He does not have any remorse for anyone's feelings and conflicts. He expects everyone should be like him, since he was surrounded by soldiers that longed for battle, returning to a normal life was a shell shock for Thorgil. His love for battle not being shared by his family and others around him made him feel ostracized from where he stood on the farm. He calls his own brother, who he tried to push his violent beliefs on a coward because how he did not want to fight Canute's forces. Same thing with Snake.

Biography[]

Past[]

Nothing much is known about Thorgil's past. All that is known is that Thorgil is 24 years old, so he had to of been born around 991 AD. He most likely joined the army at a young age, possibly 18-19 years old. He is extremely athletic and skilled at combat so the number of years he had to train to become that quick and skilled must of had started in his first years of adulthood. Based on his personality, Thorgil must have aspired to be like his father, who was supposedly the famous "Iron Fist Ketil". Since he was told this lie all his life, Thorgil most likely gained his love of combat from these stories since he was under the impression that his father was a famous and tough warrior, that he had to do him a solid and make him proud by following in his footsteps. Thorgil most likely was extremely confident in his childhood and had an extensive amount of pride since his father was "Iron Fist Ketil". So being the son of a "famous warrior" he had to act like the son of one. Since he probably worked on the farm most of his life, it's probably where he gained his strength, and being on the battlefield helped with that too. Since it's confirmed that Snake was his training partner, he was the one that taught Thorgil how to fight so aggressively and skillfully.

Slave Arc[]

Thorgil is first seen after returning with his father from a citizen's meeting. He meets his brother Olmar again after speaking to him and finds out he is interested in enlisting, Thorgil says it would be good for him since experiencing the battlefield toughens people up. While Thorgil is at the farm two thieves are caught stealing bread, once they are captured Thorgil witnesses his father passing down a punishment to the thieves that seem unfair. Thorgil suggests that they should beat the thieves 100 times to make sure they don't do it again. This makes Ketil feel nervous since they are only children, Thorgil implores that the kids be beaten, eventually Ketil agrees and decides to beat one child 20 times. Snake is disgusted by this while Ketil is full of regret and fear.

Sometime later, Ketil and his sons travel to the capital of Denmark to pay tribute to the late King Harald. While they stay in the capital, Olmar attempts to tryout for one of the Kings guards after being encouraged by Thorgil, Olmar's task is to slice a pig for a feast but he fails to do so. After he is mocked by other soldiers and builled, once he gets tired of it Olmar challenges one of the soldiers to restore his honor but is only laughed at. After drawing on him Olmar and the soldier get into a duel, Thorgil wearing a cloak throws a coin into the soldier's eye while charging at Olmar. He then falls onto Olmar's sword and dies. Thorgil emerges and congratulates Olmar on his first kill, he then tells him "he could take it from here". Thorgil proceeds to murder and mutilate all the men, he then laughs about it and is satisfied with what he has done. He is then confronted by guards about his actions, after trying to justify that Olmar had won an honorable duel he finds out the dueling is now illegal. This surprises Thorgil and refuses to believe it, he then is told he will be arrested. Thorgil obviously doesn't allow this and kills all the guards trying to arrest him in front of the crowd and his family. Thorgil and his family escape on Lief Erikson's boat after being convinced to take them there in return of Thorfinn.

After returning to the farm, Canute sets out the arrest of Ketil's family and gets the Jomsvikings and Kings Guard to fight. After hearing of this, Ketil raises an army of farmers and bodyguards to fight Canute. Thorgil takes advantage of this to attempt to kill Canute during the battle. As the battle commences Olmar and Thorgil make a plan to sneak behind Canute while the armies are fighting. They plan to swim behind their ships and ambush him. Olmar is skeptical of the plan but Thorgil forces him to go through with it. Thorgil swims with his sword on his back to the flank of Canute. Unable to do it, Olmar nearly drowns swimming out with the weight of his sword on his back and goes back to shore. With Thorgil on his own, he runs up to Canute and kills two of his bodyguards, as he attacks Canute, he deflects his attack. As Thorgil is about to kill the king, Wulf tackles Thorgil, strangling him. Thorgil eventually overpowers Wulf by gauging out his eye. Injured, Thorgil retreats back to the water and goes back to the farm. With Ketil injured and a large number of men killed. The decision to surrender is up to Olmar, Thorgil tries to convince him to fight but he agrees to surrender. This shocks Thorgil and his mother who is also present. Thorgil angrily walks off muttering the words "cowards". After the battle if over and Thorfinn, Bug-Eyes, Einar, and Lief leave for Iceland. Thorgil leaves the farm, he becomes a wanderer after the battle and is not heard of again.

Trivia[]

  • Although it isn't confirmed, Thorgil killed a bear before according to some stories, which is why people are so afraid of him.
  • It is implied that Thorgil never discovered the truth behind his father's past and left the farm thinking that he was the real Iron Fist Ketil.
