Villain Overview

When the name of time was still new, there was a war in the First Realm of Creation, a war between dragons and their mortal enemies. A great warrior of the Dragon army, Thunderfang, the Shatter Dragon of Chaos believed his war victories entitled him to become one of the Source Dragons. When he was denied this honor, he unleashed chaos upon the fabled City of Temples. There, the devout followers of the Source Dragons, those who ran the Tournament of Sources, would have been destroyed if it were not for... the Arc Dragon of Focus! The Shatter Dragon, whose powers were fueled by the souls of his consumed enemies, blasted weaponized storms of chaotic power... yet Focus is the natural enemy of Chaos. In victory, the Arc Dragon of Focus imprisoned Thunderfang deep beneath the ground of the First Realm, where he remains in chains to this day. But all that has been chained may one day be unchained.
~ Rox describing Thunderfang's history leading up to his imprisonment.
noicon
Source Dragons! I have reaped the soul of one of your mortal Conduits! You can deny me no longer! I know you hear me, and I will not stop until I devour all of your souls as well!
~ Thunderfang to the Source Dragons after absorbing Lloyd Garmadon's soul.
noicon
How dare you seven keep all the power for yourselves!? I BELONG AMONGST THE SOURCE DRAGONS!!!
~ Thunderfang's villainous breakdown and last words before being destroyed by the Arc Dragon of Focus.

Thunderfang is one of the overarching antagonists (alongside the Forbidden Five) of the Ninjago: Shatterspin comic series and the secondary antagonist of Ninjago: Dragons Rising, serving as one of the overarching antagonists (alongside the Forbidden Five and Ras' master) of Season 2 and the main antagonist of Season 3. He is the Arc Dragon of Focus's arch-nemesis.

He is a giant, soul-consuming dragon and a son of the Firstbourne, originally from the First Realm and the living source of the dark powers possessed by the Forbidden Five, who is bent on causing as much chaos and destruction as possible and enact revenge on the Source Dragons for denying him the rank of one of them centuries ago. Following his defeat by the Arc Dragon of Focus and subsequent imprisonment beneath the Storm Village, Thunderfang manipulated the Forbidden Five with the promise of sharing more of his power with them in exchange for his freedom.

Following his release however, he drained them from their souls instead and battled against the Ninja in his quest for vengeance against the Source Dragons. He had been defeated for the second time and has since become a ghost in the Spectral Lands, where he started a campaign for his return to power, and become a Source Dragon.

He is voiced by Deven Mack, who also voices Nokt and Arin in the same series, and previously voiced Vangelis in Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.

Biography[]

Past[]

Thunderfang among the first generation of dragons born to and mothered by the Firstbourne in the the Realm of Oni and Dragons and at some point became the highest Arc Dragon and harnessed magic to gain the ability to absorb the souls and with them powers of others to in turn amplify his own. During the War of Oni and Dragon, he served as a general and war hero in the Dragon army. Throughout the war, he defeated many Oni through his power of soul absorption and at some point encountered The Omega, further enhancing his power, allowing him to create Chaos with his dragon energy, and earning him the title of "Shatter Dragon of Chaos" which refected his tumultuous nature. Following the war and his many accomplishments during it, he yearned to become granted the rank of a Source Dragon, but got denied.

Furious, he became bitter with a sense of vengeance against the Source Dragons and intended to steal their souls in order to gain their powers. In his first act of retaliation, Thunderfang attacked the City of Temples when it appeared in the Realm of Oni and Dragons for the Tournament of the Sources, intent on killing the followers of the Source Dragons who resided there via the Winds of Chaos. However, his rampage on the City of Temples was interrupted by the champion of the Source Dragons and mortal avatar of the Source Dragon of Focus, the Arc Dragon of Focus.

The two dragons fought with the Arc Dragon of Focus eventually defeating the Shatter Dragon and imprisoning him beneath the grounds of the Realm of Oni and Dragons with five Prismatic Steel chains, however this did not end his desire to be a source dragon and upon learning that his chains can be destroyed through five prismatic blades (one for each chain) he vowed he will be freed and reap vengeance on the Source Dragons. At some point during his imprisonment he came up with a plan to escape involving manipulating five power hungry individuals into destroying his chains. To accomplish said plan he gave part of his Chaos to the five individuals in the Wyldness named Nokt, Rox, Zarkt, Kur, and Drix, granting them Elemental Powers and Theroxian Magic as well as allowing them to create Shatterspin. As a result of using his evil power, the five would eventually be corrupted by it and come to be known as the Forbidden Five.

