of a large-scale infection. However, it remains unclear how the curse would manifest if multiple people were exposed simultaneously. The films do not confirm whether the demon can infect every witness concurrently, move between them one at a time, or create multiple independent manifestations. As a result, the exact mechanics of how the Entity might operate on such a large scale remain unknown.
    • Temporary Possession: There are also hints that it can briefly control victims beforehand, as suggested by Rose’s cat being killed, Skye’s dressing room being trashed, and Lewis sending Skye a text to come over, with neither host recalling if they were involved in these events afterward. It’s possible it temporarily "possessed" (or at the very least, influenced) Lewis when he "invited" Skye over to his apartment. While he acknowledges Skye, after he runs out of his room in fear right before his death, he is confused why Skye is there with him despite already acknowledging her earlier. While it’s not generally not clear, it’s possible the Entity "influenced" Lewis while he was talking to Skye in some sort of way. He also seems confused and afraid when he picked up the sword and threatened Skye with it, which may mean he’s not realizing his actions in general or if it’s something from the Entity.
  • Trauma Empowerment/Absorption: According to the imprisoned survivor of its curse, it has the ability to feed on trauma to survive and for power.
  • Cunning Intellect: The demon has been confirmed to be unnaturally clever. It was shown that it tricked Rose into thinking she ended its curse by making her hallucinate. It did the same with Skye, making her think she had killed the Entity, only for it to reveal it was all a hallucination.
  • Omnimalevolence: The Smile Entity is shown to be a true embodiment of evil, having no form of redemption, showing that the demon is an extremely irredeemable entity.
  • Perception Dominance: The demon seemed capable of controlling all of a victim's senses, beyond just visions; when rehearsing, Skye saw her leg break like it did in the car crash, which also gave her the same pain as the real injury, until the illusion was dropped. The demon can also force the host into fugue states, such as Rose blacking out to wake up in the middle of a street.
    • Mindscape Manipulation/False Reality Imprisonment: The demon can manipulate the host’s perception to the point of imprisoning the host in a false reality. In Smile after Rose "killed" the Smile Entity, it tricked her into thinking she drove to see Joel, but she was still in her mother's house. For Smile 2, it's highly implied that after Skye was attacked by her dancers and blacked out, everything afterwards (waking up in the hospital, driving with "Gemma", confronting the Smile Entity in the freezer) until the day of the tour when she committed suicide was all in her head.
      • Dream Manipulation: As shown with Laura, Rose, and possibly Skye, it can manipulate the host's dream, such as making it extremely vivid and realistic that the user is unaware they're dreaming.
  • Catatonia Inducement: The Smile Entity's true form is horrifying enough to send victims into a trance-like state, most likely by scaring them to the point of catatonia. It's unknown if the victim has to be mentally broken first or if the Smile Entity can do this whenever it pleases. When it confronted Skye in the freezer, it showed its actual eyes and mouth, which caused Skye to (seemingly) freeze in place temporarily.
  • Soul Collection: Although each person who encounters the entity before committing suicide, how they view the entity in their final moments varies from person to person. There is a theory that justifies that the demon doesn't eliminate the souls of it's victims at all, but rather imprisons or seals them. This is evident in the number of smiles the entity has.

Potential Weaknesses[]

  • Witness Needed: While its powers of illusion and deception allow it to manipulate events to always end up in front of another victim, it is implied that should a host die without a witness, the Smile Entity itself would also cease to be, although this was conjecture.
  • Victim Bypassing: If an infected host gruesomely murders someone in front of a witness, that witness becomes the new host. It is unclear whether the demon allows this transfer by choice or if it occurs automatically. In one instance, a host tried to carry out such a killing, only to discover it was a hallucination, leading to even greater mental anguish. Whether the Entity was actively preventing the transfer or simply using the opportunity to induce more mental anguish remains unclear.
  • Mentally strong victim: Apparently the entity cannot use all it's powers the more mentally strong and less traumatized the affected person is.
  • Shapeshifter without feeding: It seems that the demon needs a certain amount of energy to torment his victims, which, for example, it uses to be a shapeshifter, because it depends on the trauma it feeds on. Therefore, by not having enough trauma, it wouldn't be able to generate so many hallucinations or survive for much time in a host with those characteristics.
  • Happiness: The demon has never been seen reacting to a happy moment, laugh or a genuine smile from the victim, as none of it's victims have really focused on remembering good moments in their lives , since they have only focused on finishing off the curse. This method could possibly be a future-simple way to fight it.
  • Therapy: Being a demonic entity in the form of a mental illness and curse, it is assumed that by having real and effective therapy, the victim's condition should improve, but it would not necessarily kill the mental parasite.

