One day, the Creator God Izanagi gave an order to the Three Noble Gods he had created…
~ It is explained how the Primordial God Izanagi created the Three Noble Gods, giving them command of the world.

The Three Noble Gods (in Japanese: 三貴神, Miki Kami), also known as the Three Precious Children, are supporting antagonists in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

They are the three most powerful and important Gods of the Shinto Pantheon, who were created by the Shinto God of Creation Izanagi who entrusted they with the command of the world, dividing it between all three of his children. They have great influence among the Gods, and they reside in Takamagahara.

Overview[]

The Three Noble Gods are the three main Deities of the Shinto Pantheon, and they are three siblings created by the Shinto God of Creation Izanagi. The three Shinto Deities that are part of it command the world with each of them commanding a respective area of the world: Heavens, Ocean and Earth. Their leader is Amaterasu Okami, the eldest of the three siblings, and although they consider Humans inferior and punish anything that undermines the dignity of the Gods, some of its members like Susano'o no Mikoto are more open than other Gods to accepting the potential of Humanity.

Plot[]

The Three Noble Gods are the three most important Shinto Deities of all, created at the time by the Shinto God of Creation Izanagi who gave them the order to govern the world, assigning three different areas to each of them: to Amaterasu Okami, the eldest daughter, he assigns command over the Heavens, to Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, the middle son, he assigns command over the Ocean, and to Susano'o no Mikoto, the younger son, he assigns command over the Earth.

The three thus begin to command the world, and Susano'o no Mikoto descends to Earth facing all the Gods and Demons who threaten Human lives by brandishing the sword Totsuka-no-Tsurugi. Among them, Susano'o faces and kills Yamata no Orochi, a Demon inside which Susano'o finds the sword Ame-no-Murakumo no Tsurugi, which becomes his new master sword. After this victory, Susano'o becomes an inspiration to all swordsmen in the world. Several years later, Susano'o witnesses a boy who, with a sword, manages to defeat a Demon before his intervention, and curiously questions the boy, discovering that, inspired by Susano'o, he created the art of swordsmen.

This surprises Susano'o quite a bit, who at that point understands the true capabilities of Humanity and that the art of swordsmen can evolve infinitely, and he becomes the first God in history to ask Humans to teach him something. Susano'o returns to Takamagahara to communicate the decision to his siblings, but both Amaterasu Okami and Tsukuyomi no Mikoto oppose Susano'o's decision, arguing that learning the art of swordsmen from Humans would damage the dignity of the Gods. Susano'o at that point decides to abandon the Three Noble Gods and explains why he finds the art of swordsmen intriguing, so Amaterasu allows him to learn it by observing Humans and without being taught it directly, but in exchange banishes him forever from Takamagahara for having violated the dignity of the Gods.

Susano'o accepts the decision and descends to Earth, spending the following centuries learning the art of swordsmen by observing Humans refine it over time, then becoming very passionate about the Bakumatsu era of Japan where the art of swordsmen reaches its peak and becomes evolves to be able to kill. Susano'o no Mikoto also had the sword Ame-no-Murakumo no Tsurugi modified by the combined efforts of the Humans Yasutsuna Hoki, Munechika Sanjo and Kunitsuna Awataguchi and the Gods Hephaestus and Kanayagokami, thus creating the katana Onikiri Ame-no-Murakumo, the more powerful than the Heavens which becomes his new main Divine Weapon.

Millennia after Susano'o's abandonment by the Three Noble Gods, when the Ragnarok Tournament is proclaimed, Susano'o is chosen by Zeus to be a Gods Fighters, the representatives of the Gods during the competition. When thanks to Hermes he discovers that Soji Okita, the greatest representative of the Bakumatsu era, would fight for Humans in the Tenth Round, Susano'o prevents Anubis to fight in the Tenth Round for the Gods, taking his place to be able to compete with his Human counterpart and test the greater expressiveness of the swordsmen's art, choosing Kyoto at the end of the Edo Period as the arena.

Thus, in the Tenth Round Susano'o no Mikoto, representing the Gods, faces Soji Okita, representing Humans, all under the eyes of Amaterasu, Tsukyomi and Izanagi, sitting in the stands, in a place of honor. In the end, despite managing to reach the peak of the swordsmen during the match, Susano'o is defeated and killed by Okita, even though he claims to have shown off the art he loves so much. Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Izanagi are shocked and despaired by Susano'o's death.

Powers and Abilities[]

Divine Physiology, Strength and Stamina: Being all Gods, they all possess Divine characteristics that allow them to never age and not being able to die of old age or at the hands of deadly weapons. However, they can be injured and killed by physical attacks with superhuman strength or by Divine Weapons. They also possess abilities superior to those of ordinary Humans, such as attack, defense and speed much higher than normal. All three are the strongest Shinto Gods of all, second only to the Shinto God of Creation Izanagi, their father.

Divine Weapons: Most of the Three Noble Gods use Divine Weapons in battle. They are similar to normal Human weapons, however they possess very high power and are indestructible unless hit by Divine Powers or other Divine Weapons. The most common Divine Weapon among the Three Noble Gods are the swords that Susano'o no Mikoto uses in combat, and which constantly changes.

Miscellaneous Abilities: Some of them are also able to use other unusual abilities, such as control natural elements such as fire and water and be able to transform into any animal or creature they want, even obtaining its own abilities.

Trivia[]

  • In Shinto Mythology, even if the Three Noble Gods do not formally exist, the three most important Shinto Deities do exist, constituting the central Deities of the imperial Japanese mythological cycle recorded in the Kojiki (c. 712 CE) and the Nihon Shoki (720 CE). However, if Susano'o and Amaterasu are there in this group of the Shinto Mythology, Tsukuyomi is absent and is replaced by Ōkuninushi.
