Thelma Nunes Viana is one of the main characters of the Brazilian Globo's soap opera Amor de Mãe/Mother's Love. She starts as one of the three protagonist mothers, along with Lurdes and Victoria, but later she progressively revealed herself as the main antagonist.
She is portrayed by Adriana Esteves, who also played Carminha, in Avenida Brasil, Laureta, in O Segundo Sol and young Nazaré Tedesco, in Senhora do Destino.

Many years ago, when one of the children of Lurdes was sold by they father for a human trafficker named Katia, Thelma had just lost her biological son and husband in a fire. Upset by the loss of her son, Thelma is introduced by the hospital nurse to Katia, who is her sister. Katia then offers her Domênico, the son of Lourdes that she just bought to bring to Rio de Janeiro, and Thelma adopts/buys him as a substitute for his son, who in turn is buried as the son of Lourdes, which in turn exchanges identity with the deceased.
Amor de Mãe[]
At present, Lurdes and Thelma meet for the first time when the latter is ill on the street and is rescued by the former, only to discover later that she has an aneurysm. Thelma and Lurdes soon become friends, both unaware that something much deeper connects them.
Domenico, who have his name changed to Danilo after being adopted by Thelma, is overprotected by the woman who raised him as a son and as an adult, feels uncomfortable with so much attachment by her, that she is even controlling, although she is always affectionate. Danilo has no idea that she is not his real mother.
Thelma owns a Portuguese restaurant, inherited from her family, and she cares for him with great attachment, wanting at all costs that Danilo, obeying his family's tradition, be the next owner of the business, getting furious when she sees him producing and selling drumsticks to other restaurants, being he, the owner of one, which by the way, faces a crisis and is in the sights of a businessman, Álvaro da Nobrega, who wants to buy a large area, in which is Thelma's restaurant. This makes her the enemy of Vitória, the lawyer of the businessman who arrives at his establishment to propose the sale of the property.
Domenico/Danilo eventually meets Lourdes's adoptive daughter, Camila, a school teacher. Thelma deeply wants him to give her a grandson and for that reason, she does her best to make Camila pregnant with him, even breaking the condom to make it happen. When Camila accidentally becomes pregnant, contrary to her desire to not have a child due to Thelma's sabotage, she ends up losing the baby, proving to be unable to have children, which makes Thelma disgusted. At least until she decided to become a surrogate mother and shelter her grandson in her belly. Even with all her health conditions weakened due to the aneurysm, she manages to conceive this child to satisfy at all costs her desire to be a grandmother. Gradually, Thelma reveals herself attached to this baby, feeling jealous of Camila.
Eventually, Thelma discovers that her son, Danilo, is actually the lost son of her best friend, Lourdes. From this point on, Thelma begins to consolidate herself as a real antagonist, starting by hiding the truth from Lourdes, even though he knew that his best friend had his son stolen, he traveled from Northeast Brazil to Rio de Janeiro in search of him and spent all these years in the anguish of not knowing where he was and suffering because of the your son's whereabouts. Then, she sets up for Danilo and Camila to separate, generating a fight that remains even for the innocent friend of Camila, who is a teacher at a municipal school, when Thelma convinces Danilo that he is being betrayed by his wife and he attacks the man.
At this time, the biological mother of Camila, Rita, arrives on Rio to have your daughter's forgiveness, who in turn refuses to forgive her for being abandoned. While she decides to help Lourdes find her lost son, since she met the woman who sold him, she says that a former health worker has the necessary paperwork to reveal Domenico's whereabouts. The man in question has a sick daughter and needs money to save her life, and Thelma takes advantage of this to bribe him and lie to Lourdes about what Rita said, generating disagreements between the two and Lourdes believing Rita lied. Later, Camila's mother discovers Thelma's cheating and realizes Danilo is Lourdes' lost son when he sees her bribing the doctor. Thelma bribes her, offering a good amount of money in exchange for her silence, further annoying Camila's mother, who refuses to take such a vile action and is even more horrified by Thelma, pretending to reveal the whole truth to Lourdes, which leads Thelma to run over the woman coldly and without an ounce of remorse. Rita's body is eventually found and cremated.