Biography[]

Laura Hasn't Slept[]

Taking place shortly before Smile, this is seemingly the least strong version of The Monstrosity. In Laura Hasn't Slept, the short takes place in the dream/mind of Laura Weaver. The Monstrosity temporarily pretends to be a therapist named Dr. Parsons with Laura in the dream not realizing that she's never met a person named Dr. Parsons, let alone have him as her therapist. Laura, speaking to who she believes is her therapist, tells of a reoccurring dream with The Monstrosity in how she'll be in a random location like her apartment or on the train and gets a horrible gut feeling and a random man, always the same man, will appear and smile a horrible smile with horrible eyes and tells how this same dream is ruining her sleep schedule and day to day life.

Laura with her "therapist" standing behind her.

Dr. Parsons/Monstrosity drops the façade and turns the therapy room into a more decayed version of itself. Laura is unable to leave the office as Dr. Parsons stands up behind her, calling her attention as he states he has something to show her. The Monstrosity tears off his face, though Laura looks away last second. The Monstrosity tells Laura to look at him, before loudly yelling it. Laura covers her face before walking across the room and out a window to see her brain activity from inside her dream before hearing footsteps and turning around. The Monstrosity, showing its true form which is best described as a fleshy rotting skull with white eyes, assumingly the same man described by Laura in her previous dreams jumps in front of her. Her reaction to this is fear as she also pulls at her face, causing her eyes to bleed as she screams.

Smile[]

In this film, The Monstrosity and even Laura herself is expanded upon. The Monstrosity has no true name, nor are its origins clearly explained. All that is known is that it passes from host to host like a virus, seemingly growing stronger with every life it takes. The demon spreads its influence by pushing its victims to suicide in any number of horrific manners, preferring to possess them itself after breaking them mentally and then killing them in an equally gruesome fashion, preferably in front of a witness, who will then become the demon's new host. How long it’s done this, or to how many individuals, remains unknown.

The Monstrosity in Laura's body.

Dr. Rose Cotter, a psychiatrist, was granted the case of Laura Weaver, the previous main character of Laura Hasn't Slept, a Ph.D. student who claimed that she was being haunted by a demonic entity. Laura witnessed her professor, Dr. Muñoz, commit suicide in front of her by bludgeoning himself to death with a ball peen hammer, traumatizing her and, unknowingly, passing the demon to her. Laura explains how The Monstrosity has gotten more control/presence over her mind, in that The Monstrosity now takes the form of several different people including people she knows instead of appearing as the same man. After ranting about being followed by a demonic entity that can wear the faces of other people, and pleading to Rose that she's not crazy, she suffers a severe panic attack and insists that the entity is in the room with them, unseen by Rose. The entity possesses Laura's body by crawling into her mouth. As Rose calls the security staff, she notices a smiling Laura slice her face and then her own throat with a shard of broken pottery. Laura falls to the ground and dies while her corpse is still smiling, as Rose watches on in horror.

Rose first seeing the Smile Entity in her mind

The Smile Entity‘s as first appearance in Rose's mind.

From there, Rose suffers several supernatural occurrences where she sees Laura and many others smiling at her, as the Entity can take on the appearance of anyone she knows, including her deceased mother and older sister. The Entity somehow killed Rose's cat Mustache and unknowingly put it into a gift box meant for her nephew Jackson as a birthday gift. The demon also impersonates the voice of a First Line Security woman on the phone when its presence triggers Rose's house alarm.

Horrified, Rose has a panic attack when the boy opens the box before being attacked by the Smile Entity and crashing through a glass table. She continues to investigate to learn what happened before the deaths of Laura, and her professor, Dr. Muñoz. She visits the professor's wife to find that he had also witnessed a suicide and made made various drawings and artworks of the Entity that terrorized him. She then expands her search, discovering that multiple people had died before Dr. Muñoz.

