The Smileys are supporting antagonists in the 2018 horror film The First Purge, the fourth installment in The Purge franchise.

Led by General Smiley, the Smileys are government mercenaries contracted by Chief of Staff Arlo Sabian to elevate the death count of the Staten Island Experiment as part of a scheme by the New Founding Fathers to proclaim its "success" to the public, thus legitimizing the act of future nationwide Purge Nights. Alongside other international mercenary groups and white supremacist organizations, the Smileys effectively serve as NFFA-funded death squads dispatched to low-income neighborhoods in Staten Island primarily populated by minority communities.

History[]

During the events of The First Purge, Chief of Staff Arlo Sabian was disappointed with the overall turnout and low casualty count of the Staten Island Experiment. Instead of the high murder rates and violent acts he expected, the populace of Staten Island were merely engaging in minor activities such as block parties and occasional looting. Due to his interest in legitimizing the Purge into reality as well as allegiance to the New Founding Fathers, Sabian covertly contracted several mercenary groups such as the Smileys and deployed them into the Island to elevate the number of casualties for the Experiment.

The Smileys make their prominent appearance in the movie as they enter the Park Hill Towers apartment as part of their orders, where they initiate in acts of mass murder by slaughtering the residents one floor at a time. Though their operation initially proceeds without failure despite several attempts of resistance by some of the residents, the Smileys' murderous aims are stymied and disrupted by Dmitri Cimber, a gangster and crime lord who becomes involved in the broader conflict in order to protect his ex-girlfriend Nya and her loved ones (who were also residing on the 14th floor of the building). A trio of mercenaries encounter Dmitri, which leads to a fatal confrontation resulting in their deaths; Dmitri manages to shoot the first mercenary in the doorway as the latter entered the stairwell area. He then tackles another mercenary down the stairs, moments before shooting another one to death with a rifle. The final mercenary ends up meeting his demise as Dmitri runs up to and strangles him to death.

As the Smileys alongside their General continue to slaughter their way up the apartment complex floor by floor, Dmitri cuts the power off to the building before wiping out six more mercenaries with his machete blade and rifle. However, General Smiley manages to survive the encounter with Dmitri, who proceeds to call for backup while taking off his mask. Meanwhile, another duo of Smiley mercenaries enter Nya's apartment to wipe out any occupants, only for them to be ambushed and stabbed to death by Nya, Isaiah, and Dolores. A third mercenary enters the apartment to investigate the chaos and is about to murder Isaiah and Nya, only to be shot in the head by Dmitri.

Trivia[]

  • A defining visual characteristic of the Smileys are their disturbing masks, which are akin to Gollywog dolls and other offensive depictions of Black Americans throughout history. General Smiley himself wears an overcoat eerily resembling the same variety that Schutzstaffel (SS) officials would wear during World War II.
