Biography[]
The VIPs were all originally clients of Oh Il-nam and his financial firm. At some point, they, bored of their life of wealth and luxury, gathered together and established the Squid Games as a way of entertaining themselves. The VIPs used their capital to help fund the games so that Il-nam and his Masked Men would have everything they needed to properly organize it. The majority of the VIPs appear to be American, though the Deer-Masked VIP speaks with a Chinese accent, while the Eagle-Masked VIP speaks with a French accent.
Midway through the 33rd Squid Game, six VIPs arrived on the island to watch the Squid Game in person. They were greeted by Front Man, as Il-nam was unable to attend himself on account of secretly participating in the game as one of the players. The VIPs all observed the fifth round of the game, in which the 16 remaining players had to cross a bridge littered with tempered glass tiles and regular glass tiles that would shatter if stepped on.
Hwang Jun-ho manages to intercept the showing of the glass bridge disguised as a waiter whom he had knocked out earlier where he is forced to sit next to the VIP wearing a Panther Mask where he begins to flirt with Jun-ho. The VIP orders Jun-ho to take off his mask, but in order to not be discovered, instead offers to "go somewhere private" with him. Once they're both alone, the VIP attempts to rape Jun-ho, but has a gun pointed at his head and is forced to reveal everything he knows while Jun-ho records him. Jun-ho then knocks him out before escaping and the VIP is eventually discovered by a masked guard.
They would later observe the final round of the game, in which Gi-hun and Sang-woo had to compete in a game of "Squid Game" to see who would be the winner. When Gi-hun beat Sang-woo, but stopped short of winning and attempted to end the game, the VIPs all reacted in disbelief. However, after Sang-woo killed himself to allow Gi-hun to win, the VIPs all left the island to return home, satisfied with another successful game.
A few years later in 2024, a different group of five VIPs watched the 37th Squid Game. They first appear in the Hide and Seek game, where four of them got to play as a triangle guards after the timer ends. They encounter a Seeker, Player 296, who attempts to kill VIP Richard before getting shot by VIP Jennifer. The latter two then head upstairs to kill more eliminated contestants alongside VIP Jack and VIP Kevin.
The five VIPs then watch Jump Rope and Sky Squid Game, where they eventually brought up the idea of making Jun-hee's baby Player 222 after the former died, which the Front Man agreed to.
When the island is evacuated and soon blown up, the VIPs can be seen flying away in helicopters in the background. It’s unknown what happened to them after the game.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Wealth and Resources: As tycoons and benefactors of the Squid Game, the VIPs are impressively wealthy, which allows them to have a lot of resources. They sustained the editions of the Squid Game for decades and have at their service the staff of the games, including authorities such as the Front Man. The VIPs use their money to live in luxury, with resources like the helicopter seen during their arrival at the Squid Game island and the servants seen while they were watching the fifth game.
Trivia[]
- VIP #4, the overweight man wearing the panther mask who tried to have sex with Jun-ho, did not appear for the final game with all the other VIPs. VIP #4 is also the only VIP from Season 1 to have his face revealed. Four of the five VIPs in Season 3 also have their faces revealed when they were disguised as soldiers.
- Unlike the unnamed VIPs from Season 1, the VIPs from Season 3 are all credited with names.
- Owl Mask is the only VIP to be Korean, as most of the other VIPs, except Jennifer and VIP 3 (season 1), are Westerners. He's also the only one who was never seen speaking in English and the only one to die.
- Jennifer is the only known female VIP.
- She is also the youngest VIP.
- Season 1's Deer Mask VIP and Jennifer are the only VIPs other than Il-nam heard speaking different languages than English, not counting VIP Richard exclaiming the Italian words "Mamma mia!" Deer Mask recited a saying in Chinese and VIP Jennifer spoke a sentence in Mandarin.
- Without counting the Host, Oh Il-nam, among the VIPs, Player 296 from the 37th Squid Game is the only player of the whole series who was ever seen making direct contact with the VIPs, having nearly killed VIP Richard but getting thwarted and shot by VIP Jennifer.
- Player 296 is also the only Squid Game player and overall character ever seen getting personally killed by the VIPs onscreen.
- VIP John is the only VIP in the 37th Squid Game who was never seen with his mask off, and also the only one to win a bet.
- Ironically, this is the polar opposite of the Panther Mask VIP from 33rd Squid Game, who is the only VIP to have his mask taken off.
- For unknown reason, the VIPs only make their appearances from Game 4 onward in all known competition.
