~ Tobias bonding with Hannibal Lecter over murder |
Tobias Budge is a major antagonist in Season 1 of the TV series Hannibal. He is a musician and serial killer who attempts to create a new sound by using his victims' vocal chords as the strings of a his "instrument", which is also made from his victims' flesh.
He was portrayed by Demore Barnes, who also portrayed the first vessel of Raphael in Supernatural, Henry Hewitt/Tokamak in The Flash, and William Wintergreen in Titans.
Biography[]
Tobias is first seen attending an opera performance with his friend (and implied lover) Franklyn. After the show, Franklyn introduces him to his psychiatrist, Hannibal Lecter. Tobias then begins plotting to kill Lecter, but changes his mind after witnessing Lecter commit a murder.
When a trombone player for the local orchestra is found murdered, FBI profiler Will Graham is called in to investigate it. The victim had been cut open at the throat and had his vocal chords treated with chemicals to be capable of being played like a string instrument. Graham comes to the conclusion that the murderer had killed before, but never in the same manner as the victim they found. He believes that the killer wants to "create a new sound".
Later, Franklyn informs Lecter that Tobias has been saying strange things that describe the recent murder in almost perfect detail. Intrigued, Lecter persuades Franklyn not to inform the police about Tobias so he can investigate personally.
Lecter then visits Tobias at his string shop, and invites him to dinner. Over dinner, Tobias admits that he had killed the trombone player. Tobias then tells Lecter that he knows the doctor is himself a murderer. He offers to be Lecter's "partner", but Lecter refuses. He then flees dinner when the doorbell rings, which happens to be Graham coming to visit Lecter. During this visit, Lecter informs Graham of Franklyn's suspicions.
Graham and two Baltimore police officers then pay a visit to Tobias at his shop, where he is showing his student out the door. Tobias starts asking about the investigation, but Graham becomes distracted and leaves the shop when he hears the sound of an injured animal outside. When he returns, he finds one of the officers dead with a rebar pipe stabbed through his throat. He then finds Tobias' lab in the basement, where he chemically treats the guts of his victims to be playable. He finds the other officer dead, and Tobias attacks him. He manages to shoot Tobias in the ear before he escapes.
An injured Tobias then interrupts Franklyn's session with Lecter. Franklyn tries to talk Tobias down, but Lecter kills him; this angers Tobias, who wanted to kill Franklyn himself. The two then engage in brutal hand-to-hand combat, which ends with Lecter breaking Tobias' arm and killing him by hitting him in the back of the head with a heavy metal statue. When the police arrive, Lecter says that Tobias killed Franklyn to steer suspicion away from himself.