Season 3[]

Season 3: Part 1[]

Millennia later after a dangerous cosmic event known as "The Merge" fused all the realms, the first realm among them, into one, Thunderfang is met with the Forbidden Five, which he expects. He agrees to give them the full extent of his powers if they released him. He gave them a gem that they subsequently crushed, corrupting the peaceful Dragonians, who were living right next to his prison, into the Dragonian Trackers which would help them find the prismatic blades. Rox and Nokt cut the first two chains with the Red and Green Prismatic Blades. Rox soon cuts another chain with the formerly broken blade Kur retrieved. Zarkt and Drix cut the last two chains with the ninja fighting them and trying to stop it. Free, he consumed the Forbidden Five's souls and then later emerges from the ground and the Ninja and Rogue attack him. Thunderfang summons the Dragonian Trackers and senses that one of the ninja is a Source Dragon conduit, and figures out it's Lloyd. He later consumed Lloyd's soul during the battle, but it is undone when he is hit with Arin's bottle of healing elixir after the latter's instructed by Lord Ras on how to accurately aim at the Shatter Dragon in the Winds of Chaos, and he is defeated the Oni souls as well as Lloyds soul being released as his body crumbles into soul energy.

However he soon finds himself on the verge of gaining even more powerful when his own spirit appears in the Spectral Lands as a ghost and he encounters Morro who promises to protect him thinking he wants to move on to have eternal peace, but after Thunderfang consumes a group of four Soul Suckers, Thunderfang devours Morro's soul and laughs as his eyes glow yellow.

Between parts[]

Now in the Spectral Lands, Thunderfang discovered that he could use the Well of the Lost to evolve into a Source Dragon via a ritual that required mixing the healing elixir it contained with a large number of souls. Realizing he couldn't do it on his own he released the souls of the Forbidden Five and transformed them into ghosts with the power of soul absorption and had them absorb the souls of some Dragonians which he transformed into Spectral Dragonians to give himself and the Forbidden Five an army. He then dispatched the Forbidden Five and Spectral Dragonians across the Merged Realms to absorb souls for his ritual, beginning his Spectral Invasions by sending Kur to the village of Abracalabria in Mysterium. He later sent Drix to the Administration and at least one of the Forbidden Five to the City of Temples among other locations across the Merged Realms.

Season 3: Part 2[]

Waiting at the Well of the Lost along with the rest of the Forbidden Five, Thunderfang commented that the Source Dragons will rue the day they rejected him as Drix arrived in the Spectral Lands and released the souls he reaped in the Administration from his Spectral Flute into the Well of the Lost. He later sent Zarkt to the Land of Lee and watched as Rox transferred her reaped souls into the Well of the Lost before sending her off again and sending Nokt to Imperium. Upon Nokt returning from Imperium and transferring what few souls he still had left into the well the perplexed ghost dragon chastised him, commenting that Imperium's a vastly populated land. Shortly thereafter Rox returned and deposited her souls into the well, causing it to surge with energy as Thunderfang began absorbing it and evolving into a Source Dragon.

A short time later as he was in the midst of his evolution and grew spikes and a huge claw on his left arm he sensed the ninjas plot to awaken the Arc Dragon of Focus and as such promptly informed the Forbidden Five while questioning the ninjas audacity to awaken his mortal enemy. In an attempt to stop their plot he sent some Spectral Dragonians along with Kur to the Cave of Bells in Djinjago and Zarkt to the Cave of Bells in Mysterium while keeping Nokt, Rox, Drix, and the remaining Spectral Dragonians in the Spectral Lands as he continued to evolve. Nearing the final stage of his evolution, Thunderfang declared that the Source Dragons refused him of his rightful place among them and for denying him he will force himself into their ranks to make them pay for rejecting him.

Just as he finished his evolution into the Source Dragon of Chaos Lloyd and Arin successfully summoned the Arc Dragon of Focus with the Unbidden Storm. Thinking that if it's there the Source Dragons must truly be afraid Thunderfang proclaimed that while the Arc Dragon of Focus defeated him once it won't again now that he had the power of a Source Dragon and began battling the Arc Dragon. While he initially gained the upper hand in the battle the Arc Dragon of Focus managed to knock Thunderfang back into the Well of the Lost and destroy it along with the hill it was located on after getting help from Lloyd and Arin. Upon the destruction of the Well of the Lost, Thunderfang was defeated once again and disappeared, releasing a surge of soul energy which returned the souls to the Hollow Ones while simultaneously dispelling the Forbidden Five and Spectral Dragonians.

Appearance[]

Sora: I knew he was big.

Kai: Yeah, but that is like big-big.

~ Sora and Kai about Thunderfang's size.

As a mortal, Thunderfang is a colossal red black and purple dragon with bony spikes on his chin, six pink glowing eyes, a thin body, and skeletal black wings with glowing red and purple energy surging through them.

