There's only one thing that gets orders and gives orders. [points to Tommy Gun] And this is it. That's how I got the south side for you, and that's how I'm gonna get the north side for you. It's a typewriter. I'm gonna write my name all over this town with it, in big letters!
~ Tony's most famous line

Antonio "Tony" Camonte (sometimes known as Scarface or Cabrone) is the titular protagonist villain of 1932 crime film Scarface.

In his characterisation, he is a gangster who formerly served as the right-hand man and bodyguard of gangland boss Louis Costillo; that was until Camonte had betrayed Costillo, killing him and proceeding to work for fellow crime boss Johnny Lovo for a while.

He was portrayed by the late Paul Muni.

Biography[]

Tony Camonte is first seen as he guns down his gangland boss Louis Costillo after the rest of his collegues left an all-night party, leaving Costillo's corpse on the floor. Costillo was the last of the old-fashioned gangleaders, and so his death started a gang war where everyone who could afford a gun tries to shoot various people. A newspaper with the headline, "COSTILLO MURDER TO START GANG WAR!" is published, but Tony Camonte -- who's in a barber's chair -- isn't nervous her guilty in the least, with his right-hand man Guino Rinaldo close by. The "coppers" arrive to apprehend them and take them to police headquarters to be questioned, but Camonte simply calls the police chief "that kidney foot" and strikes his wooden match on the cop's badge to light his cigarette. The two gangsters are dragged off to the police station.

In the police station, Camonte's long criminal record is read by police chief Ben Guarino. Camonte denies everything and claims he was innocent of charges of turning traitor to murder Louis Costillo. The Chief suspected that Camonte has working with Johnny Lovo, a fellow crime boss who was Costillo's gangland rival. He was seen being paid by Lovo the previous night at Spinetti's Barber Shop. The brutish Camonte, with stunted speech, denies any implication. Then, Lovo's counsel Epstein presents the Chief with a legal writ of habeas corpus for their release, allowing Tony release from custody, but not before Guarino prophetically warns of Tony's inevitable undignified downfall.

Tony would visit his new boss Johnny Lovo and explain how he was released on legal writs, while lusting over his mistress Poppy. Tony was proud of his newfound fame and would cash bonus for "a fine job" and is enticed to seek greater wealth and power by 'playing square'. Lovo tells Tony that his plans are to expand into the Southern half of town, but they had to avoid encountering O'Hara, with Johnny insisting that Tony let Johnny do the planning. During a brief car ride with his friend Guino, Tony shares part of the bonus money for killing Costillo. Camonte wants to expand his influence and "run the whole works" - he espouses his motto and philosophy, viewing his boss Lovo as soft, and mainly wanting to stay out of trouble.

In his immigrant home, Tony's peasant Italian mother made dinner for Tony. Tony's angry that his strong-willed sister Cesca isn't home for dinner. But then catches his attractive sister kissing a suitor in the hallway and chases the young man out the door as he was extremely possessive of her honor and sexuality and wants to control her. Cesca stands up to her brother and denounces his kinky dominance that doesn't permit her to have any "fun". He places a wad of bills in her hand as his idea of "real fun", which their mother witnesses. Cesca thanks him, but Mrs. Camonte criticizes him for being "crazy" and warns Cesca that Tony had no genuine love for her and to not get too indebted to him.
