~ The Sniper explaining his actions to Sunny. |
The unnamed sniper is a minor antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands, serving as the main antagonist of the episode "Leopard Snares Rabbit".
He was a Clipper serving Baron Chau in the war between her and the Widow. He is the last surviving member of his Clipper unit who were sent to guard the controlled pass between the Fox and Butterfly Territories, and is therefore left responsible for killing any of the Widow's Clippers that try to make their way through the pass.
He was portrayed by Dwane Walcott.
Personality[]
The Sniper was cold and ruthless in his guarding of the controlled pass, shooting several enemy Clippers with no hesitation. Even when Sunny attempted to bargain with him, saying he just wanted to get a sick child through the pass, the Sniper refused to back down. After being defeated by Sunny, the Sniper revealed that his cold demeanor was not due to sadism, but rather because he was the last member of his unit, and he was only trying to do his duty as one of Baron Chau's Clippers. Even after the Sniper's death, Sunny expressed that he was just another young adult pulled into the war between Chau and the Widow to die on the front lines.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about the Sniper's life prior to becoming a Clipper, but he is stated to have been a young adult who was recruited by Baron Chau to fight on the front lines. He and his unit of Clippers were sent to hold the controlled pass, filling the building with deadly traps and shooting down anyone who tried to get through on foot. Eventually, all other members of the Sniper's unit are killed, with him being left to hold the pass on his own. The Sniper is able to do this for several days, until the arrival of Sunny and Bajie, who claim that Sunny is the Widow's new Regent. In reality, Sunny is trying to get his sick infant child Henry through the pass, and is lying about his status as Regent in order to take a team of Clippers through the pass. Sunny, Bajie, Arthur, and Wren attempt to make it through the pass, but the Sniper pushes them back and shoots Wren several times in the leg, causing the group to retreat. Sunny later tries again, having a group of Clippers hold up large mirrors in order to reflect light in the Sniper's eye in order to blind him. This works, and allows Sunny to make it through the pass and into the building where the Sniper is hiding. Sunny attempts to talk him down, but the Sniper refuses to yield and the two fight. Sunny eventually overpowers him and takes him prisoner. The Sniper explains what happened to his unit, saying he was only doing his duty. Sunny understands this, and orders the other Clippers to not let any harm come to the Sniper. Despite this, Arthur slits the Sniper's throat out of revenge for the death of his fellow Clippers. Sunny is enraged by this, but chooses not to kill Arthur as he recognizes that Arthur is another young adult sent to die on the front lines just like the Sniper was.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Archery: The Sniper had an expert level of precision and accuracy when using a crossbow, capable of taking out entire groups of Clippers at once. He was able to single-handedly hold the controlled pass, to the point that the Widow's Clippers assumed their were multiple archers present rather than just one.
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: The Sniper was shown to be highly capable in combat, able to hold his own against Sunny, the most dangerous Clipper in the Badlands.
Trivia[]
- The Sniper is the only Clipper from the Fox Territory who is shown to be proficient in both close range combat and archery.