As a ghost, Thunderfang heavily resembles his mortal form though his skin is blue.

As the Source Dragon of Chaos, Thunderfang's entire body's covered in spikes and he has a large swordlike claw on his left arm.

Personality[]

What you call a deal has always been my plan. Why do you think I chose to empower five of you to begin with? I am held by five chains, chains that can only be cut by five Prismatic Blades. You have been defeated. Humiliated. So have I. You crave more power to crush your enemies and so do I. Find the blades, set me free and I will grant you the power you want.
~ Thunderfang to the Forbidden Five

Thunderfang is quite power hungry and entitled, demanding to be/have the powers of a Source Dragon. He is also rather sadistic, and quite the manipulator. For instance, he tried to appeal to the Forbidden Five's emotions and aspirations for them to free him, only for him to gleefully kill them once he's been set free. Thunderfang's power hungry nature might have been due to consuming the Oni's souls to fuel his powers, which made him addicted for more power. Thunderfang cleary holds resentment toward the source dragons for denying him the rank of source dragon after everything he did for them he felt betrayed and after they sealed him underground this only fueled his hatred of the source dragons. Doc Wyatt the head writer posted that Thunderfang does care about his mother Firstbourne which might show at one point in time he could have been a great dragon before bitterness and entitlement to power consumed him.

Abilities[]

Last time, it took an Arc Dragon of Focus to defeat me! You puny mortals have no chance!
~ Thunderfang boasting about his abilities to the Ninja after he's freed.
There are some things that only grow stronger in the rot of death, I'm not surprised that blasphemous old lizard is one of them.
~ Bleckt on how Thunderfang's spirit was able to find more power
  • Dragon Physiology - As a dragon, Thunderfang has access to the following abilities:
    • Flight - Thunderfang can fly using his wings.
    • Bipedalism - Thunderfang is a biped dragon, meaning he moves most of the time with only his two hind legs.
    • Longevity - Thunderfang was able to survive his imprisonment for eons, being also between the first generation after Firstbourne.
    • Superhuman Strength - Due to his immense size, Thunderfang has superhuman strength, being able to smash out of his prison after being freed and swat Arin away like a fly.
    • Superhuman Durability - Thunderfang possesses remarkable durability, being able to withstand three Rising Dragon attacks from the ninja at once.
    • Wing Barriers - As seen in his first battle against the Arc Dragon of Focus, Thunderfang can shield himself from attacks with his wings.
    • Telepathy - Similar to a few other dragons, Thunderfang possesses the ability to communicate with other beings by using telepathic powers.
    • Draco-Ergokinesis - Like other powerful dragons such as Source Dragons, Arc Dragons, and Riyu, Thunderfang is capable of manipulating his dragon energy, which he fuels through the consumption of other individuals' souls.
  • Chaos Embodiment - True to his title, Thunderfang embodies the power of Chaos.
    • Chaos Energy Manipulation - Thunderfang can also create and manipulate chaotic energy.
    • Corruption Inducement - Thunderfang's dragon energy is characterized by its ability to corrupt those who come in contact with it. The nature of the corrupting energy is particularly evident in factions such as the Wolf Clan and Dragonian Trackers, which succumbed to its effects after harnessing it.
    • Lightning Bolt Projection - Thunderfang can unleash powerful bolts of lightning out of his wings.
    • Winds of Chaos - After consuming many Oni souls, Thunderfang gained the ability to conjure the Winds of Chaos, which take the form of a tumultuous storm with colossal tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.
    • Power Bestowal/Augmentation - Thunderfang bestowed the Forbidden Five with some of his energy, which granted them various dark powers, and even mentioned that he could give them more power.
    • Elemental Powers Bestowal - Thunderfang was able to grant the Forbidden Five their own Elemental Powers.
    • Flight/Levitation Bestowal - Thunderfang was able to grant the Forbidden Five the power of flight after they broke his gem.
    • Weatherly Presence Bestowal - Thunderfang was able to grant the Forbidden Five the power to create chaotic storms merely through their presence.
    • Magic Bestowal - Thunderfang was able to grant the Forbidden Five the ability to use Theroxian Magic.
    • Soul Consumption - Thunderfang is capable of consuming the souls/life force and powers of anyone he comes across to increase his own.
  • Ghost physiology: Once his spirit was transformed into a ghost, Thunderfang was now able to use the following abilities:
    • Immortality: Thunderfang is unable to die naturally due to lacking a mortal body.
    • Spectral Perception: Thunderfang can perceive hidden spiritual energy.
    • Spectrokinesis: Thunderfang can manipulate and control other ghosts, such as the Forbidden Five and the Spectral Dragonians.
    • Poltergeization: Thunderfang can transform others into ghosts, which he did to the Five and the Spectral Dragonians.
