The Witch, also known as The Woman, is the main antagonist of the 2002 fantasy comedy film Hansel and Gretel. She is the film's version of the Candy Witch from the fairy tale.
She was portrayed by the late Lynn Redgrave.
Biography[]
The Witch is first seen during the opeing credits flying over the woods on her broom. When Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in the woods, The Witch senses them using her heightened sense of smell. When the Sandman and Wood Fairy leave to find the kids food, The Witch summons a wind storm by blowing magic dust towards doll verisons of Hansel and Gretel. Sensing the Wood Fairy is in trouble, they go to find her. In the morning, they smell something good and find the Witch's gingebread house. As they start to eat from the house, The Witch disguised as regular old woman comes out of the house. She brings them a basket of food and welcomes them in where they eat pastries and candies. She offers to take them to the middle of the woods to give them a big breakfast. She then provides them two beds to spend the night. In the morning, the interior of the gingerbread house turns dark and sinister. A talking raven warns the children of The Witch. The Witch locks Hansel in a cage and forces Gretel to cook food for him to fatten him up. Whenever, The Witch checks Hansel to see if he's fat, he always sticks out a chicken bone instead of his finger until he loses the bone and The Witch decides to cook him. Gretel smashes a mirror which destroys The Witch's disguise, exposing her terrifying true form. Gretel tricks The Witch into going into a cauldron. The Sandman and Wood Fairy sneak into the gingerbread house and pushes The Witch into her sinister-looking oven. The Witch survives and emerges from the oven burnt. Using the Wood Fairy's wands and throwing water at her (in a parody of The Wicked Witch of the West), The Sandman zaps The Witch back into the oven, killing her for good. When Hansel and Gretel are then reunited with their father, The Witch's ghost attempts to get them again but is blown away by the Wood fairy. The Witch vows the come back.
