~ Todd preparing to beat Alice. |
Todd Williams is a major antagonist in the 2018 interactive thriller video game Detroit: Become Human, serving as the main antagonist of both chapters of Kara's Story "A New Home" and "Stormy Night", and a possible antagonist in the final chapter "Battle for Detroit", and also a minor antagonist of Connor's story from the chapter ''Waiting For Hank''.
He is the extremely abusive father of a little girl named Alice, and the owner of the android Kara. However, after seeing the abuse, Kara decided to fight back, take Alice, and escape Todd's household.
He was portrayed by Dominic Gould in the English version while he was portrayed by Miguel Ángel Ghigliazza Solares in the Latin Spanish dub of the game.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Not much is known about Todd's childhood, although it can be presumed that his parents may have been somewhat abusive to him. Todd was once a successful taxi driver and family man, but his life took a turn for the worse in his 30's, when his job was taken by androids. He then took to working in labor, and later as a bouncer, but androids took to replacing people in those vocations as well. Todd's wife also left him, taking their daughter with her, presumably because of him using the highly addictive drug Red Ice. He subsequently bought an android child, Alice, and a household android, Kara, treating them as if they were his original daughter and wife.
Detroit: Become Human[]
Having been destroyed multiple times before the game even begins, Kara was repaired, but lost her memory. She returns to Todd, who strictly tells Kara to clean the house, already having a seemingly angry personality. While she's washing the dishes, Todd will suddenly yell at Kara while watching an ice hockey game to bring him a beer. He starts smoking a bunch of red ice, and if the player makes it so that Kara finds Todd's red ice, he will viciously grab her by the throat and tell her not to "touch his stuff".
Todd's first possible death happens in chapter two, "Stormy Night". Todd will throw a sudden temper tantrum on Alice, and tell her that everything is her fault. It's possible to leave Todd alive, and cause him to apologize, but he will still try to stop Kara and Alice from escaping. However, it is possible to kill Todd in this chapter, as Kara finds a gun in one of Todd's drawers, which she may use in self-defense. The opposite can happen as well; Todd can kill both Alice or Kara depending on the player's choices, although this is extremely uncommon among players.
If Todd does not die, he has multiple cameos throughout the game. One such example is when he shows up in Connor's story, during the chapter "Waiting for Hank...", where he tells the police station about Kara attacking him, wanting to get her arrested. Connor himself cannot actually interact with Todd.
If Kara and Alice stay in a motel and leave Todd alive, he reappears in "On the Run", where he is interviewed on a television news channel. He tells them that Kara attacked him "for no reason" and about Alice disappearing, overall stating that he dislikes how the evolution of androids is going.
If Todd isn't killed in "Stormy Night", he makes one last (optional) appearance in the final chapter "Battle for Detroit" where Kara and Alice run into him at the bus terminal. If Kara doesn't find the pictures of Todd's old family (or simply not mention them), Todd will tell the U.S. soldiers that Kara is an android, which will cause them to execute her. If Luther is still alive, he will protect Kara and Alice from the soldiers. However, if Kara does find the pictures of Todd and his family in "Stormy Night", she will tell him about his backstory, which will make him resentful, and he will hug and apologize to Alice. If this happens, Todd will leave the androids alone and wish them good luck.

Trivia[]
- Dominic Gould is the voice actor for Todd and his likeness is used for him. Gould also voiced and used his likeness for Earl in another Quantic Dream game Beyond Two Souls who is a criminal and a rapist. David Cage, the president of Quantic Dream and director of the games mostly makes Gould play characters who are evil and ironically Connor's actor Bryan Dechart says that Gould is a very nice person. Gould even said that he doesn't understand why Cage sees an "evil streak" in him.
- Based on the flowchart's global statistics, most players would choose to have Kara kill Todd rather than letting him live. But due to his backstory, this is considered a mercy-killing in putting Todd out of his misery after being separated from his actual family for so long.
- The Latin Spanish voice of Todd, Miguel Ángel Ghigliazza Solares disappeared on July 2022 and they found him dead on December of the same year, he died like Todd (determinant).
