“ | Stepping off your path created a nexus event, which left unchecked, could branch off into madness, leading to another Multiversal War. But don't worry, to make sure that doesn't happen, the Time Keepers created the TVA and all its incredible workers. The TVA has stepped in to fix your mistake and set time back on its predetermined path. | „ |

“ | Once I isolated our timeline, all I had to do was manage the flow of time and prevent any further branches. Hence, the TVA. Hence, the Time-Keepers and a highly efficient bureaucracy. Hence, ages and ages of cosmic harmony. | „ |
~ He Who Remains explaining the purpose of the TVA to Loki Laufeyson and Sylvie Laufeydottir. |
The Time Variance Authority, often abbreviated as the TVA, are the main characters of the Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series Loki and the secondary antagonists of the 2024 superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine.
It is a quasi-religious bureaucratic organization founded by He Who Remains in order to protect the Multiverse by preserving the proper flow of time, preventing the rise of his hostile Variants, which includes Kang the Conqueror. The agency is tasked to maintain the "Sacred Timeline", eliminating branching timelines caused by nexus events in order to retain stability. Those who are "employed" at the TVA are actually Variants who were abducted from the Sacred Timeline and brainwashed to serve the agency's agenda. After He Who Remains was killed by Sylvie Laufeydottir, the Sacred Timeline branched off.
Following these events, Loki, Mobius and Hunter B-15 sought to reform the organization to serve as a defense against Kang and his variants while stopping the pruning of the new timeline branches. With the public revelation that everyone was Variants, the new Judge's Council agreed to support this for the most part, although General Dox went rogue in an attempt to protect the Sacred Timeline. However, Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes sought to take over the TVA themselves to pick up where He Who Remains left off. Their attempts to take over quickly failed as Renslayer was pruned by a mind controlled X-05 and Loki destroys the Temporal Loom, reviving the rest of the timelines in the form of a Yggdrasil-like tree, and taking He Who Remains' place at the end of time. The TVA then dedicates themselves to protecting all timelines as well as tracking the rest of He Who Remains' variants.
History[]
Past[]
According to the TVA propaganda, countless timelines battled one another for dominance across the Multiverse in a cataclysmic war that lasted for eons and nearly resulted in the absolute destruction of existence. To prevent this, the Time-Keepers brought peace and order to the Multiverse by arranging the timelines into a single "Sacred Timeline". In order to preserve the timeline's proper flow, the Time-Keepers then created the Time Variance Authority to police the Multiverse from Variants who create nexus events by stepping off of the path that the Time-Keepers created. If nexus events are left unchecked, the timeline could branch off and lead to another Multiversal War.
However, the truth is that the real creator of the TVA is He Who Remains, who settled at the Citadel of the End of Time after the Multiversal War while the Time-Keepers are in reality just mindless androids who serve as puppet rulers. Since then, he controlled the organization without the members knowing. He Who Remains created the TVA to prevent the return of his own Variants who were the cause of the last Multiversal War. Most members of the TVA also are unaware that many of the kidnapped Variants are brainwashed to serve the organization, with every one at the TVA being versions of people that exist on the Sacred Timeline.
The TVA works erasing branched timelines and capturing the Variants which caused the branches. If not brainwashed, the captured Variants are usually pruned and sent to a void at the end of time. Similarly, the pruned realities are also disintegrated and its matter sent to the Void, to prevent growing branches on the Sacred Timeline.
At some point, The Variance Authority were sent to arrest Sylvie, because she somehow created a branched timeline despite that she barely did anything besides play with her toys, and sent her to the TVA until she escaped.
Loki[]
Arresting Loki[]
During an alternate timeline of 2012, Loki was able to acquire access to the Tesseract and escaped, bringing him to Gobi Desert in Mongolia.
This caused his timeline to branch, so a TVA unit lead by Hunter B-15 immediately arrives and apprehended him for disrupting the Sacred Timeline. Loki was brought into the TVA Office and goes through a Variant process before being brought into a courtroom to stand in front of TVA Judge Ravonna Renslayer. She asks Loki if he is guilty or not, to which he denied of doing any crimes against the timeline.
Loki tries to use his powers, before he is told that magic doesn't work in the TVA. Ravonna sentences Loki to be reset, before he is saved by a TVA analyst called Mobius, who convinces Ravonna to use Loki as a way to find a fugitive variant of Loki.
