~ Ajak telling Ikaris how the Blip has allowed Tiamut to be born. |
Tiamut the Communicator is the final antagonist of the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals.
He is an infant Celestial incubating within Earth's core to reach full size by gaining energy from the ever-growing human population, eventually reaching a point where it causes the "Emergence", in which he hatches from the planet, utterly destroying it in the process.
Personality
Although Tiamut had been programmed before he was born to destroy Earth and then create life and suns around the galaxy, he proved to be very different from any other Celestial. This was demonstrated during the Emergence, when he joined the Eternals in the Uni-Mind, sacrificing his own life to save all the individuals on Earth.
Appearance
Tiamut is a titanic golden Celestial, with four yellow glowing eyes and broad blade-like shoulder protrusions.
History
Background
Tiamut's embryo was first planted in Earth billions of years in the past, among many other Celestials. To ensure he would hatch, Arishem sent the Eternals to Earth, instructing them to help humanity progress in their development and population to direct energy to the embryo, as well as to kill any Deviants on the planet.
Eternals
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which the Avengers restored half of all universal life after Thanos eradicated it with the Infinity Stones, Tiamut had finally reached the maximum energy required to emerge from Earth, causing a global earthquake that both alerted the Eternals to his presence and freed the Deviants. Ajak, who had known of this plan, decided to prevent this, only for Ikaris, who still felt devoted to Arishem, to have her killed by Kro.
Later, Sersi, who had gained Ajak's ability to contact Arishem, discovered of Tiamut's existence from him, and decided to prevent his Emergence via the Uni-Mind. The Eternals discover that he is awakening underneath a volcanic island on the Indian Ocean and travel their to stop him, where they also battle Kro, Ikaris and Sprite, the latter two of whom are attempting to stop them from putting Tiamut to sleep.
As the battle continues, Tiamut slowly rises from the Earth's crust, with his head, hand and shoulder emerging before Sersi uses the Uni-Mind to transform him into marble, presumably killing him and saving Earth from destruction. However, it is revealed that Tiamut joined the Uni-Mind as he lend the Eternals his power to kill him as it can be possible that like Ajak, he also believed that Humanity is worth saving.
