Commander Toreth is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Face of the Enemy".
She was portrayed by Carolyn Seymour, who also played Taris in "Contagion" and voiced Queen Myrrah in the English version of Gears of War.
Biography[]
Toreth was a Romulan commander in charge of a warbird. She had an intense dislike of the Tal Shiar, since her father had once been arrested by them and disappeared. When Counsellor Troi came aboard her ship posing as a Tal Shiar officer, Major Rakal, Toreth was hostile towards her but reluctantly accepted her order to bring aboard three crates and transport them to the Kaleb sector without any information on their contents. (They actually contained a Romulan senator and his aides, who were defecting to the Federation.) Toreth invited Troi to dinner where she made a point of telling a story about how faulty intelligence led to the Klingons destroying half her squadron only for her to rally and win the battle, with her being decorated and the intelligence officer being executed. She expressed the opinion that the military needed to trust each other while the Tal Shiar trusted no-one and saw only enemies.
Arriving in the Kaleb sector, the ship was met by a Corvallen freighter who was supposed to transport their cargo. However, Toreth's first officer, Sub-Commander N'Vek (actually a member of the Romulan reunification movement), suddenly fired on and destroyed the ship, killing all eighteen people aboard, and stated that "Rakal" had ordered him to do so. (In fact, Troi had simply said the Corvallens didn't intend to deliver the cargo.) Troi claimed she had recognised the Corvallen as a Federation agent and ordered Toreth to set course for the Draken system, even though it would mean travelling through Federation space for several hours. Toreth doubted Troi's claim that she could shield their cloaked ship but reluctantly gave the order.
Before they could depart, however, the Enterprise arrived on the scene, investigating the destroyed freighter. Since her ship was cloaked, Toreth attempted to slowly move out of the system. However, when the Enterprise began moving towards them, she realised they could see through the cloak. She prepared to attack but Troi accused her of risking their lives with flawed tactics and relieved her of command. She then contacted the Enterprise and convinced them to lower shields, before giving the order to open fire. N'Vek made sure he fired on reduced power and used the weapons fire as cover to beam the three defectors over to the Enterprise. Toreth realised the deception and accused both Troi and N'Vek of being traitors. N'Vek went to shoot her but was killed by one of the bridge crew. Toreth warned Troi she would soon be executed and gave the order to head for home. She was unaware that the Enterprise had already established a transporter lock on Troi. As soon as Toreth's ship cloaked and the shields were lowered, Troi was beamed aboard the Enterprise.
