“ | I was property too once. A house Cog for the Widow's husband. And every night... after she went to sleep... he would knock on my door. He could have had any Doll in Wall Street. But he didn't want them. You can't pay a Doll to love you, he said. Not like his little Tilda. | „ |
~ Tilda's story of the deceased Baron. |
The Widow's unnamed husband is a minor antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is the former ruler of the Butterfly Territory, making him the Baron of Oil. He eventually took a woman named Minerva as his wife, but was eventually assassinated by her after he began to repeatedly force himself on a Cog girl named Tilda, whom the Widow saw as her adoptive daughter. After his death, Minerva took his position as Baron and became known as "The Widow".
Personality[]
The Widow's husband is described as having been cold and heartless by everyone who knew him, which made him the perfect candidate for a Baron of the Badlands. His sadism was extreme enough for even his own Regent, Nathaniel Moon, to contemplate killing him on several occasions. He was described as working well with the other Barons, as Juliet Chau admired his brutal method of ruling his territory. The true extent of his sadism was seen in how he treated those living in his household, as it's implied that he physically abused Minerva and is explicitly stated to have forced himself on the Cog girl Tilda, and even forcing her to say that she loved him, even though he could have had any girl that he wanted as a Baron.
Biography[]
At some point in the history of the Badlands, the Butterfly Territory is taken over by the Widow's husband, who brutally enforces his rule onto the people living within. He eventually makes Nathaniel Moon his Regent, who goes on to become to the most dangerous and feared Clipper in all of the Badlands. Despite his prosperous Clipper career, Nathaniel despised his Baron for his sadism, and had a desire to kill him, but ultimately did not go through with it and retired. After this, a new Regent by the name of Teague took over. The Baron would eventually take a Cog woman named Minerva as his wife, but repeatedly abused her during their marriage, to the point that Minerva also harbored a desire to kill him. The breaking point came when a girl named Tilda began working as a house Cog for the Baron and Baroness. Despite being able to hire any Doll prostitute that he wanted, the Baron decided to sleep with the underage Tilda every night, claiming that he could not pay a Doll to love him, as he would force Tilda to say that she loved him every time he raped her. One night, she forget to say it, and he did something so horrible that it drove Tilda to suicide. However, before she could end her own life, Minerva decided she could not stand his abuse of Tilda anymore, as she saw Tilda as her adoptive daughter, and assassinated her husband by stabbing him in the heart. Minerva then begged Tilda to forgive her for not killing the Baron sooner, prompting Tilda to tell Minerva that she loved her and actually mean it for the first time. Minerva then became the new Baron and was given the name "The Widow" due to her having assassinated her husband rather than besting him in single combat.
