I am Torgo. I take care of the place while The Master is away!
~ Torgo

Torgo is the secondary antagonist of the 1966 horror cult-classic, Manos: The Hands of Fate. Torgo was also featured in the 2018 sequel Manos Returns, and a recurring character on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

He was portrayed by the late John Reynolds in Manos: The Hands of Fate (in his only film role), Michael J. Nelson in Mystery Science Theater 3000, and Steven Shields in Manos Returns.

Biography[]

Sometime (likely years) before 1966, Torgo became the servant to The Master, likely meeting him at his lodge after needed help - though, this isn't confirmed.

His primary job is to take care of the lodge while The Master is away.

However, despite Torgo seemingly being faithful to The Master, he soon becomes very jealous of the amount of wives The Master has, desiring one for himself. He would make regular trips out to The Tomb where The Master and his wives slept and worshipped the God Manos. Once there, he would touch the wives inappropriately, with the wives later informing The Master of Torgo's behavior.

When Michael, his wife Margaret, and their daughter Debbie arrive at The Master's lodge after getting lost, Torgo greets them and tells them about The Master. He tries to warn them off, saying that The Master would not approve of the family being there. However, after Michael's car won't start, Torgo decides to let them stay for the night, and also helps Michael put their luggage up.

Later in the night, Torgo knocks Michael out with his staff after finding him wandering in the forest.

At the lodge, Michael's wife Margaret starts getting ready for bed by undressing herself, when Torgo starts creeping on her through her window and watches her undress. Margaret freaks out, and Torgo starts fondling with her hair. Margaret screams for Michael, to no avail. Torgo then tells Margaret that The Master wants her as his wife, but that Torgo wants her for himself, and promises to protect her. Torgo convinces Margaret to not tell anyone about what happened.

Meanwhile, The Master's wives are holding a debate over what to do with the new arrivals, whether or not to kill the child, Debbie. It soon broke down into full contact nightgown wrestling. While this was going on, The Master confronts Torgo after finding out that he is keeping Margaret to himself and was bad-mouthing The Master and his wives. The Master decides to end Torgo's services. Torgo says that he will help the family escape, and go against The Master's wishes, but The Master hypnotizes/brainwashes Torgo before he can make good on his words. It's also implied that The Master killed Torgo with his hypnotizing powers, then possibly resurrected Torgo afterwards due to the fact that The Master claimed that he would kill Torgo right before seemingly hypnotizing him, though this is not clear.

Shortly after, The Master brings Torgo back to The Tomb. He lays him down on his bed-like structure, and has 2 of his wives "massage" him to death. The Master then drags Torgo over to the fire, and forces him to stick his hand into it, which causes Torgo's hand to burn off as a sacrifice. Torgo then runs off into the night, and isn't seen in the rest of the film (not counting the end credits).

At the end of the film, The Master catches up with Michael's family, and makes Margaret and Debbie his new wives. A few days later, a couple of women arrive at the lodge, and are greeted by Michael, who has now taken Torgo's place as house-watcher.

Torgo was later resurrected, and continued to serve the cult. After Margaret stabbed Debbie, Torgo helped a young woman escape from the cult's new compound, before disappearing into the night yet again.

Mystery Science Theater 3000[]

Torgo also made several appearances on Mystery Science Theater 3000 as a recurring character.

Following Joel and the bots screening the film, Torgo was revealed to be working as a pizza delivery driver. It took him over two hours to deliver the pizza to Deep 13. When TV's Frank and Dr. Clayton Forrester realized how he kept the pizza warm, they spit it out. Torgo remarked they always did that.

Torgo's last appearance was in the episode "Samson vs. the Vampire Women". By then he was an angel known as Torgo the White and now had two fully functional knees instead of satyr-like legs. He transported Frank into Second Banana Heaven, where Frank was safe from Dr. Forrester.