As Joel, a police detective, explains, there have been over 19 documented suicide cases within the United States alone where the victim has committed suicide in front of someone else. All of the victims claimed to have been tormented by a demonic entity before their deaths, and all were found wearing a sinister smile before killing themselves. The only instances where the curse seemingly "skipped over" a victim is when a man named Robert Talley murdered a stranger before a witness. While this allowed him to survive, it consequently earned him a life sentence in prison while the curse passed from him to the witness and continued from there.

Robert learned of the tactic from the only other known person to survive the Smile Entity's curse; a Brazilian man who murdered his neighbor in front of the latter's wife, and this caused the demon to pass over to her. Rose and Joel then go to the state prison to locate and meet with Robert Talley, who reveals to Rose (believing her simply a concerned friend of a cursed victim and not the victim herself) that she must gruesomely kill another person in front of a witness, as he did in the past, in order to save herself from the curse. When Rose accidentally yelled out in anger and opposition that she can't kill anyone, Robert was horrified to realize that Rose had the curse. Not wanting to take it back and go through it again, he began having a severe panic attack, where he screams at Rose to get away from him before he is restrained by the prison guards.

The Smile Entity later takes on the appearance of Rose's psychiatrist, Dr. Madeline Northcott. It enters Rose's home and conducts a brief therapy session before revealing itself to her, laughing and telling her that it’s almost time for her. It then attacks Rose by slamming the back of her head into a wall and growling into her face, laughing and drooling as she screams in terror.

"Almost time, Rose."

Rose then returns to the hospital to find someone to kill. She then attempts to kill one of the patients while her boss watches, seemingly succeeding. The Entity then reveals itself to be disguised as her boss, tearing off its face and howling madly. Rose then wakes up in her car, having never entered the hospital at all, with her previous actions revealed to be little more than a dream concocted by the Entity to further break her spirit and mind.

Eventually, Rose learns that the Entity is drawn to trauma, feeding off of its victims' past mental anguishes, so she decides to confront her trauma head-on by returning to her old childhood home. Rose fights with what appears to be her mother wearing only a tank top and underwear, confronting her past by revealing that she was frightened of her mother and that, though she loves her, she couldn’t bring herself to help her when she died. The entity smiles, revealing itself, before contorting into a grotesque version of her mother. Rose demands the demon on why it won’t leave her alone, to which it responds: “Because your mind is so…inviting.”

Rose flees the demon, but it follows and attacks her. It holds her to the floor and chokes her, growling: “You can’t escape your own mind, Rose.”, only for Rose to retaliate that it that it can’t escape either, before fighting back. After seemingly setting the Entity ablaze, Rose runs from the collapsing house and reunites with Joel asking if she could spend the night with him. Smiling, the entity (disguised as Joel) says that it will stay with her forever.

Shocked, she runs out of Joel's apartment only to realize that she never left her old home and that Joel is already there, hoping to help her. It turns out, the Smile Entity had outsmarted Rose and she had fallen right into its trap. She attempts to barricade herself inside the house with the creature to prevent the curse from spreading, only to be confronted by the Smile Entity, who rips off its own face to reveal its true from: a tall, demonic, skinless humanoid entity with multiple contorted mouths nested one within the other, all twisted into a horrifying grin. Frightened to the point of catatonia, Rose collapses, whereupon the demon crawls into her mouth and takes over her body completely. Joel breaks through the door but is forced to watch as Rose covers herself in kerosene and self-immolates, smiling even as she burns.

Smile 2[]

Joel sees Rose burning again

The Smile Entity haunting Joel in the form of a burning Rose.

Six days later Joel tries to pass it onto Russian gangsters in their hideout using the method told to Rose by Robert Talley. Joel holds one of the gangsters, named Alexi, at gunpoint and gives him a gruesome death in front of another criminal, named Yev, though during a shootout after killing Alexi, he accidentally fatally shoots Yev. However, Lewis Fregoli, a drug dealer, silently witnessed the event, causing the curse to pass onto him instead. A remorseful Joel apologises to Lewis for what he will endure and tries to escape, but runs into the rest of the gangsters who had just arrived at the house, forcing him to flee. Joel manages to evade the gangsters even as he is being shot at, but as he goes onto the road he is instantly ran over by a speeding truck, ripping his torso from his lower body and leaving a smile shaped blood smear on the road.