2021 pos-pandemic Return[]
Six months later, Brazil is at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and Lourdes records a video asking for help in finding her lost son, placing it on internet. Deciding to make Lourdes stop searching for her son, Thelma impersonates a woman on the internet saying she adopted Domenico and raised him until him was 18, when he died in a car accident, in order to make her believe her son was dead, shocking Lourdes, but not taking away from her the belief and intuition that her son is alive. Eventually, Lourdes's son, Magno, realizes the letter is fake, since the sender claims Domenico called him by name, knowing his brother did not call him that until he was sold by they father.
Camila lights a candle for the portrait of her deceased mother in Thelma's house, annoying her. At this point, her friend, Jane, is strongly suspicious of Thelma, photographing the traffic ticket Thelma got on the same day that Rita dead and realized her friend may to have been the author of the murder. She confronts Thelma and she ends up confessing. Horrified that her friend committed murder, Jane says to Thelma surrender herself to police, or, she will. Thelma lies she will surrender and feign remorse in order to deceive Jane while planning to kill her. She offers Jane a juice with a large amount of hypnotic, making Jane fall asleep in the car while Thelma takes her to the garage of her house, where, imitating her lyrics, writes a letter simulating Jane's suicide and calls the car engine to release gas and leaves the friend unconscious to die of carbon monoxide asphyxiation.
Camila and Danilo are planning to leave Thelma's house to have a place of their own, which bothers her because of the possibility of losing her son, in addition to the fact that she was already trying to damage their relationship in order to remove Danilo from the Lourdes family. At a certain point, Camila is applying class remotely to her students due the pandemic, when she listens, through the babysitter, Thelma saying that Danilo needs to separate from her and go to Portugal with her son and then, get married with another woman. Furious, Camila counters Thelma and the two fight badly. After this confrontation, Thelma sets up a plan to kill her daughter-in-law and remembers that the corrupt police officer, Belizario, can do this for her. She goes to him to order the crime and finds out he works for Alvaro da Nobrega, the same man who wants to buy her restaurant. She makes a deal to sell the restaurant in exchange for Alvaro kill Camila.
After ordering the murder, Thelma arrives home beaming, with flowers for Camila, pretending to make peace with her and Danilo and who has accepted their departure from her home, false but expressing genuine joy at the commissioned death of her daughter-in-law. On the day of the execution, Lurdes has premonitions and warns her children not to leave the house, including Camila, who ends up being instructed by Thelma not to listen to her mother and leave the house, despite the girl's fears that something might actually happen. A few seconds before the accident, Lourdes hears Camila's voice in her mind and calls her daughter, who gets run over when she answers the call, leaving Lourdes desperate. However, Camila manages to survive without many sequels, but will not walk for a while, which irritates Thelma, who goes to Alvaro to confront him. She says that he not only failed to have Camila dead, but also increased her problems, as now Camila's recognition will increase even more as "a woman, teacher, black, struggling, wheelchair and that she managed to overcome all difficulties" and she will not sell the restaurant to him as part of accordance. But Alvaro blackmails her saying once she sells the restaurant to him, he will not tell her son she tried to kill his wife.

Thelma proved to be overprotective, both of her family and of her property, while at the same time being a totally selfish person. Thelma's motherly love ends up being driven by pure selfishness and obsession on her part. However, despite everything, she can be considered a tragic character, since all her paranoia and obsession were the result of the trauma caused by the fire that destroyed her family in the first place. As revealed, she not only has a strong desire to be a mother, but also to be a grandmother. Basically the maternal instinct being taken to the extreme.
Her strong selfishness makes her put her interests above anything and anyone, doing everything to satisfy her interests, leading her to not only betray her friend and to have no regard for her, but also to take the extreme measure of killing someone who poses a threat to her plans.
