Dance for me, jester, dance!! Faster jester, faster!!
~ Tobias forcing Gumball to dance around.

Tobias Wilson is a major character in Cartoon Network's The Amazing World of Gumball franchise.

He is a fluffy and athletic multicolored "jock" who attends Elmore Jr. High alongside main characters Gumball and Darwin Watterson. He is also the son of Harold and Jackie Wilson, and brother of Rachel Wilson.

Tobias is an on/off arch-rival of Gumball's, usually stemming from Tobias' jealousy of Gumball's attention and misadventures, and his own arrogance. As such, he serves as an antagonist in several episodes.

He is voiced by Rupert Degas (season 1) and Hugo Harold-Harrison (season 2 onwards); the latter voices Miss Simian in the same show.

Appearance[]

Tobias is a short, cloud-shaped humanoid with a smooth gradient of orange, red, and blue colors. His lips are large and bright blue, and he has big white eyes with black pupils. He has a somewhat scrawny physique despite his claims to the contrary. He wears a green-and-white striped headband, green wristbands, and red shoes with white soles and white socks.

Personality[]

While Tobias is often genuinely friendly and empathetic, his defining trait is his massive ego (much like Gumball). He believes that he is a heavily built jock, but in reality he isn't at all. He also arrogantly boasts about his family's wealth and thinks he's much cooler and more entitled to attention than he actually is; he is occasionally jealous of the attention Gumball receives. Tobias also displays a lack of respect towards the female students as something of a womanizer, and will make slimy (rejected) advances on them due to his overconfidence.

Tobias' pride, immaturity, and selfish behavior often motivates his antagonistic roles against Gumball and Darwin. However, his crimes generally amount to rivalry and mischief, and he is not truly malicious.

Villainous Roles[]

The Amazing World of Gumball[]

In "The Third", Tobias has his first role as the main antagonist. He makes Gumball pay 10 bucks to ensure his and Darwin's friendship when the two are "bored" of each other. However, Darwin ends up favoring Tobias more than Gumball and effectively steals him away. This leads to Gumball eventually confronting Tobias at his house and winning back his adoptive brother.

In "The Quest", Tobias tosses around Anais's Daisy the Donkey doll, and when Gumball tells Tobias to give Anais's doll back, he intentionally drops the doll off the bus, causing Gumball, Darwin, and Anais to try and find the doll and get it back from Tina Rex.

In "The Pressure", Tobias serves as the secondary antagonist. When Darwin is pressured by Masami Yoshida into a relationship and Gumball fawns over Penny Fitzgerald, Tobias and Banana Joe insist upon "pals before gals." He later helps Joe cut down the Treehouse Girls' tree while it is populated and both Gumball and Darwin are about to kiss their respective girlfriends, causing it to topple to the ground.

In "The Knights," Tobias has his second role as the main antagonist. He dresses up like a minstrel and fights Gumball for Penny's affection and partnership in their medieval-themed school assignment, even though Penny has no interest in him. He confronts Gumball and Penny at the former's house and insists upon a "duel" between him and Gumball where they eventually start fighting using brooms as swords. Near the end of the fight, Tobias flings Penny off to the side of the road toward her dad's car. Noticing this, Gumball pushes Tobias out of the way and then pushes Penny out of the way of Mr. Fitzgerald's car, which inadvertently causes Mr. Fitzgerald to swerve right toward the Watterson's house and hit Tobias with his car's right rear-view mirror before crashing into the Watterson's house. Tobias, in a state of shock, surrenders quickly and declares Gumball the winner before he runs away from the incident.

In "The Mothers," Tobias has his third role as the main antagonist (one of two; alongside his mother Jackie). He, along with Gumball, Darwin, and Banana Joe, puts their mothers through various tests (without their knowledge) to see who is the "Superest Mom." It is revealed that Tobias secretly told Jackie about it as an attempt to cheat, thus mitigating the difficulty of all her tasks as she prepares for them beforehand. Gumball then discovers that Tobias and his mother cheated on the hot sauce challenge by replacing the hot sauce with ketchup. Unanimously, the boys disqualify him, making Nicole the winner as Banana Barbara lost all but one of the challenges. Later on, after Nicole rescues her sons from a height, Tobias gives his card to his mom, but rips it apart and gives her a disappointed glare due to her failure.

In "The Points", Tobias has his fourth role as the main antagonist. He tricks Gumball and Darwin into giving him "invisible points" in exchange for doing his chores, for which he is typically rewarded with money to spend on the game from his parents. Gumball and Darwin eventually realize that this was a scam. They confront Tobias, but he begins attacking them with imaginary laser weapons that he "bought" in the game; it all takes place in the boys' heads. Eventually, Tobias's dad Harold stops them and states that Tobias's gaming account was closed because he owed $10,000 in microtransactions. He also notices that Gumball and Darwin's attempts at completing "chores" were incompetent and set the house on fire.

In "The Test", Tobias has his fifth role as the main antagonist. He replaces Gumball as the main character of the show as Gumball attempts to bottle up his "loser protagonist" qualities. It transforms into a cliché sitcom where Tobias effectively steals Gumball's life and role. In the end, Gumball vomits his "venom" (suppressed toxicity) at Tobias' face, completely burning it off and thus reclaiming his status as series anti-hero.

In "The One," Tobias has his sixth role as the main antagonist. He tries to become Gumball's best friend due to insecurity, first bothering him, and then "murders" Gumball's close friends; Leslie, Bobert 6B, Banana Joe, Sarah and Carrie in various brutal and evil ways due to deducing that if there is no one left, he is automatically the best friend. He also steals their powers and tries to kill Darwin in a final bid. However, thankfully it was all just Tobias imagining that it was real. Gumball calls him out and explains that Tobias is fine as a "good friend" instead of a "best friend" and seems to set him straight.

He becomes a major antagonist in the series finale, "The Inquisition." Rob turns him, like many other students, into humans and orders them to capture Gumball and Darwin. Ultimately, Gumball and Darwin restore him to his normal form.

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball[]

In the episode "The Astrological," he takes on a second role as the secondary antagonist. In this episode, Mr. Small predicts that Gumball and Penny will break up and that they love Penny and Tobias. Throughout the episode, Tobias tries to look after Penny until she rejects him at the end.

Tobias takes role a major antagonist in the episode "The App." He is one of the people infected with Click-Sap when the parents of teenagers visit the app and film their videos. Tobias, along with the others, deletes it.

He appears as the overarching antagonist of the episode "The Entrance." He invites all of his classmates to his party in order to win the love of the girls, including Penny and Kerry. When Gumball and Darwin arrive at his house, Tobias calls the police, believing that the party has been disrupted by the Waterson family. At the end of the episode, Tobias becomes desperate because no one has come to his party. However, a girl arrives, who turns out to be a disguised criminal, and he and his gang rob Tobias's house.

Trivia[]

  • Tobias is named after Tobi Wilson, one of the show's writers.[1]
  • Tobias has the joint fourth most major roles for a non-Watterson character; next to Mr. Robinson, Rob, and Penny. Tobias has a total of seven (the same as Carrie).
    • He's also the first non-Watterson to have a major role ("The Third").
  • The only girls in his class that Tobias has never hit on are Sussie, Molly, Tina, and Jamie.
