Simply referred to as "Them" by the survivors, are the titular main antagonists of the 2006 Japanese manga series Highschool of the Dead, as well as its 2010 anime adaptation.

They are flesh-eating humans who became infected with an unknown pathogen, causing them to become mindless zombies hellbent in feeding on any human beings they can find. They were erroneously named "Them" as they can no longer be considered as humans.

Biology[]

"Them" shares many traits as of that of the archetypal Zombies in fiction. Infected individuals will experience symptoms such as pain and tingling of the bite wound, as well as episodes of vomiting (usually with blood). As the infection advances, individuals will suffer neurological symptoms including lethargy and lack of coordination. Physically, "Them" have grayish skin tone, obvious signs that are they are no longer considered as humans. Their eyes have been rolling up and are colored in gray, signifying their poor eyesight. This results in decline of intelligence and motor function, causing Them to become unaware of their surroundings due to the infection causing blindness thus they rely on sounds to track their prey. Despite the decline in intelligence, some of "Them" have retained at least some personality such as the Thug smiling despite becoming reanimated and another "Them" was heard laughing. "Them" only feeds on humans, as they seemingly avoid animals as shown when Zeke bit one and "Them" simply ignored the puppy, although they are still attracted to its barking sounds.

"Them" possessed greater physical strength than that of a normal human, believing that their lack of pain sensors have caused it. Survivors inferred that becoming grabbed by "Them" is difficult to escape, if not impossible. Their mutation have granted them great durability which allows them to survive injuries that are otherwise fatal to a normal human such as burning or getting impaled by a sharp rod.

Despite their superior strength and durability, "Them" can still be killed. By sustaining any trauma in their head, "Them" would permanently die. Their reliance on echolocation has often been exploited by the survivors, such as creating noise to divert them away. "Them" are theorized to be reanimated corpses, believing they will suffer from the effects of decomposition although this is yet to be proven.

History[]

It is unknown how or when was the pathogen responsible for creating "Them" was created. Fujimi Academy fall to the outbreak as an infected individual managed to bit one of the school teacher at the front gate, causing the infection to spread throughout the premises of the school.

Eventually, the entire city of Tokonosu became overran by "Them", and subsequently the news broadcast stated that the infection has been considered a pandemic as it spreads worldwide.
