We won't even have to shoot! Just drop the anchor in view of any settlement, open our missile ports, and they will readily give us everything... Accept our power!
~ Tom's famous quote.

Tom (Russian: Том), also known as the Cat (Russian: Кот), is the tritagonist of Metro Exodus: Sam's Story.

Tom is the de facto leader of Vladivostok's organized criminal gang, colloquially known as Tom's Army. He serves as the superior of Klim, as well as a temporary companion of Samuel Taylor.

He is voiced by Ben Lepley in English and by Valery Storozhik in Russian.

Background[]

Past[]

Tom, an arms dealer from Seattle, Washington, was operating in Russia when the bombs occurred. His organization had a sizeable stockpile of properly assembled pre-war weaponry and ammunition as well as a sizeable number of highly trained mercenaries under the command of his right-hand man Klim put them at a distinct advantage in the post-apocalyptic world.

The "Captain", later known to be Eduard Baranov, who was in command of the city at the time, and a nuclear submarine were hired by Tom when they arrived in Vladivostok to flush out the city's robbers, which they accomplished quite successfully.

Tom, however, soon came into conflict with Baranov, with the latter who is against using the submarine and its nuclear weapons to intimidate surrounding populations into cooperating and restore civilization. Tom became Vladivostok's "de facto" ruler after the Captain left the city following a brief power struggle.

Metro Exodus: Sam's Story[]

In order to convince the Captain to assist him in refueling the submarine, he bargains with Sam when his men seize him. In return, he and his party will sail Sam to San Diego and depart the village to pursue their search for peace.

Sam suggests that if the Captain agrees to refuel the nuclear reactor and show the operation, he and his team will depart Vladivostok and leave the Baranov in command of the colony after speaking with the Captain and sending his message to Tom.

The Captain accepts the agreement but says he doesn't trust Klim because of his harshness and dubious methods for forcing some bandits to work for him. Tom admits that he doesn't trust Klim either, and he vows to get rid of him if the Captain follows through on the bargain.

His fate is dependent on the choice Sam chooses:

  • Should Sam decide not to blow up the U.S.S. Mayflower, he will uphold his end of the deal and bring him back to the United States.
  • Should Sam decide to blow up the nuclear submarine, he, the Captain and the rest of his group presumably perish in the explosion.

Trivia[]

  • Tom's given name and his nickname, "tom cat", are both puns.
  • He is one of the few American characters in the Metro series, alongside Samuel Taylor.
