~ Professor Weaver at the NWA meeting. |
Professor Tom Weaver is a major antagonist in the 2007 action comedy Hot Fuzz. He is a member of the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance.
He was portrayed by the late Edward Woodward.
Biography[]
Origins[]
He was the liaison between the NWA and the Sandford local police. Due to his obsession with keeping the village pristine in order to win Village of the Year, Weaver installed CCTV cameras all over Sandford to keep an eye on the people, particularly the hoody-wearing teenagers. Recently, Frank Butterman's wife had killed herself out of despair due to Sandford not winning Village of the Year. So, Frank formed the NWA out of the elite elders of the town and decided to take justice into his own hands. In his own words, everybody who broke the law in Sandford would "get their just desserts." Unfortunately, due to Frank's immorality, this meant murder.
Role[]
When overachieving police officer Nicholas Angel is transferred to Sandford by his colleagues, he first meets Weaver during his tour of the local police station. Weaver, sitting in the room from which he watches the security cameras, at first appears harmless but his true colors are hinted at when he reacts with extreme rage at the mention of graffiti. Weaver later appears at a meeting of the NWA, where he rants about an annoying street performer called the Living Statue and asks Nicholas to "come down hard" on him. The town's hoody problem, one of Weaver's pet hates, is also discussed.
Nicholas is initially unconcerned with the NWA's bizarre behavior, until two actors turn up murdered (barely disguised as accidents). Nicholas immediately suspects Simon Skinner, the manager of the local supermarket. So, Nicholas confronts Skinner, but proves nothing, even as several other locals die in seeming "accidents".
Later, Weaver appears as the chairman of the NWA's sinister meeting in the churchyard. Believing Nicholas to have been killed by Lurch Armstrong, he describes how Nicholas will be found dead after having seemingly falling over in the shower, and once again begins ranting about hoodies. Nicholas interrupts him by revealing his survival, at which point Weaver and the others explain their reasons for committing the murders. Nicholas attempts to arrest them all, but is shocked and alarmed when his boss, Frank Butterman, appears, in charge of the committee.
Weaver and the NWA attempt to kill Nicholas, revealing the true horrific nature of their crimes by showing Nicholas decomposing corpses of their victims (including the Living Statue) in the vaults, but Danny, Frank's son and Nicholas' friend, tricks them into thinking he killed Nicholas, escorting Nicholas out of town.
The next day, a vengeful Nicholas returns to Sandford, recruiting the schoolchildren into his private army. The children use spray paint to coat the lenses of Weaver's cameras, preventing Weaver from using them to his advantage. Weaver eventually notices and warns Frank, leading to an enormous shoot out between Nicholas and the NWA.
Following the arrests of the other NWA members, Weaver attacks the police station with a blunderbuss and shoots at Nicholas, hypocritically calling him a "busybody". However, Danny pushes Nicholas out of the way and is hit instead. An enraged Nicholas throws a bin at Weaver, knocking him into the evidence room. Weaver collides with a sea mine (confiscated earlier in the film), which becomes armed. Weaver can only utter a single "Oh God, no..." before the mine detonates, killing him instantly.
Trivia[]
- In the entire film, Weaver is one of the only two members of the NWA to die.
