To me, toys and nourishment are equal. A life lived simply eating for survival is nothing better than forever dying, is it not? In that case, if they will die either way, then isn’t the healthy and correct way to live toying with them as much as possible before killing them?
~ Tokinada's view on life.
If the world is duplicitous, then I should be duplicitous as well. The Tsunayashiro family, which exists for nothing more than the sake of being despicable, ends here. What meaning is there in an evil that exists only to be looked down upon and despised? It was all a fraud. What I am to do if I am unable to go along with the lie? Ahh, I will sing to the tune of my passions as my heart desires. I may be destroyed by Quincies, squashed by the Hollows, or sabotaged by my own hubris. If the final days of Soul Society are upon us, then I vow to bring about evil until that day. There will be no necessary evils. My malice will be entirely needless as I laugh at this world! What a joyous day! The Soul Society's history has validated that my malice is just!
~ Tokinada upon learning the truth of Soul Society's dark history.

Tokinada Tsunayashiro is the main antagonist of the light novel series, Bleach: Can't Fear Your Own World. He is the Head of the Tsunayashiro Clan, who desires to overthrow the Soul King and plunge the world into pure chaos.

He is also the husband of Kaname Tōsen's close friend, Kakyō, who he ended up murdering, as well as the one that pressured Jushirō Ukitake into giving Kūgo Ginjō the Substitute Shinigami badge, in order to keep surveillance on the Fullbringers and have them be assassinated. His actions are ultimately the reason why Tōsen and Ginjō betrayed the Soul Society.

He is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in Bleach: Brave Souls, who also voiced Orsted in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, Kai Chisaki in My Hero Academia, and Isshiki Ōtsutsuki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Personality[]

Tokinada is a cruel, manipulative sociopath, who harbors a strong desire to make people suffer and watch the world tear itself apart. Learning the Original Sin of Soul Society has led him to embrace a path that allows him to be as vile and evil as he possibly could. Combined with his noble status, he believes he is entitled to do wrong without facing any real punishment for his actions.

He holds no true attachment to those around him, including those that serve him loyally, such as Hikone, viewing them as only a means to an end. He stays true to his nihilistic views and beliefs strongly that he is all the more willing to throw his own life away if it means seeing his plans come to fruition.

History[]

Background[]

When he was a young boy, Tokinada had approached to his father and asked him what the Soul King is, in which his father explained to him that the Soul King was the linchpin of their world and if he were to disappear, it would bring about the collapsation of all three worlds immediately. Tokinada then asked him what was the world like before the Soul King, in which his father scold him, saying there was no world prior to the Soul King and that the Shinigami should be grateful for his existence. Tokinada could sense there was more to the story than what his father led him to believe, but chose to leave it be for the time begin.

As time went by, Tokinada eventually came across cipher texts that documented the truth behind Soul Society's history. From here, he learned about the evil sins that his family committed and was greatly pleased. Knowing that the Soul Society was built from nothing but lies and deceit, Tokinada decided that every action he would take would be nothing but pure malice and evil, until the very final days of Soul Society.

Later down the line after his wife's funeral, Tokinada had approached Kaname Tōsen who attempted to make audience with Central 46, demanding to know why Kakyō's murderer was not punished for his crime. Posing himself as a colleague of hers, Tokinada offered to talk with him elsewhere. Upon getting to know more about Tōsen, Tokinada told him that the person who murdered her was her husband and when Tōsen asked why he would do such a thing, Tokinada insisted it was likely due to her sense of justice and peace that brought her demise.

Tokinada then reveals that her husband was a member of one of the Five Great Noble Clans and his status as a noble led him to not be severely punished. Tōsen was naturally upset about this, stating that Shnigami's duty should be about maintaining peace, in which Tokinada tells him that peace was indeed maintained, but only in regards for the noble clans. Tokinada then asks would he seek out revenge if he were given the opportunity, stating doing so would go against her wishes. Though he was very conflicted about it, Tōsen agreed not to seek revenge if it meant respecting her wishes for peace and justice. Thanking him for clearing his mind, Tōsen then asked him what his name was, in which Tokinada properly introduced himself by his full name.

Upon hearing this immediately had Tōsen shook, in which Tokinada tells him he did not mishear or misunderstood him. Seeing that Tōsen was still taken aback, Tokinada reintroduced himself as his close friend's nemesis and expressed his relief to hear that Tōsen did not want to seek out revenge, stating it's much more terrifying to be hated by a "Rukongai urchin" with nothing to lose than by another aristocrat who thinks twice about how to protect themselves. Tokinada then tells him he would have killed him otherwise, saying he won't get in trouble no matter how many Rukonagai inhabitants he kills.

