~ The witch after realizing that Natascha has been keeping her prisoner for so many years.

The witch is the overarching antagonist of the movie Nightbooks, and the true evil behind the scene. She is based on The Witch from the Grimm's Fairytale Hansel and Gretel.

Biography[]

Not much is known about the witch's past, other than she is hundreds, or even thousands of years old, and that she once encountered Hansel and Gretel. It is unknown what happened at their encounter, but it is presumed that they survived the encounter with her and pushed her into her oven, but she managed to break free. After that, she continued to lure children to her home (it's possible that she started out living in the candy house, and then upgraded to the apartment later on, but it is not yet confirmed) and make them work as her slaves. And if they ever didn't work to her level of satisfaction, which was almost all the time, she would devour them.

Centuries after the Hansel and Gretel event, she kidnapped a girl named Natascha. Natascha pretended to like the witch and wanting to be like her, thus becoming her favorite. However in secret, Natascha despised the witch just as much as the other kids and plotted her escape. She journaled in various books around the witch's library, so the witch wouldn't get to know her full plan, and later concocted a sleeping potion, using cinaroot to hide the stench from the suckleweed.

When the witch fell asleep, Natascha ran back home, only to find that her parents had moved away. So she returned to the apartment and kept the witch in a coma for many years, using a special machine to extract the magic the witch infinitely produced, making it into a special spray mist that gave her magic of her own. But when Natascha kidnapped a pair of preteens, Alex and Yasmin, they discovered the witch in her coffin. Natascha forced Alex to tell the story of why he wanted to burn his stories so that the witch would remain asleep. But he intentionally gave the story a happy ending, which wakes her up!

Infected by sugar and candy which seem to be stuck to her like bedsores, the witch angrily confronts Natascha, who finally stands up to her. The two of them engage in a battle, using their magic in attempt to destroy each other. The witch telekinetically makes a large column of candy topple onto Natascha, seemingly crushing her to death.

The witch then turns her attention to Alex and Yasmin, chasing them into the boiler room and managing to catch Yasmin. Alex attempts to reason with the witch to take him instead of Yasmin, but the she telekinetically chokes him, saying that she wants both of them. Natascha's invisible cat (who possibly belonged to the witch at one point) leaps onto the witch and claws at her face. The witch tosses the cat into a corner and traps her under a box. She then turns to Yasmin and is about to devour her when Alex distracts her with a scary story. After leaving it at a cliffhanger, he tosses the book into the furnace, causing the witch to shriek inhumanly. Desperate to find out the ending to the story, she reaches into the furnace in an attempt to retrieve the book. Alex and Yasmin then push her into the furnace and keep the door shut until she finally burns to death.

Later on, it is revealed that Natascha survived the witch's attack, though she is presumably injured. She crawls to the cabinet of the apartment, cackling as she reaches it.