Feeling pain from injuries from a car accident (unrelated to the one that killed Joel) that killed her boyfriend Paul Hudson a year prior, famous pop star Skye Riley looks for pain-killers, but due to her history of drug addiction, can't obtain anything strong enough to ease her pain. Skye messages her former drug dealer, who invites her to his apartment. When Skye arrives, her dealer is revealed to be Lewis, who holds her by the throat with a katanae due to believing her to be another manifestation made by the Entity. Skye is able to convince him she is real and mentions the text which Lewis has no recollection of sending, After doing a bump of cocaine and explaining what he has been experiencing the last week, Lewis goes into a side room to retrieve Vicodin for Skye. When he takes too long, she approaches the doorway in concern, only for Lewis to run back into the room, screaming in terror at the Entity, which Skye cannot see. Lewis is then possessed by the entity and falls to the floor choking. Skye approaches him, assuming he's having an overdose, only for Lewis to start smiling at her and get back up with a barbell plate in his hands. Lewis proceeds to violently smash the plate onto his face several times, killing him and passing the curse onto Skye. Skye tries to dial 911, but remembering that the room is full of illegal narcotics, and that the police could suspect her of murdering Lewis, both of which could ruin her life and career, decides to leave the apartment instead.

The next day during a fan signing, Skye is approached by an unkempt obsessive fan named Alfredo who is taken away by security after he makes inappropriate comments to Skye. Afterwards the Entity takes the form of a young girl and approaches Skye, but does not respond to her as they take a photo together, confusing Skye. Skye then receives a message from someone asking if she had been to Lewis's apartment. Later, a stressed Skye calls her old friend Gemma, whom she had fallen out with prior to the car crash, and asks her to spend the night with her, to which Gemma accepts. Later as Skye plays the piano the Entity draws her to a corridor where it appears as a naked Alfredo and runs at Skye, making her run into Gemma as she tries to escape. A confused Skye sees no Alfredo and brushes off what had occurred. As Skye goes to bed with Gemma, she has a flashback to the crash and her crying after seeing Paul's corpse. After waking up and telling Gemma how miserable she feels, Gemma mocks her and calls her a "horrible person", an upset Skye looks towards a smiling Gemma who's face suddenly shines with headlights as she makes the noise of a crashing car. Skye wakes up again, and realises she is late for a recital.

During the recital, the Entity suddenly appears in front of Skye as Paul, causing her to fall back and snap her leg, a panicked Skye calls for help but then sees that she is unscathed. Skye angrily accuses one of her dancers of throwing off her balance, but is informed that they were nowhere near her. Skye sees her assistant, Joshua, passing by her, smiling, as she heads to her dressing room. Skye finds it trashed and quickly blames Joshua, but is told by her mother, Elizabeth, that he was with her all day. Skye is told that she must go to a charity event but her pleas that she is unwell are ignored.

During the event, the teleprompter Skye is reading from freezes, which prompts her to improvise a speech which spirals into her venting about her personal issues and struggles. Skye realises that the teleprompter never broke and continues her speech from the script provided until it announces that Paul would take the stage, shocking Skye. The Entity slowly approaches Skye in Paul's form, smiling at her, causing her to yell at it despite the attendees seeing nothing. The Entity suddenly disappears but then grabs her from behind at the same time as the MC, whom Skye reactively knocks away, leading the MC to fall off the stage onto a table. Due to her recent emotional breakdowns, everyone in Skye's inner circle, and the attendees, believe Skye to have relapsed, thus, when she finally tries to explain the curse, nobody believes her.

