~ Thelma's final words after poisoning herself. |
Thelma Anne Davis, also known as Ayesha, is the secondary antagonist in "Arcadia", the second episode in the Series 3 of Endeavour. She is the mastermind behind the series of extortion in this episode, as well as the murderer of Simon Hallward, alongside Verity Richardson.
She was portrayed by Amelia Clarkson.
Biography[]
Thelma Anne Davis was originally a mentally unstable juvenile delinquent, who had been sent to an approved school for arson when she was 11. Later, she was taken into the House Beautiful led by Gideon Finn and became his disciple, calling herself as Ayesha. Later, she became a friend and model to artist Simon Hallward, who used to be one of their members.
However, after being pregnant after her affair with Finn, Thelma was sent to a hospital for abortion, and she met and befriended Verity Richardson there. After finding out what Verity's parents did to her, Thelma and Simon set up an extortion plan with Verity and threatened to put cathasis into food product of Leo Richardson's supermarket unless he paid ransom money.
When Leo Richardson refused to pay, Simon got impatient and poisoned the food with arsenic instead. After hearing news about the poisoned food killed a customer, Thelma and Verity realized that Simon got too far. Then, Thelma managed to blew up the room of Simon, killing him, through alarm clock, teapot and alcohol to create a time bomb.
During Morse's investigation on the case, Ayesha/Thelma could be seen at the House Beautiful, but Morse discovered that she seemed to dislike Gideon, even if the two were posed as a couple. After Morse's visit to Mrs. Richardson, Thelma and Verity faked their kidnapping and used Simon's recording (recorded before his death) to deceive Mr. & Mrs. Richardson.
To find out where Verity could be, Morse, Thursday, Jakes, Trewlove and Strange set out a plan to track down the kidnapper, but it ended up with Morse being tackled and the ransom money (served as a bait) being stolen. Still, the police still managed to track down the kidnapper. Not long afterwards, Morse and Jakes had discovered Verity inside a deserted mine and saved her before the bomb beside her detonated, almost killing Jakes in the process had he not escape in time.
Turned out, it was Thelma who had set the bomb, but only after she saw Morse escorting Verity out. In addition to that, Morse slowly discovered the murderer's method to kill Simon (or whoever it was in the room), but his recreation of the scene yielded to failure.
Nevertheless, it was uncovered later by Trewlove, who had watched the experiment all the time, that the teapot exploded because it was filled inside the closed bedroom of Simon, where the vapor had built up and subsquently filled the whole room. After the water boiled away, the metal shell of teapot would be burnt white hot and cause an reaction between it and the vapor (that would produce hydrogen which would be ignited by heat), exploding in the process.
According to Trewlove, Morse's recreation of the crime scene had failed, because he chose to do it in the yard, which was an outdoor open area, but she admitted Morse was right about the method. Later, Morse managed to dig out the fact that Verity plotted her own "kidnapping" alongside Thelma, who was also behind the murder of Simon for causing death through their original extortion project.
Meanwhile, growing more and more unstable, Thelma had kidnapped a baby and took him back to the House Beautiful, in order to add light to her dull life in this society. However, when Finn discovered this, he was furious and demaned Thelma to return the child back to his parents. Afterwards, Thelma was visited by Verity, who had escaped from the hospital, informing her that the police knew everything.
During the House Beautiful's lunch, Thelma called out Finn for his hypocrisy to create an utopia, as well as her boredom inside such a routine of life. Having enough of this, she decided to commit suicide along with Verity, but Verity was so afraid that she yielded back. Thelma eventually chose to poison herself, just in time the police arrive to arrest Verity and Thelma. Morse cradled Thelma in his arms, but he could do nothing but watching Thelma slipping away.
Later, Strange informed Morse, Thursday, Trewlove and Jakes about Thelma's death. Grieved, Verity revealed that she and Thelma planned to use the extorted money to build an orphanage in Africa, before she accept her arrest and was taken away by Trewlove.