As Tokinada then prepares to leave, Tōsen grabs him with fury. Tokinada noted his anger and asked why did he rage so, only to violently subdue him with his zanpakutō and state that Kakyō would have forgiven him for his action. He then tells him for that very reason, he should forgive him as well and to let go of his hatred, reminding him that's what Kakyō would have wanted for him to do. Tokinada then called for the guards that heard Tōsen's shouts, telling them he tried to raise his hand against him and requested for him to be taken away. As the guards prepare to take Tōsen away, Tokinada reveals to him that he did not lie about anything in their previous chat, as he genuinely believed the world was strange for not letting him be punished for his crime and that Kakyō did indeed have noble dreams, only that he found them to be loathsomely sickening.

TokinadaHikone

Having woken up from his dream, Tokinada was greeted by his cheerful retainer, Hikone Ubuginu, who was eager to know what Tokinada was dreaming about. Tokinada tells them he had a pleasant dream, one where he witnessed the endless despair of a broken person and expressed his satisfaction that he would never get tired seeing such a sight. He then turned his attention to the corpse pile of Onmitsukidō assassins that were sent to kill his family. As he found one survivor amongst the pile, Tokinada proceeded to torture him and reveal to him that he was the one who ordered the assassination on his family, in order to for him to garner sympathy and to eliminate any rivals, allowing him to become the new head of his family.

After murdering the remaining survivors, Hikone asked if they should start addressing Tokinada as Lord Tsunayashiro, since he was to become the new head of the clan, but Tokinada insisted it was not necessary as Hikone was planned to be the new Soul King and so they should treat each others as equals. Afterwards, news about Tokinada's position as the new head of the Tsunayashiro Clan was published throughout Soul Society.

Tokinada later met with Shunsui Kyōraku at the First Division Barracks. Shunsui was surprised to see him, stating he last saw him several hundred years ago when he was supposedly under house arrest for murdering his wife, but Tokinada dismissed that as a foolish story from the previous head of his family and instead of punishing the criminal for his crime, he allowed him to take everything away from them. Shunsui asked if this meant he was confessing to his crime of killing his predecessor, but Tokinada denied it and insisted that even if that were the case, he would easily get away with it. Shunsui pointed out to him that the members of the Central 46 have changed over the years and are not like the ones in the past to make that happen, but Tokinada then pointed out most of the aristocrats still remain relatively unchanged and those that have changed are him, Byakuya Kuchiki and Yoruichi Shihōin, based on their experiences in combat.

Tokinada admits that he himself has not changed since and still holds a grudge against Shunsui for exposing him, in which Shunsui tells him he is mistaken to direct his grudge at him as he was trying to prevent him from committing a crime. Shunsui then asked for his pardon on suspecting him for being involved in Rukia's execution, much to Tokinada's surprise as he states that he had no reason to do such a thing, let alone not having met her. Shunsui suggested the possibility that he could have done something secretly through his family, but Tokinada again reaffirmed that was not the case. Shunsui then tells him he does things without reasoning, only for the sole purpose of making people upset, in which Tokinada told him to stand down but smiled menacingly in doing so.

Shunsui then asked him what his purpose was for meeting with him to begin with, in which Tokinada tells him that he wanted him to get in contact with Yoruichi and Byakuya, wanting to make peace between the noble clans for the sake of both Soul Society, the World of the Living and Hueco Mundo. Shunsui remained very suspicious of him and asked if that was his only reason, in which Tokinada tells him he also wanted to just see his face out of pure resentment. He then suddenly brings up Utikake's death and mocked how glorious it was that he kept the Soul King's arm in his body. Shunsui could tell he was trying to get a reaction out of him and so instead asked him about Kūgo Ginjō, in which Tokinada confirmed he was familiar with him.

Tokinada eventually decided to leave, but not before he spots Nanao Ise at the corner of the room. Tokinada told her that he was not involved in her mother's execution but if he was, he would have made it much like Rukia's execution where it created a sense of a spectacle and urgency, having placed Shunsui in the same situation as Ichigo was when saving Rukia. Tokinada could then sense Shunsui exerting his Reiatsu with a cold presence to it and so decided to take his leave.

CFYOWNobles meeting

Tokinada meets with Yoruichi and Byakuya.

Tokinada later prepares to head off to a meeting but is instead confronted by the same assassins that he had previously sent to kill his own family. Sensing their intent, he unleashes his family's stolen zanpakutō and releases its Shikai state, Kuten-kyōkoku. Having then prepared the meeting room for the Great Noble Clans, Tokinada was then able to meet with Byakuya and Yoruichi, both of which acted as representatives of their respective clans. Having taken the time to introduce himself, Yoruichi asked why he summoned them to this meeting, in which Tokinada reveals that, ever since the war with the Quincies, he seeks to make changes in Soul Society, given how the Royal Guard and the Soul King himself even refuse to take part in any of its conflict.