Back at apartment, Skye continues getting messages from the unknown number. They say they know it’s Skye and that they know what she has been seeing and experiencing. They also send Skye a video that Lewis made on his phone where he described seeing the Entity, as she watches she is suddenly interrupted and yelled at by a vision of Lewis. The person invites Skye to meet them at a public location. Skye goes incognito to a bar where she meets Morris, the man who was contacting her. He explains that his brother was a past victim of the Entity and ever since, he's been trying to stop it ever since. Morris has seen the pattern of events unfold between other victims and was the one who found Lewis’s body and subsequently got Skye’s number off his phone. Morris suggests that, since he is a nurse, he can stop Skye’s heart to kill her and then revive her before the Entity can finish her itself. Skye rejects this idea and storms off as fans start to recognize and surround her.

SkyeRileygettingjumped

Skye, being attacked by several smiling people.

In her apartment, Skye is accosted by versions of her backup dancers, all with the same eerie smile. She tries to flee, but several more appear in the next room, eventually surrounding her. Skye once again tries to escape but is picked up by the dancers who throw her around and slam her head into a piano before holding her down, ripping a chunk of her hair out as a large bloody arm comes down and forces itself down her throat. Skye blacks out and has another flashback to her car accident, now moments before. It is revealed that she and Paul began arguing while high on drugs and an irrational Skye grabbed the steering wheel while in the passenger seat, leading to the crash.

Smile Entity as Elizabeth-1

"I've tasted what's inside your head!"

Skye awakens in an exclusive rehab clinic, with her mother by her bedside, chastising her for her recent actions. Skye asks if they could cancel the tour while she is unwell. Elizabeth argues that if she cancels the tour, it would be the end of her career and the record label would sue them for millions. Skye then angrily criticizes her mother, and claims that she doesn’t care about her and only about her career, while Elizabeth counters with all of the sacrifices she has had to make for Skye, however Elizabeth reveals herself to be another manifestation and mocks Skye, proceeding to break a mirror and stab itself repeatedly with a broken Shard. Skye frantically tries to get away but suddenly sees herself covered in blood and holding the mirror shard instead, finally seeing Elizabeth's mutilated body. Skye moves to escape the clinic and steals a guards gun, holding up the clinic before leaving. On the streets, Skye runs into Gemma and forces her driver at gunpoint to give up the car so she can go find Morris, Gemma accompanying her. But on the way there, Skye receives a call from the real Gemma who claims to have never even been contacted by Skye. Meaning the entity had been posing as Gemma the whole time. She disappears and Skye finds herself having to drive to Morris's location herself.

Skye meets Morris at an abandoned Pizza Hut and he guides her to its freezer to stop her heart easier which will briefly kill her, sever her connection the entity, and kill it before he can resuscitate her. He leaves her in the freezer to wait, only for the Entity to appear to Skye on the ceiling in the form of herself during the night of the crash, mocking her cries before falling on her. The Entity taunts Skye for trying to stop it and tries to possess her. Skye manages to bite off the Entity's thumbs before she insults it and then starts injecting herself with the drug that would stop her heart.

Breakalegoutthere

"Break a leg out there."

Unfortunately Skye finds herself still alive and the Entity still present. The Entity tells her that it has always been in control and corners her to the freezer door before shutting two other doors together, revealing the past few events had been a hallucination and that the Entity has controlled her to go to the show without even realizing it. It then tells her to break a leg before locking her in a metal pod from her show.

The pod then opens and Skye steps out onto the stage, about to perform in front of thousands of people and an unscathed Elizabeth. The Entity then appears in front of Skye one last time, this time in the form of her current self in her performance outfit. The entity then rips open its own body along the scar from the crash that Skye was ashamed of, and shows her its true form, putting her in a trance. It then breaks open Skye's mouth and takes full possession of her. Skye is only seen convulsing and choking from the audience's perspective before getting back up, smiling. "Skye" then fatally stabs herself in the eye with her microphone in front of the entire audience, leaving everyone horrified as they all scream in horror. The movie ends with a Skye’s lifeless body on the ground still smiling.

The entire crowd of Skye's concert. Assumingly, all of the people at the concert will eventually die to the entity.

Despite them all having witnessed Skye's death, it is unclear whether this resulted in the curse passing onto all of them or only one of them, since it is unknown if the entity can possess multiple people at once.

A small segment of "Death of Me" by Skye Riley before turning into The Smile Entity's own version.

