~ Therestina Kihara Lifeline |
Therestina Kihara Lifeline is a major antagonist in A Certain Scientific Railgun, serving as the main antagonist of the Poltergeist Arc and a minor antagonist of the Silent Party Arc.
She is a researcher of Academy City, the captain and leader of MAR (Multi Active Rescue) and one of the members of the Kihara family, being the granddaughter of Gensei Kihara. Like her grandfather, she's obsessed with achieving SYSTEM by creating the first Level 6 esper, willing to experiment on children to do this. She's the archenemy of Mikoto Misaka and Harumi Kiyama.
She is voiced by Sayaka Ohara in Japanese and Colleen Clinkenbeard in English, who both voice Erza Knightwalker in Fairy Tail.
Appearance[]
Therestina is a beautiful woman with blue eyes and long wavy orange hair, which is often tied in a ponytail. She has a well-endowed figure and wears a pair of glasses. She is seen wearing a black office suit with a pencil skirt, light brown stockings and white high-heeled shoes. She also wears a MAR uniform when in the field.
Personality[]
At first glance, Therestina appears to be a warm and friendly woman who exudes an air of elegance and authority yet is still quite approachable. She takes her job as captain of MAR very seriously and is dedicated to the safety of Academy City's citizens. However, she tends to be somewhat childish at times, decorating her office with various toys and memorabilia. She also has a sweet tooth and is fond of a specific kind of candy that comes out of small cylindrical tube where she easily guesses what color it is.
It soon revealed that this well-meaning façade belies a more darker, sinister character. In truth, Therestina is a very cruel, malevolent, sadistic, devious and cold-hearted individual, befitting her Kihara lineage. She's shown to be extremely ruthless and has no problem with using others as pawns for her goals or discarding them when she's no longer sees them as useful. Moreover, Therestina is highly psychotic and unstable, often breaking into maniacal laughter when things go her way. She's also quite arrogant and overconfident in her abilities, usually boasting about her plans and enjoys mocking her enemies when their at their lowest point.
Like her grandfather Gensei, Therestina is utterly obsessed with creating a level 6 Esper and achieving SYSTEM, claiming that its her right to perform such a feat. She also possesses social darwinistic traits, claiming that everybody in Academy City is merely a research specimen and has no hope of being anything greater.
Biography[]
Therestina is the granddaughter of Gensei Kihara. In her youth, she was used by Gensei as part of the creation of the Ability Body Crystal, which she willingly volunteered for stating happily that she was going to become Academy City's "dream" which is the achievement of creating a Level 6 and that she was being used a foundation for it.
Abilities[]
- High Intelligence: Therestina is a member of the Kihara Family, as such, she possesses a high-level of intellect and great scientific knowledge. She is the creator of Capacity Down, an anti-esper device capable of affecting even Level 5s like Mikoto Misaka, and developed her own portable railgun using data from Mikoto's own technique. She also studied Mikoto's ability carefully in order to counter it. Therestina is also shown to be quite manipulative and deceptive, fooling Anti-Skill and Judgment of her true identity and used Skill-Out gangs as test subjects for Capacity Down.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: As leader of MAR, Therestina has some skill in hand-to-hand combat, as shown when she effortlessly took down Harumi Kiyama when she charged at her during a fit of rage.
- Powered Suit Piloting: Therestina is a skilled pilot of powered suits, having used an HsPS-15, a custom powered suit and a Gigantic Advanced Movement Armor.
Equipment[]
- Custom Powered Suit: As the leader of MAR, Therestina can use an exclusive custom powered suit, superior to the mass-produced HsPS-15s MAR and other Academy City forces have. Like all powered suits, it enhances the user's mind and body for combat purposes. The custom powered suit wields an anti-barrier revolver shotgun and a prototype Railgun replica. It's also used by Therestina to pilot the Gigantic Advanced Movement Armor.
- Railgun: A large lance-like weapon developed by Therestina using data from Mikoto Misaka's signature technique. The weapon opens up like an umbrella before shooting. According to Therestina, it's supposed to be stronger than Mikoto's Railgun, but she was proven wrong when her weapon was overpowered and defeated by the original.
- Gigantic Advanced Movement Armor: A large mechanical powered suit used by MAR. The unit has no weapons, but with its large size it can practically overpower most opponents it may encounter. It also seems to be capable of defending itself against electric shocks. Its most notable attributes are the clamps that are attached to its arms, which can be used for smashing and grasping things. Most uniquely they can be fired as projectiles, though once fired the clamps are no longer usable and cannot be returned to the arm, so the pilot can simply eject the arm from the unit and replace it with one of the two additional arms on the suit's back. Finally, the mechanical unit makes use of rollers under its feet, which makes it more mobile. Since it is used by MAR and due to being colored yellow (for high visibility), plus its large size and durability, it can be inferred that the mechanical unit's original purpose is heavy-duty rescue operations.