Deadpool & Wolverine[]
Wade Wilson was abducted by a squad of soldiers who took him to the TVA; he was met by a middle manager called Paradox. Wade was convinced to join the TVA, a deal sweetened by them providing a new suit and enhanced weaponry, such as katannas made from adamantium. When Deadpool began to discuss scheduling concerns, Paradox dismissed it by noting that his universe was doomed; Paradox explained the concept of an Anchor Being, who was an individual of such pivotal importance that when they die, their universe would also die. While the Anchor Being's universe wouldn't die until a few millennia, Paradox declared that he didn't want to wait for the end, so to advance the death of the universe, he had a machine named a Time Ripper created, which when completed was capable of erasing timelines.
Deadpool broke Paradox's nose to steal his TemPad, using it to portal to Logan's grave; Deadpool believed that Logan had a healing factor like his own, and as such thinking death wasn't possible. However, Logan was thoroughly dead, as after exhuming the grave, Deadpool merely found the adamantium skeleton; Paradox sent a squad to take down Deadpool, but he used the skeleton and its pieces to slaughter the squad. Deadpool explored the multiverse to find a replacement Wolverine to act as his reality's new Anchor Being; he eventually settled on one, who passed out from drinking too much whiskey.
Deadpool returned to the TVA, dragging an unconscious Wolverine; Paradox was incredulous at the return. Deadpool claimed that he found a new Wolverine, so if he could talk to the superiors, they can correct the mishap; however, Paradox's reaction made Deadpool realise that the TVA higher ups hadn't given permission for Paradox to enact his Time Ripper plan. In response, Paradox used a Time Stick to prune both Deadpool and Wolverine, sending them to a reality outside all existence where pruned variants and dead worlds are sent, the Void.
Cassandra Nova, who was sent to the Void as a child, but her immense powers and psychopathy made her content to remain in the realm as a dictator, had been for years in contact with Paradox; he had made a deal with her to inform her about the whereabouts of new banished people sent to the Void. Deadpool and Wolverine manage to elude her forces; after this, one of Nova's followers, Pyro, received communication from Paradox, revealing that the TVA agent had also made a deal with him behind Nova's back.
The surviving Legacies are recruited by Deadpool and Wolverine to siege Nova's base, with the goal of getting Juggernaut's helmet over her head to nullify her psychic powers, thereby forcing her into agreeing to sending the anti-hero duo back into Deadpool's universe. The duo are successfully returned to Deadpool's universe, and they head towards a TVA outpost near Wade's apartment to stop the Time Ripper. Paradox halted them, chiding them for returning and condemning their actions as pointless. However, Nova herself arrived in the universe, after reading Pyro's mind, she learned of Paradox's duplicity, but also the Time Ripper, which she intended to use to wipe out the multiverse, leaving the Void as the only reality, thus making her God.
While Deadpool and Wade are telekinetically thrown down the street, Nova phase shifted her hand into Paradox's head to torture him and read his mind to learn how to use the Time Ripper. Despite her animosity, Nova's hubris made her leave Paradox alive. When Deadpool and Wolverine overcome the Deadpool Corps due to effort, but ultimately Deadpool's friend Peter - a multiversal constant that the other Deadpools would rather talk to than follow a contract - the duo meet Paradox, who lamented that it was hopeless because Nova had already accessed the Time Ripper. Nevertheless, they insist that Paradox think of a solution, which after a momentary contemplation, he revealed that if a conduit is established in the Ripper's power source, the machine would be destroyed instead of the timeline, but the person who does it would be erased.
Nova was able to begin destabilisation of Deadpool's universe, yet he and Wolverine are able to make the conduit, which obliterated the Time Ripper and seemingly Nova herself; the universe was restored to its normal integrity. Another squad of TVA troops, led by Hunter B-15, arrive to inspect the site; as Deadpool and Wolverine return alive, they realise Paradox had lied about their deaths and hid his culpability in the near-erasure of the multiverse. Hunter B-15 was briefly distracted by flirting with Peter, but she regained focus enough to take Paradox into custody, and had her troops escort him back to the TVA to face consequences for his disastrous and genocidal judgement.

Trivia[]
- In the comics, the Time Variance Authority is an organization that was formed to monitor realities throughout the multiverse and to keep temporal interference to a minimum.
- According to Loki composer Natalie Holt, the theme of the TVA heard throughout the series ("TVA") was written for Kang the Conqueror. This hints towards Kang's takeover of the agency at the end of the first season.