Byakuya criticized his frivolous behavior, stating he was in no position to renounce the Soul King, in which Tokinada brings up how little he did to prevent Rukia's execution and called his wife foolish for leaving everything in his hands. Yoruichi was angered by this disrespectful behavior of his, but Byakuya did not let it get to him and accepted all of the blame on his part. Tokinada then moved on to discuss his plan of reinstating the Shiba Clan as a member of the Great Noble Clans, so that all of the five families could be whole together again. Byakuya and Yoruichi bring up that the previous head, Isshin Kurosaki, was in exile and none of its current members were interested in assuming the aristocratic status, but Tokinada then suggested that Ichigo's sisters, Yuzu and Karin, could instead serve as the heads in name only.

Yoruichi grew suspicious of this, in which Tokinada then explains that if they were to bring the five clans back together, they will regain the authority that surpasses even the Central 46. Byakuya states that this cannot happen without the Soul King's permission, in which Tokinada acknowledges that to be the case due to the Soul King's incapability, hence wanting the five clans to have all the authority. Tokinada then mentions that, in order for this to happen, he intends to have the Soul King be replaced with someone capable of making their own choices. Tokinada then says to them that very few are aware of the Soul King's true nature, but the one that does is Kisuke Urahara.

Sometime afterwards, Tokinada discovered Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez in the Rukongai, in which he summons Hikone to look into the matter. Eager to be serving their lord once more, Hikone swears not to fail Tokinada again, in which Tokinada tells them that their failure against the Arrancar was something that was guaranteed as a means for them to learn to grow and thus was not disappointed with their performance. As Hikone guarantees Tokinada that they will not fail him again, unlike last time, Tokinada reveals that he planned for Hikone to lose against the Arrancar in Hueco Mundo earler so that the child could learn and grow stronger. Hikone was pleased to hear this and stated they would like to remain on equal terms with their lord once they became the next Soul King, only to be interrupted by Ikomikidomoe, who was baffled at such a notion.

Ikomikidomoe is then silenced by Hikone, who apologizes for his rude presence, though Tokinada reassures them they are not to blame, since Ikomikidomoe has yet to fully accept Hikone as his master and admits that his power is too great for someone like him to compare to. Tokinada then proceeds to give Hikone their orders of attacking Grimmjow and the nearby Fullbringers, and Quincies occupying in the Rukongai. Leaving Hikone to fulfill their task, Tokinada then resumes his plans for Karakura Town, knowing that Ichigo Kurosaki is not there to protect it.

Powers and Abilities[]

Zanpakutō[]

  • Unnamed Zanpakutō: Tokinada originally carried his own Zanpakutō during his servitude in the Gotei 13, before being confiscated. Its Shikai and Bankai abilities remain unknown.
  • Enrakyōten (艶羅鏡典, Law of the Bewitching Lucid Mirror): Tokinada's second Zanpakutō is the family heirloom's Enrakyōten of the Tsunayashiro Clan, which he stole after taking the place as the head of his clan. It grants its user immense power, though at the cost of sacrificing their life.
    • Kuten-kyōkoku (九天鏡谷, Nine Heavens Mirror Valley): Initially, Tokinada used a variant of Enrakyōten by using fake name and command to hide its true abilities. The name he would use is Kuten-kyōkoku and its command would be "Revere" (奉れ, Tatematsure; Viz "Offer"). Doing this allowed Tokinada to reflect back his opponent's attacks towards them.
    • Shikai: The true command of Enrakyōten is "Sip from the four seas, the heavenly shores entwine. Equally duplicate ten thousands, and sharpen" (四海啜りて天涯纏い、万象等しく写し削らん, Shikai susurite tengai matoi, banshō hitoshiku utsushi kezuran; Viz "Sip the world and wear the horizon. Duplicate and curtail... All of creation equally"). It grants Tokinada the ability to copy and mimic any Zanpakutō he has witnessed. The catch here however is that its power varies, depending on the Reiatsu of its user. In Tokinada's possession, he can use the abilities of those he has witnessed in the Gotei 13, in which his mimicked variant of varies in accordance with his Reiatsu level compared to the original wielders of their Zanpakutō.

Abilities[]

  • Immense Spiritual Power: Tokinada's Reiatsu level is noted to be comparable to that of Byakuya Kuchiki and Yoruichi Shihōin, making him a powerful Shingami in his own right. His immense Reiatsu level plays a role in his utilization of Enrakyōten, which correlates with the Zanpakutō abilities that he mimics.
  • Mastery of Kidō: Tokinado is shown to possess capable mastery of Kidō without the need of performing its proper incantation. He can also perform forbidden Kidō spells such as Sentan Hakuja in a similar fashion.
