Deputy Thornton is a minor character in the comics Psycho Thriller and Night Springs, and a minor antagonist in its 2023 sequel Alan Wake II.
He is one of the Bright Falls sheriff's deputies, along with his partner Mulligan, who was present in the incident in 2010. Thirteen years later, he become a member of the Cult of the Tree, for protect the townspeople from the Dark Presence, until he and his partner became taken after accidentally killing a innocent woman.
In Alan Wake, he was voiced by Bill Lobley. In Alan Wake II, he was voiced and motion-captured by Todd Boyce.
Biography[]
Background[]
Little is known of Thornton's past, but he moved to Bright Falls in the 1990s and became a deputy sheriff of the town. He became partnered with fellow deputy Mulligan, and the two became inseparable despite their frequent bickering.
Alan Wake[]
While Thornton and Mulligan has no physical appearance in the game, he is called by FBI agent Robert Nightingale to help in the search for Alan Wake, but expresses his distrust of the agent over local police scanners and arrests Barry Wheeler and Rose Marigold.
He is later heard over a park ranger's radio ringing in an observation tower, suggesting that he call a doctor for Rose, who has been controlled by the Dark Presence. He is once again heard on the airwaves when Pat Maine interviews him on the local radio station. He ignores most of Maine's questions in an evasive manner.
Cult of the Tree[]
Prior to 2023, Thornton and Mulligan joined the Cult of the Tree under the Koskela brothers' leadership to protect Bright Falls against the Dark Presence. While as members, the deputies relished in the power they received, but it's left ambiguous if it was the result of the Return manuscript for this behavior.
Alan Wake II[]
Thornton and Mulligan are assigned to watch over Robert Nightingale's corpse until FBI agents Saga Anderson and Alex Casey arrive, which the two deputies show apprehension to investigating the case. The two deputies are briefly heard after Nightingale returns as a taken, with Thornton bickering with Mulligan that magic isn't real. While Saga and Casey continue their investigation, the deputies accidentally kill Monica Thompson while patrolling in the woods for any signs of taken. Despite their guilt, the two decided to dump her body in the Huotari well at Coffee World to cover up their crime. However, their remorse and fear over the incident allowed the Dark Presence to turn them into overlap guardians since it couldn't corrupt Ilmo.
The taken deputies then start to stalk Saga in Watery, exposing themselves as members of the cult by wearing dear masks. Spotting Mulligan, Anderson follows him and Thornton to the Watery motorcycle club to obtain the clicker, but the deputies take it to prevent her from obtaining the item. Despite their attempts to thwart Saga, she is able to obtain the clicker after entering the overlap and killing the taken deputies.
