~ Theebles after beating Enteri at quarter table. |
Theebles Royuset is the main antagonist of The Third Level, a short story tie-in to R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt. He was a clever, greedy, and gluttonous merchant who joined House Basadoni, a thieves' guild in the city of Calimport. After rising to the rank of lieutenant in the guild, he took on the young Artemis Entreri as his apprentice.
Appearance[]
Theebles had frizzy brown hair that, along with his clothes, was always greasy. He was an obese man, being four times wider than average.
Personality[]
Theebles was egotistical, sadistic, and clever. Despite being incredibly unathletic, he was able to work his way up the hierarchy of House Basadoni using his wits, ruthlessness, and money. He prided himself on being able to set up multiple layers of deception, but sometimes underestimated his opponents because of his arrogance.
Royuset's most famous trait was his gluttony. He ate whatever foods he could get his hands on and always asked for more. It was not uncommon for him to eat an entire cake before going to bed.
Biography[]
Initially, Theebles was a wealthy merchant. However, when he ended up on the wrong side of the law in the city of Calimport, he invested much of his money in joining House Basadoni to get protection. From there, he quickly moved up the ranks to one of Pasha Basadoni's lieutenants.
At some point, a young but ruthless street urchin named Artemis Enteri caught Theebles's attention. In order to test the boy's skill, he had one of his agents try to kill him. The agent failed, so Basadoni and Royuset took Artemis into their guild. The boy was apprenticed to Theebles.
Theebles grew to hate Entreri for the boy's rebellious spirit and treated him as poorly as he could get away with. One day, Entreri challenged him to Quarter Table, a game revolving around four glasses of wine, one with lethal poison in it, placed on a spinning table. The table would be spun, and when it stopped both players would drink from the glass in front of them, hoping not to drink the poisoned one. Theebles agreed to the challenge, but secretly drank an antivenom potion beforehand.
Entreri filled their glasses, put the poison in one, and spun the table. While he spun it, Theebles noticed that the boy had chipped the top of the poisoned glass, so that it was recognizable if you were paying attention. The chipped glass ended up in front of Theebles, who drank it knowing it was poisoned since he was certain that his antivenom would save him. With both players surviving, Theebles declared it a tie and left for bed, warning Entreri that he would be punished for trying and failing to kill his mentor.
Upon arriving in his room, Theebles took his cake out of his closet and discovered that Entreri had poisoned it. Drinking more antivenom, he ate the entire deadly cake and went to sleep. That night, he died painfully from the shards of glass that Entreri had put in the poisoned glass before their game.
Trivia[]
- Theebles bares the distinction of being the second person killed by Artemis Entreri. He is also the first to be killed for reasons other than self-defense.
