The Vandiemenlander, also known as Bathcat, is a minor antagonist in Cormac McCarthy's 1985 horror/thriller crime and anti-Western epic novel Blood Meridian. Despite his real name never being revealed, he is still a major accomplice to the evil organization causing the conflict in the novel, The Glanton Gang.
Biography[]
Not much is known about the Vandiemenlander before he joined Glanton's Gang, although he does seem to express an interest in the profit associated with Glanton's mission.
After he joined the gang, during one of the gang's rests in a village, he acted as a conduit to demonstrate Judge Holden's evil nature while also showing off how evil they are themselves. In this scene, Judge Holden purchases two puppies from a small vendor and then carries them out, dropping them both into a river to watch them drown. From the side, the Vandiemenlander sees this action, pulls out his gun, and shoots both puppies before they drown. The brief splash of red in the water after he does this implies that he did indeed hit and kill both puppies.
Later in the novel, he is seen hanging along with the last two Delaware mercenaries and Gilchrist, all of their bodies heavily mutilated.
