Thomas Ozward “Tom” Smith, also known as The Easter Ripper, is the main antagonist of the 2023 horror novel Murder House, based on the original video game made by Puppet Combo. A seemingly friendly news cameraman, he is revealed to be a sadistic serial child killer, The Easter Ripper, who kidnapped and murdered many children throughout the years.
Biography[]
Past[]
Not much is known about Tom’s life, however he is shown to have been born and lived in The Smith house, along with his mother and his twin brother Anthony. Tom was known as a “mammas-boy” by Anthony, who constantly got his brother in trouble and was loved by his mother. A flashback shows this as he accuses Anthony of stealing his Halloween candy, with their mother beating Anthony as punishment.
His Serial Murders[]
During an unknown period, he works as the Easter Bunny at various malls, which he uses as a front to kidnap and imprison children in his basement, who he then tortures and murders in various demented ways, claiming over 11 victims, including one infant. He also imprisoned both his mother and Anthony and killed his mom for not wanting to go along with his crimes, although he seemed to have gotten Anthony to help with him. After one of his victims, Randy Martinez, escaped and got help, Tom used his twin Anthony as a fall guy, having him be executed in his place, before he stays low, presumably changing his name and attempting to suppress his urges to kill, although it does not last.
He goes back and one night he stalks a child named Justin in a mall when he accidentally stays overnight, chasing him through until Justin hides deeper inside the mall area. He finds a janitor named Jack and asks for help, and the Janitor locks Justin inside the office room while he goes to get help. It falls on death ears, however, as Easter Ripper later comes and attacks Justin.
After that, he gets a job as a cameraman working for News 9, gaining a friendly co-worker relationship with Emma, who thinks he’s nice, if not a bit dull.
Inside The Murder House[]
When Jerry, The Real Estate Agent, goes inside the house to look around and wait for Gary and the crew, Tom sneaks in and then attacks him, disemboweling the man before placing him inside one of the cellars. He then proceeds to finish the job when Jerry was still alive and place a tarot card in his mouth, leaving him in the bathtub, before he leaves and goes back to the news station.
Tom later comes to the house with the rest of the crew, being Emma, Dana and Gary. The group does their routine of telling the story before Tom mysteriously disappears from the group, as he stages his own death through a video tape as well as slash the tires to the news van to prevent them from escaping.
Murdering Dana and Gary[]
When Dana goes upstairs to the bathroom to fix her makeup, The Easter Ripper attacks her, slicing her face up and an eye coming off. He then proceeds to chase her through the house before he hacks her arm off and when Emma comes upstairs, he proceeds to slice Dana in half with a sickle before chasing her.
He then stalks Gary as he was left alone in the basement by Emma, watching him from the doorway before leaving Gary alone. Once he comes back to the first floor and meets back up with Emma, The Easter Ripper attacks and butchers Gary, disemboweling and slicing him up before he strings him up in the room.
Final Confrontation and Death[]
After giving chase to Emma their confrontation meets at the Greenhouse, and he comes out without his mask, revealing himself to Emma. He taunts and raves to her as he fights her, taking the bullets Emma is firing before he seemingly goes down. However, he pops back up one more time, claiming he is the Easter Ripper and can’t die. However, the ghosts of his victims start surrounding him and eventually swarm him, starting to eat him, with every other victim, including his own mother, eats into his corpse, ending the Easter Ripper in a bright light that ends the book.
Personality[]
Before his reveal, Tom is portrayed as a extremely laid back and friendly, if not dull, individual. He is portrayed as being extremely relaxed individual who strikes up a friendly conversation with Emma, and usually doesn’t get into and arguments with Gary and Dana, although, according to Emma, he frequently doesn’t defend or comfort her too much, and usually just focuses on doing his job well.
However, it is revealed that Tom is a deeply disturbed and sadistic individual, who is fixated on being an completely evil and reviled person by everyone, having no qualms about murdering adults nor children, with children being his main targets, as he killed over 11 children. He is shown to have some sick sense of humor, as after starting a group of kids in his basement, he gives them a basket of chocolate eggs, only to have a favor blade in one of them.
He is as brutal as he is sadistic, using a sickle to brutally slash through Jerry, Dana and Gary, and didn’t hesitate to try and kill Emma in a moment notice. Beyond this, he shows a complete bloodlust that he said he was unable to control, showing to be completely unhinged during his reveal, being completely bombastic, anger ridden and psychotic when trying to kill Emma, all while arrogantly talking about him being unstoppable.
It is shown that Tom was as this even as a child, being petty and entitled and always getting his twin Anthony in trouble and enjoyed his mother’s attention, being frequently called a “mama’s-boy” by Anthony in their childhood. He used this later on, as he imprisons both his mother and twin brother in order to continue his crime spree. Despite claiming he loved his mother, he later admits to murdering her for not wanting to go along with his crime spree, claiming that she didn’t understand him. He later framed his twin for the murders and gets him killed, and despite his claims towards avenging him, Emma confronts him and defies it, saying that Tom killed them all because he liked to, to which Tom doesn’t fight back and admits cheerfully, truly showing that Tom has no morals or love for anyone.
Overall, it is shown and seems obvious to Emma that Tom is an extremely sadistic and pathetic individual, believing himself to be an extremely feared person and loves and seems to hold an obsession over being known as the Easter Ripper, to the point of even being enraged when Emma calls him a loser who wants to pretend to be someone.
Victims of The Easter Ripper[]
- Over 11 Children-During a large amount of time, Tom murdered many children, including one infant, torturing and brutally killing them when kidnapping them, and left the remaining ones abandoned in his house for them to starve and freeze to death. While it was claimed just to be only 11 people, the ending scene pictures more victims killing Tom.
- His Mother-After imprisoning his mother, he killed her after she refused to accept his murders or helped him, claiming she didn’t understand him.
- Anthony Smith (Indirectly)-After imprisoning Anthony, he then frames Anthony for the murders, having their identical looks make it so he was guilty and caused Anthony to be sent to the electric chair.
- Janitor Jack (Possibly)-He is presumably murdered by Tom when he goes off to get the police.
- Justin-Presumably kidnaps and murders the boy offscreen after finding him in the office.
- Jerry, The Real Estate Agent-When Jerry goes into the house before the news van comes over, Tom murders Jerry by disemboweling him, letting him live for a few hours before he finishes him off with a neck slice and leaves him in the bathtub,
- Dana- Ambushed her in the bathroom and slices her face up, getting her eye out of it’s socket and then cuts off her arm, before slicing Dana in half in front of Emma.
- Gary-Chases Gary through the dungeon before he slices Gary through the stomach, disemboweling him before he strings him up in the bedroom.
