Titans, also known as Mutants, are a hostile species featured in the Crash Bandicoot video game series, serving as the main enemy faction in Crash of the Titans and its sequel Crash: Mind Over Mutant. They are gigantic hybrid monsters created by Dr. Neo Cortex through Uka Uka's Mojo Mutation to serve as his army.
Biography[]
Uka Uka taught Neo Cortex the process of Mojo Mutation, and the evil scientist used it to create Titans to serve as his enforcers during his scheme to build the Doominator and destroy Wumpa Island. Uka Uka's corrupting and evil Mojo, however, drives the mutant animals insane and out of control.
Crash of the Titans (console version)[]
Crash Bandicoot and Aku Aku first encounter a titan, namely Spike, while chasing after Cortex who had kidnapped Coco. Crash stunned the Spike and used Aku Aku to "jack" it, putting the titan under his control. Once the heroes reached the Mojo temple, witnessing Cortex sucking Mojo out of it, the evil genius revealed the origin of the titans and his plan to them before deploying a Yuktopus to fight them. Crash took control of the beast and used it to force Cortex into retreat.
Crash would encounter more titans on his way to Tiny Tiger's volcano lair, and used a Shellephant to chase the villain down and corner him.
At the Uka Tree, Uka Uka used an upgraded Evolvo-Ray to turn himself into a titan and fight Crash, but the bandicoot destroyed his titan body.
In the head of Doominator, Nina Cortex attempted to kill Crash personally using Arachnina, but Crash defeated her and her robot.
Crash: Mind Over Mutant[]
It appears that after Nina's defeat, the titans were left behind and started lives and even civilizations of their own, free of the villains' influence, although some of them, notably Stenches and Grimlies, would continue to serve Cortex. After Cortex and Dr. Nitrus Brio distributed the latter's NVs all over Wumpa Island, a huge number of titans became brainwashed by them, becoming the doctor's slaves once again. Three Titan Heroes would also steal Uka Uka's voodoo bones while he was imprisoned by Cortex, with Crash stealing them back. It's presumed that after Cortex's defeat all NV-controlled titans broke free.
Behavior[]
In their first appearance, the titans featured animalistic behavior, only communicating through roars, but nevertheless appeared to possess some sort of sentience. In Mind Over Mutant, they were revealed to be intelligent enough to build functioning societies, with the titans not under NV control acting friendly when talking to Crash. It also appears they completely left behind their animosity with the mutant bandicoot, as unlike the first game, where a "jacked" titan would drop on the ground and vanish if Crash left them alone for some time, they will instead salute him before despawning, possibly out of gratitude for freeing them from brainwashing.
In the Nintendo DS version of Crash of the Titans, enemy titans act no different from other mutant animals, speaking in full sentences.
Trivia[]
- Curiously, when titans wear NVs, they are not shown on their character model, but they still possess an altered color palette and red eyes to show that they are brainwashed.
