Minions... CHARGE!
~ The Third Overlord in the game's trailer.

The Third Overlord is the titular villain of the video game Overlord and is a dark lord who has recently been revived by his loyal minions. He is also the son-in-law of the Second Overlord, the father of the Fourth Overlord and a former member of the Seven Heroes.

Personality and Traits[]

It's unknown what kind of person Third Overlord was, let alone how he looked like, only that he became a devourer of life-force and dark energy upon his revival and inheriting Overlord mantle. Nevertheless has a choice in the way he governs his land:

  • High Corruption: A ruthless tyrant who use and abuse his subjects as he sees fit while spreading his evil in more aggressive and destructive manner than his predecessors ever been, causing the world shake with fear and putting it into a chaotic dark era.
  • Low Corruption: Firm yet merciful Dark Lord who balances the world and ushers it into a new golden era, creating an institutionalized form of evil that becomes a new way of life for the lands he rules. This approach effectively made him a lesser of two evils given to how far his former comrades had fallen by the time he started his dark reign.

Upon becoming Third Overlord, he dons a set of ornate, wicked-looking metal armor complete with crown-like spikes protruding from the top of the helmet and magical left gauntlet to cast spells with and mentally guide his minions. His initial set, Steel Set, bared his upper arms, though subsequent retrieval of his scattered smelters and moulds saw upgrades that provided more coverage in addition of new weapons. Depending of his approach throughout his dark reign, Third Overlord's armor can be either darker and spikier with heat distortion around him (High Corruption) or clean and shiny not unlike traditional Knight in Shiny Armor (Low Corruption).

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Magically Enhanced Physiology: It can be inferred that the hero who would become the Third Overlord had undergone strict training regiment in order to hone his bodily functions to the pinnacle of human conditioning, effectively making him stronger, faster, tougher and better tuned to various types of physical sports than average mortal humans in addition of capable to fight for prolonged periods without tiring and brushing off otherwise severely crippling injuries. This in turn, allowed him to survive his supposed heroic sacrifice in taking down Second Overlord long enough for Gnarl and surviving minions to resusciate him. Following his restoration and inheritance of Overlord mantle, Third Overlord's physical parameters enhanced tenfold with retrieval of Dark Tower Objects brought him closer to attain his full potential.
  • Magic: Like other Overlords, Third Overlord possesses an array of dark magical powers in his disposal channeled through his left gauntlet.
    • Pyrokinesis: Third Overlord excels in conjuring and manipulating the element of fire.
      • Fireball Spell: Hurls a ball of fire that explodes and incinerates anything it struck upon impact.
      • Flamethrower Spell: A medium-ranged jet of fire.
      • Inferno Spell (High Corruption only): A medium-ranged spell that will set fire to anything in the area of effect and cause significant damage.
      • Combustion Spell (Low Corruption only): Similar to Inferno Spell albeit not harm civilians and other non-hostile beings.
    • Dominion/Mental Spells: Third Overlord displays the ability to influence the minds of his foes.
      • Slow: Causes the target to move slower than normal thus effectively a sitting duck.
      • Confusion: Magically confuse the target, causing them to attack random enemies. This can be beneficial if they ended up attacking their own allies or detrimental if targeting the caster instead.
      • Betrayal (High Corruption only): Magically forces a target to attack their own allies.
      • Submission (Low Corruption only): Magically forces the target to stand down and not attack the caster.
    • 'Shield Conjuration: Third Overlord can conjure barriers for defense.
      • Shield Spell: Conjures a simple barrier around the caster to protect against damage.
      • Shock Shield Spell: Similar to Shield Spell albeit with electricity coursing through the barrier thus frying enemies who get too close.
      • Infernal Shield Spell (High Corruption only): More powerful version of Shock Shield Spell. The barrier's ability to fry enemies who got too close is more catastrophic as Gnarl described it to be very "mean".
      • Sanctuary Spell (Low Corruption only): More powerful version of Shield Spell.
    • Minion Summoning and Control: Through their symbiotic link, Third Overlord can telepathically command his minions to carry out his bidding such as plundering others' dwellings of their valuables. This ability extends to influence the dark creatures so they can perform tasks that require finesse they lacked among other things.
      • Frenzy Spell: A spell to increase damage inflicted by the caster's minions and improves their defense and health.
      • Berserk Spell: Induces combat frenzy on the caster's minions that allows them to fight harder at the cost of negatively affecting their ability to discern friend and foe. Not even inanimate objects are spared from their rampage
      • Legion of Terror Spell (High Corruption only): Similar to Berserk Spell with additional effect in form of emanating an aura of terror which strikes fear in the hearts of all but stout-hearted heroes.
      • Legion of Honour Spell (Low Corruption only): Similar to frenzy albeit better and ensures one's minions to attack enemies only instead of everyone indiscriminately.
    • Life-force Absorption: Third Overlord can absorb residual life-force of those he killed, which essential to hasten the growth of minions within their hives thus subsequently ready to be summoned at the moment's notice. Although, considering his minions can do the same, Third Overlord usually has them gathering the energy throughout their raids on his behalf in normal circumstances.
  • Master Combatant: Even without his minions and powerful magic, Third Overlord is an extremely capable fighter, able to take out multiple opponents on ease. Upon attaining his full potential by recovering all Dark Tower Objects, he became a literal one-man army.
  • High Intellect: Third Overlord is as clever as he is mighty; his ingenuity allows him to utilize his minions' capabilities at their fullest as well as adapt and determine a plan with a more or less chance of success, including noting advantages of environmental attributes.
  • Leadership: Third Overlord leads scores of minions who follow him and very good at it.

History[]

With the aid of the cunning Gnarl, the dark lord is sent into the world to perform a series of missions that will increase his power and ultimately allow him to regain control over his Dark Domain.

Like any good dark lord, the Third Overlord is not one to risk his own life and thus has a near-endless supply of grotesquely violent minions by which to enforce his will.

When these minions fail he has his own arsenal of destructive spells to unleash on the world, once he has found the proper items by which to unlock them that is.
