The Spiteful Brakevan is the main antagonist of the story "Break Van" from The Twin Engines, the fifteenth book of The Railway Series by the Rev. W. Awdry and the Thomas & Friends episode adaptation of the same name.
Biography[]
Upon the arrival of the Scottish twin locomotives Donald and Douglas, this brake van took a dislike to the latter. He repeatedly caused Douglas to be late, getting him unfairly blamed for it. Donald bumped him violently, and he behaved better until Donald had an accident. With Donald out of the way, he stopped taking threats seriously, and started causing trouble for James, who had to take over Donald's goods work while Donald had to get his Tender repaired. One day, the Brakevan and the Trucks/Freight Cars caused trouble for James by holding back. James asked for Douglas to help him up Gordon's hill, which resulted in the Van getting accidentally crushed between the trucks and Douglas. The Van was never rebuilt and his remains were scrapped.
Personality[]
As his name implies, he was a very spiteful and troublesome brake van, who took an instant dislike to Douglas. He was even more troublesome than the troublesome trucks, which was probably the reason that he got scrapped (unlike the Troublesome Trucks or even S.C. Ruffey). Unlike other Thomas & Friends villains such as 'Arry and Bert, the Troublesome Trucks, Diesel, or even Diesel 10, he lacks any redeeming qualities and is taken completely seriously, however it seemed as if he almost redeemed himself, until Donald’s accident, considering that he behaved much better up until then.
Trivia[]
- The Spiteful Brakevan is the only villain in the Thomas and Friends series to die.
