Why are you guys so desperate when it comes to something so useless? Won't you regret it once you're adults? | „ |
| ~ Tohru Adachi when cornered in Magatsu Inaba. |

| ~ Tohru Adachi while toying with Yu. |
Tohru Adachi is the main antagonist of the Persona 4 sub-series within the Persona series.
A police detective who keeps up the appearance of being incompetent and friendly, he is in reality the culprit behind the murders plaguing Inaba, has almost no regard for human life and will go to any lengths simply to amuse himself. He also serves as the archenemy of the Investigation Team (especially to Yu Narukami and Yosuke Hanamura).
He was voiced by Mitsuaki Madono in Japanese and Johnny Yong Bosch in English.
Appearance[]
Adachi is a young adult with black bed hair and grey eyes. He wears a black suit with a white long-sleeved shirt inside, a crooked red tie and brown field boots.
In Persona 4 The Animation he had darker blackish brown hair.
Personality[]
A seemingly cheerful and jovial detective, Adachi often serves as the story's comic relief. He jokingly refers to himself as the 'slave' of Dojima, complaining of the workload that his partner piles on him. Adachi also often accidentally blurts out the police investigation results to the Investigation Team, much to his own chagrin. He can be seen hanging around Junes Department Store, usually planning to buy cabbages to cook for dinner. His actions in public hide his normal thoughts and desires however...
It turns out that he is the one behind the mysterious murders of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi. Once the truth is revealed, he shows his true colors as a sadistic and manipulative man, seeking to have fun. He already knew how dangerous The world inside the TV was, and threw Yamano into it anyway. He manipulated Taro Namatame into "saving" the next victim before the murderer could get to her, all while hiding the truth that he was behind the first two cases. He even said that he got a real kick out of it when he threw that "Kubo kid" into the TV. He acts as if everything was a game, and watched the events unfold. He doesn't seem to care about the consequence of his actions. He also believes that there was nothing great about the real world. It was just "dull and annoying as hell" to him. Adachi is also hinted to be abusive towards women, as seen when he usually continuously calls Ms. Yamano and Saki by insulting nicknames, and his treatment of them when throwing into the TV World.
By the time of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, he remains the same but is different from how he was before in terms of goals and actions. Adachi does not want to end the world or continue his plans since he lost and accepts it. He holds sympathy for Sho Minazuki and says that he still have an opportunity of living a peaceful life, Adachi goes on to state that he is much worse when compared to Sho. Despite his attitude, the impact from the investigation team effected him greatly and shown selflessness when helping Yu defeat Sho and Hinokagutsuchi. Though he does not admit it, he does value his relationship with Yu, Nanako, and Dojima. Adachi even admits that he regrets throwing his relationship away and understands that having bonds with others isn't as bad than how he thought.

Trivia[]
- His style in summoning Persona is clutching his head in pain, similar to Takaya Sakaki from Persona 3. The difference is that Adachi's eyes are vacant like a madman while invoking, while Takaya's eyes are normal (although he drops to his knees from the pain).
- In episode seven of Persona 4 The Golden Animation however, he summons his Persona in a similar way to Yu, except he uses his left hand, akin to works portraying villains sometimes being left-handed.
- When Yu confronts Adachi in Persona 4: The Animation, he calls out his Persona's name. This is the only time he says the name of his Persona.
- Adachi appears to be based on the real-life serial killer Ted Bundy, due to the fact that that they both took advantage of their looks to lure victims.
- Adachi is very popular in some circles being used as a meme character. This is due to Adachi's strange personality, Dojima berating him, the funny faces that he tends to make, and him saying bitches and whores.
- His meme status is so big that it got the attention of Atlus and they included his funny faces quirk in Persona 4: Arena Ultimax.
- Fans commonly ship Adachi with Sae Niijima from Persona 5 as a popular crack ship.
- There are some hints that Adachi is the killer Yu and co. hunted down all along:
- Implication of Mayumi Yamano and Saki Konishi to be the killer's associate one way or another, which proven to be the case; Naoto stated that Adachi was supposedly in charge of guarding the former in the light of the scandal between her, Namatame and Misuzu while the latter being the one who found the former's body.
- The police's inability to pinpoint a possible suspect or two of Saki's murder, which didn't help by the lack of suspicious individuals at Inaba during the investigation. Not surprisingly, this means the culprit was not only unassuming enough to be easily overlooked, but also part of authorities involved in said investigation thus able to dispose incriminating evidences against them on ease.
- This point is related to Namatame's testimony to Yu and co. where he attempted to warn the police about the killer targeted Saki next after discovering their modus operandi (targeting anyone who appeared in Midnight Channel) only for them not believing him thus attempting to take matters with his own ends, unaware that this was exactly what the killer wanted.
- This one is probably more on the nose, but unlike Dojima, Adachi had tougher luck in doing his part in the investigation.
- The killer was no doubt someone Yu and Dojima family knew very well, even frequently visited their home thus able to both monitor Yu's movements and send threatening letters to him on ease. Strangers would have tougher time to do the same considering Nanako vigilant enough not to open the door to them. Although Namatame managed to catch her off-guard due to being an unassuming deliveryman, it must be stressed that he learned Dojima family's address shortly before kidnapping her and never known Yu and co. beforehand.
- Judging from how Saki and Mayumi died (thrown into TV World and let Shadows there doing the rest leading to their lifeless bodies appeared at high places in Inaba), the killer must've awakened their Persona prior to/around the same time as Yu did somehow. The killer also should've at least of a certain height and weight to possess sufficient brute force to quickly send things around 50 kg into a TV and able to do so quickly. Since Naoto confirmed the culprit to be adult instead of teenagers like her, this ruled out Yu and co. as well as Mitsuo Kubo and Teddie/Kuma.
- All killings carried out by the culprit themselves occured prior to April 15th, with subsequent attempts carried out by their pawn Namatame. Upon being questioned by Yu and co. Namatame claimed the first person he kidnapped was Yukiko.
- Some of Adachi's behavior and activities were more suspicious than they seemed to be;
- He is often encountered at Junes for some reasons. Taking into account of the store being where Yu and co. discreetly entered TV World via. large televisions sold there, chance were the group was sloppy enough for Adachi to notice their activities at one point leading to him hanging out there more often to spy on them ever since.
- Adachi was unusually eager to catch Rise's stalker under assumption of him being possible suspect when she disappeared.
- It occured to Naoto that Adachi was unusually relieved when she came across the list of would-be victims who disappeared but were never disclosed to the public — many of which those who joined Yu and co. in investigating the murder case — in Namatame's diary, stating, "Wow, then that settles it." At the time, she and the rest of the police weren't certain those individuals were meant to perish like Mayumi and Saki did as the true killer intended. It was after hearing Namatame's testimony and pointing this out right at Adachi's face which further revealed that he was the mastermind all along.
- When Nanako was seemingly dying leading to Yu and co. angrily confronted Namatame, Adachi was unusually lax in the latter's security during such turn of events, even letting them to enter the alleged suspect's room. Not surprisingly, he was hoping the group disposing his now useless pawn.
