~ Pruiting as he is arrested for rape. |
Tim Pruiting is the main antagonist of the Law & Order episode "The Violence of Summer". He is a drug dealer who rapes a woman named Monica DeVries with the help of two underlings.
He was portrayed by Al Shannon.
Early life[]
Pruiting is a small-time drug dealer with a long criminal record including assault and battery as well as selling and possessing drugs, mostly cocaine and crack. He moves most of his product through two petty criminals named Howard Metzler and Steven Hanauer.
One night shortly before the events of the episode, Metzler and Hanauer brought their friend Ryan Cutrona to Pruiting's crack house to get high. Reporter Monica DeVries shows up there as well, pretending to buy cocaine as research for a story on the drug trade. Pruiting overpowers and rapes her while Metzler and Hanauer hold her down and a terrified Cutrona just stands there.
DeVries reports the rape to the police, and NYPD Sergeant Max Greevey and Detective Mike Logan soon arrest Metzler, Hanauer, and Cutrona, who are too afraid of Pruiting to identify him as the ringleader of the assault.
"The Violence of Summer"[]
When the results of DeVries' rape kit come back, Executive Assistant District Attorney Ben Stone and Assistant District Attorney Paul Robinette, who are prosecuting the case, are stunned to discover that the DNA in the semen sample does not match Metzler, Hanauer, or Cutrona. The case against them is dismissed, but Stone and Robinette ask Greevey and Logan to reopen their investigation.
Greevey and Logan have DeVries undergo a hypnotherapy session in which she recalls details of the rape not previously in evidence, including the fact that there was another assailant who raped her while Metzler and Hanauer held her down; she identifies her rapist as "Tim". Greevey and Logan reexamine the crime scene and find glass shards from a broken bottle that DeVries said her rapist threatened her with; it has Pruiting's fingerprints on it.
Greevey and Logan go to Pruiting's apartment, where they find him in bed with a prostitute. They arrest him for rape and assault, but he tries to get out of trouble by lying that Greevey did not read him his rights. Ultimately, however, they are able to make the charges stick by tricking Metzler and Hanauer into identifying Pruiting as DeVries' rapist by saying that he was blaming it all on them. Metzler and Hanauer are then convicted of attempted rape, while Pruiting is convicted of first-degree rape, and all three are imprisoned.
