The Thing that Drifted Ashore is the titular main antagonist of the Junji Ito manga of the same name.
It is an individual of a gigantic, eel-like species of sea monster that appears in the Junji Ito short story of the same name.
Biology[]
The creatures all have eel-like bodies with multiple round structures on their heads. They also have tentacle-like protrusions on their skin, which has transparent portions that were speculated by the marine biologists that studied the dead creature to serve as a means for the creature to produce and emit bioluminescence when deep below the surface of the ocean.
History[]
One day, the body of a giant sea creature washed ashore on the beach of an unspecified Japanese island. The arrival of the dead monster drew in crowds, including multiple marine biologists, who attempted to study the creature. As the biologists continued to study the creature, they came upon a horrifying sight. Through transparent portions of the creatures skin, the bodies of hundreds of humans could be seen, all of whom were victims of a shipwreck which occurred seven years prior. Upon cutting open the creature's stomach to recover the bodies, it was shockingly discovered that they weren't dead after all; upon exposure to the fresh air, the humans abruptly awoke, and rushed about, screaming maniacally as the scientists attempted to subdue and restrain them.
Subsequent medical investigations found that all of the people consumed by the beast were left with varying degrees of mental illness, though their ultimate fate was never elaborated on. Instead of being killed like the creature's other targets, for seven long years, the people the creature consumed had managed to survive, but this was no miracle. From the day they were consumed, to the day that they were released, the people were forced to live as parasites and spend every day gazing upon the other grotesque denizens of the deep sea.
