~ Tommy to Pete Dunham moments before killing him during their final confrontation.
Only a poor little hammer! His face was all battered and torn! He made me feel sick! I hit him with a brick! Now the c-nt's not laughing or singing no more!
~ Tommy's breakdown as he ragefully beats Pete to death.

Tommy Hatcher is the main antagonist of the 2005 action drama film Green Street.

He is a psychopathic and heartless hardman who supports Millwall football club and the ruthless leader of their hooliganism firm called the NGO; henceforth Tommy serves as the sworn enemy of the Green Street Elite, a rival firm that consists of supporters from Millwall's nemesis: West Ham United. During the course of the movie, it becomes clear that Tommy seeks revenge against the GSE and their retired founder Steve Dunham for their previous confrontation a decade ago that inadvertently caused the death of his son.

He was portrayed by Geoff Bell, who also played Dean Baker in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Israel Hands in Treasure Island.

Biography[]

Background[]

Tommy Hatcher grew to become a notorious football hooligan who supported Millwall FC whilst working as a mechanic. Soon enough he became the leader of Millwall's hooligan firm, the NGO, and at one point took his 12-year-old son to a football match between Millwall and their rivals West Ham United. The match ended in a 3-0 victory for Millwall and it was then the NGO began taunting the West Ham supporters, most of whom were members of West Ham's football firm called "Greet Street Elite" - also known as GSE in short.

Thereafter the GSE's founder and leader, Steve Dunham, decided to retaliate against Tommy's firm by ambushing them after the match; Steve's ambush resulted in the two firms engaging in an all-out brawl that culminated with Tommy's son trying to escape due to his father continuing to fight, only to get knocked down and inadvertently killed in the process despite Tommy's attempts to rush to his safety. Following his son's death, Tommy grew profoundly vengeful with his son's death and he developed a personal hatred towards the GSE - swearing revenge against Steve and his firm over the death of his son.

History[]

Ten years after his son's death, Tommy was first seen with his gang entering a Chinese cafe. It was there he encountered Bovver, a high-ranking GSE member who had earlier arranged to meet Tommy for reasons that initially appeared unknown. It soon turned out that Bovver did this because he had started to feel excommunicated from the GSE ever since Steve's brother-in-law, Matt Buckner, had been recruited into West Ham's firm; Bovver had grown suspicious towards Matt due to the latter coming from the United States. Although skeptical of Bovver's motives for approaching him, Tommy insultingly took his request for a partnership into consideration.

They were about to settle an agreement when Tommy grew incensed by a pair of customers who appear to be dating. Tommy eventually confronted the couple and ordered them to shut up. When the lady counterpart tried to stand up to him, Tommy viciously attacked her fiancé George by repeatedly slamming his head on the table a few times. Bovver is appalled and attempts to stop this, but is stopped by Tommy and he reluctantly backs down. In that moment, however, Tommy is told by his gang to leave so that the police don't respond to the scene he has caused; Tommy reluctantly complies and leaves after coldly bidding Bovver a morbid farewell.

A few days later, Tommy is working in his car garage and learns from the sports radio that Millwall have drawn against West Ham in the FA Cup Quarter Finals. This pleases Tommy, as this means that he now has the opportunity to get revenge on the GSE for causing his son's death. Thereupon he summons his gang to their pub and they begin discussing their plan to take down GSE. Later that night, Bovver visits Tommy again and informs him Steve Dunham is spending time with the GSE at their pub. This motivates Tommy into launching an arson attack at the GSE's pub along with his faction, though not before he betrays Bovver by having his right-hand man knock him unconscious.

As the NGO launch their arson attack against the GSE in their pub, Tommy confronts Steve for the first time since their last encounter a decade ago; Steve attempts to appeal to Tommy's nature and even apologize for his son's death, but Tommy tells him it is too late and they end up fighting. The confronation ends with Tommy mortally wounding Steve by stabbing him in the neck with a broken bottle and sadistically telling him that they'll be even should the latter die of his wounds; moments later, Tommy and his gang are forced to flee as the police arrive on the scene. The aftermath of the brawl sees Steve recovering in hospital, where Bovver's betrayal is discovered by his best-friend and Steve's brother Pete - also the GSE's newly leader; enraged that his friend's jealously over Matt led to him working with Tommy to eliminate Steve and the GSE at all costs. Pete angrily berates Bovver for his betrayal and disowns him as his friend.

The next day, both Pete and Tommy simultaneously assemble their firms for a confrontation at the Millennium Dome; where Tommy and his faction await for the arrival of Pete and the GSE. When arriving, the two sides glance at each other before charging towards the other to instigate the final confrontation of the movie. While the GSE and NTO fight each other, Pete and Tommy engage in a one-on-one brawl in which Tommy gets the upper hand when he breaks Pete's leg. He then prepares to finish him off, but is suddenly attacked and brutally beaten by Bovver. As the brawl continues, Matt's sister Steve's wife Shannon arrives on the scene to rescue her brother from the chaos. Tommy, having been pulled to safety by his right-hand man, soon notices this and has his right-hand man attack her; Shannon quickly retreats to her car with her and Steve's infant son Ben, though the duo are saved when Matt and Bovver beat Tommy's right-hand man into submission.

Tommy then heads on to take care of this himself, only to let his guard down when Pete attempts to provoke the latter into finishing him off. At first Tommy ignores Pete by telling the latter that he is already finished and that the NGO will win against the GSE, but then Pete ends up telling Tommy: "We didn't kill your son Tommy, you did! You should've protected him mate - he was your son!". Pete's words hurt Tommy's feelings so much that he finally snaps and brutally lashes out at Pete, tackling the latter to the ground and proceeding to beat him up; Tommy ultimately kills Pete as he continues his beating whilst tearfully ranting his variation of words to the chant "Only a poor little Hammer".

Eventually, Tommy is pulled off by members of his firm just as both the GSE and NGO halt their fight to stare at Pete's now-deceased body. It is unknown what happened to Tommy and his firm, but it is implied that they got arrested and sent to prison for their crimes or they likely escaped to avoid getting caught by the police again.

Personality[]

Tommy is portrayed as a ruthless, violent, sadistic, cold-hearted, heartless and psychopathic hardman who was completely prove to violence and revenge against the Green Street Elite; all was proven in the scenes whereupon he repeatedly slammed an innocent man against a table in a cafe in front of his wife due to the fact that he grew incensed by them while they appeared to be dating, vengefully stabbed Steve Dunham in the neck with a broken bottle during a riot in his pub before heartlessly telling him that his death makes them both even, and even resorts to murder Steve's younger brother Pete by brutally beating him to death during the final confrontation between the firms of both Millwall and West Ham.

In contrast to his insanity, it was shown that it had only escalated when his son was inadvertently killed during a previous hoolganism between the two firms; proving that he did love his son in the past, thus being the sole reason why Tommy despises the GSE and is purely motivated by revenge against the firm. However Tommy himself can be considered the true resonsible for his son's death as bought him to a vicious hooligan match where he had no chance to survive instead of leaving him at home or put him in a safe place like any responsible father would do. Pete points this out to him before dying.