Victims[]

  • 18 (possibly more) unknown victims
  • Morris' brother - tearing his jaw off with a crowbar
  • Man at gas station - chest impaled with garden sheers
  • Angela Powell - eyes gouged out
  • Dr. Gabriel Muñoz - skull bludgeoned repeatedly with a hammer
  • Laura Weaver - throat sliced with a vase shard
  • Mustache (Rose's cat) - killed off-screen by messing with Rose's mind to trick her into killing her cat
  • Dr. Rose Cotter - doused with kerosene and set on fire (passing on the curse to Joel, who then transferred it to Lewis)
  • Lewis Fregoli - face smashed with a dumbbell plate
  • Skye Riley - Microphone impaled through right eye multiple times
  • Fifty thousand (possibly more) of Skye's fans (including to those who saw her on TV live) (to be claimed)
  • 8 of Skye's backup dancers (to be claimed)
  • Several security guards at the tour (to be claimed)
Total - 27 (possibly more)

Survivors[]

Only 3 known hosts of the Smile Demon have survived it, using the only known method possible: killing someone else in front of a live witness to infect them with the curse and continue the cycle.

  • Unnamed Brazilian man - killed his neighbor in front of neighbor's wife
  • Robert Talley - killed someone in front of a witness
  • Joel - fatally stabbed a gangster and then shot his brother dead, which cursed Lewis Fregoli when he came to visit them for a drug deal. Joel's survival and success over the Smile Demon was short-lived, however, as he was soon after hit and bisected by a truck he didn't see while escaping from more gangsters but it is not certain whether or not the Entity had a hand in Joel's death, as his blood trail resembles a smile.

Trivia[]

  • The only time The Smile Entity is officially named, is in the credits known as the Monstrosity. Crew members called it Lollipop.
  • There's evidence to support the theory that the Smile Entity is a collector of souls, consuming its victims and adding their souls to its own. In the drawings made by Dr. Muñoz, faces are shown embedded all over its body, heavily implying that it brings its victims' souls into itself after killing them, perhaps as a form of sustenance. Another clue is when The Smile Entity tells Rose that it will stay with her forever, implying that not only did it kill her, but also consumed her.
    • When Laura was looking out the window and saw flashing blue orbs of energy, it was an indication that they could be harvested souls the demon contained within itself.
    • It's also even more supported in Smile 2, when the Entity reveals its full body on stage before possessing Skye, it got slightly bigger than in the first film, implying the Entity feeds itself on its previous victims to grow stronger.
    • In both the credits of Smile and Smile 2, Rose and Skye's voice are heard repeatedly over their horror in asking the Smile Entity what it is, as if they are in a loop of tormented trauma inside its domain.
  • Unlike typical demons which possess a vessel and attempt to stay with it indefinitely, this demon acts as a type of living virus transferring from one host to the next. It can be assumed that it does this to sustain itself, consuming the souls of its victims for strength and power before moving on to the next target.
  • It is highly likely that the reason it got a lot bigger in Smile 2 was mainly because of Rose's strong will that could fight back against it for a while, with the rest of the other victims not being as strong and courageous as her, as it took over twenty people to reach to its size in the first Smile, but only took two people, including Rose and Lewis to be more than twice that size, which is why Skye stood no chance in using her mind against the entity.
  • The first time the Smile Entity appears as Rose's mother is not in the house her mother died in, but in the distance outside of the hospital, with the director confirming this.
  • Based on the events of the first and second films, the entity appears to make everything the main protagonist sees and experiences during the film a giant hallucination, while in reality, the protagonist is going about their daily lives. It likely does this to not raise any suspicions from other potential victims and risk them rising up against it.
  • One of the methods of driving a victim insane/terrorizing them that seems to be a favorite of The Entity's is either tearing off its face or having fake people of its creation tear of its face as it does this same tactic in front of Laura and Rose.
  • During a behind the scenes video for Smile 2, Parker revealed something interesting about its "true form", saying that the entity's appearance would vary from person to person, and has no real definitive appearance.
    • This disproves many theories to why the entity was larger in the second film.
    • It also explains the many inconsistencies between the entity in both films.
