Calypso, also known by her alias Tia Dalma, is one of the overarching antagonists of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

She is the former lover of Davy Jones, who cruelly abandoned him and gave him power over The Flying Dutchman, being directly responsible for his descent into villainy. She was bound in mortal form as Tia Dalma until the Brethren Court released her, at which point she summoned a storm to wrathfully kill him and his entire crew. She is also responsible (offscreen) for giving Angelica Teach the ability to perform the Profane Ritual, setting off the events of the fourth film, as well as being directly responsible for the events of the second and third.

She is played by actress Naomie Harris who also played Shriek in Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Biography[]

Past[]

Long ago Calypso was born to Atlas and became a sea Goddess. At some unknown point in her life, she met a sailor named Davy Jones who fell in love with her and she in turn fell in love with him. As a reward for said love, she decided to make him captain of The Flying Dutchman, a ship that carried souls who died at sea to the afterlife. But there was a catch: Jones could only step on land once every ten years; yet he would be granted immortality. Jones accepted the duty, and performed it for ten years. But when he could finally be on land again, Calypso was nowhere to be found. So he sold her out to the Bretheren Court, who imprisoned her in human form. However, he was so guilty over what he did he cut out his own heart and locked it away in a chest; hidden from the world. As a human Calypso took the name Tia Dalma and over time became a highly infamous voodoo priestess. She also met a certain Jack Sparrow, and it's implied they had a romantic/sexual history.

Dead Man's Chest[]

She appears in this film when Jack and co came to her shack for help. There, she seemed quite taken by Will Turner's good looks. She also told everyone the tale of Davy Jones, and gave Jack the iconic jar of dirt (it'd help because Davy Jones can only set foot on land once every ten years) with the payment for it being 'Jack' the undead monkey. Therefore, off went the crew, leaving Tia alone in her shack... or so they thought.

After Jack was devoured by the Kracken, the despondent crew returned to Tia's shack. However, hope was not lost as she informed them there was a chance to save Jack from Davy Jones' Locker; and they needed a captain who knew the waters of World's End. With that, she introduced the ressurected Barbossa, much to everyone's suprise.

At World's End[]

Tia joined the crew on their quest to World's End. She sailed with them to Singapore and was involved in the fight against Cutler Beckett's men. Then the crew, including her, sailed to Davy Jones' Locker; where they were all reunited with Jack. Following that, while searching for a way back to the mortal world, the crew encountered many souls floating adrift in the water. Tia told Pintel and Ragetti the story of Calypso and Davy Jones... well, more like the part about him ferrying souls who died at sea to the other side. Caressing her locket, she reminisced that Davy was once human. When the crew saw Weatherby Swann among the deceased, she stated he was at peace, menaing there wasn't a way of bringing him back with them.

Also in this film, Tia's true identity was revealed to be the goddess Calypso. Before the Fourth Bretheren Cout conviened, she was locked in the brig. There, she had a brief conversation with Davy Jones.

Using all nine Pieces of Eight, Calypso was set free (by Barbossa and Regetti), but during the process she learned the identity of the person who sold her out: her own old lover Davy Jones. Furious, she grew to several stories tall in a matter of moments. After listening to Barbossa she cried out in her native tongue and exploded into millions of crabs. By her an enormous sea storm was kicked off, and what followed was an epic battle between the pirates and the East India Trading Company armada. During said battle, Davy Jones was mortally wounded by a stab to the heart. His last word was "Calypso", before falling into the sea (where he was embraced by it; for Calypso still loved him in her own way).

After Jones' defeat, the storm subsided.
