~ Toshizou Shundou |
Toshizou Shundou is a major antagonist of the A Certain Magical Index franchise, serving as the overarching antagonist of the Mental Out Arc in New Testament and the Astral Buddy manga series.
He is a researcher and the mastermind of the Ideal Project, which was intended to create the perfect esper ability. After getting caught in an explosion, Toshizou's conciouness was transfered to the body of a Killer whale. He later becomes hellbent on stealing Misaki Shokuhou's esper ability, Mental Out, to use for his own purposes.
Appearance[]
Prior to transfering his mind into a Killer whale, Toshizou was a middle aged man with short, wavy light-colored hair and thick dark eyebrows. He is seen wearing a vantablack shirt with a snakeskin tie underneath a white lab coat and a pair of black trousers.
Personality[]
Toshizou Shundou is an ambitious yet callous scientist with a blatant disregard for the lives of others. To that end, he's quite willing to manipulate and discard people for his own selfish needs. He is obsessed with obtaining Mental Out from Misaki Shokuhou and will do anything to achieve his goal of creating an functional Mental Out FIVE_OVER, even if it means sacrificing her or others in the process. Toshizou also desires to create the "ideal" esper ability, one with zero flaws or weakness.
He's also very arrogant and egocentric, as shown when he mocks Noukan Kihara and underestimates him due to him being a dog despite being a member of the Kihara Family and a renowed scientist. His arrogance and ambition are shown to be his downfall when he's quickly killed by Noukan.
Biography[]
Toshizou Shundou was the director of Ideal and financially funded by a member of Academy City's governing board. After a failed experiment that led to the deaths of many, Toshizou was warned by Noukan Kihara to not upset the city's ruler with his actions. However, he didn't take the warning seriously but he was blindsided by his benefactor after he pulled all funding for the project due to a deal struck with Misaki Shokuhou.
At some point in time, he became the representative for a group of researchers who wanted to create a fully functional FIVE_Over Modelcase of Mental Out. He would later make contact with a gang known as Deadlock and had them try to abduct Misaki so he could obtain Mental Out. He provided them with the Queen Diver, a device which was intented to counter Misaki's ability. However, Toshizou and his group would later get caught in a highly unusual explosion. It's heavily implied by Noukan that this was an attempt to kill Toshizou and was masterminded by the Kihara Family.
While his human body was destroyed in the explosion, Toshizou managed to survive and gathered the fragments of his brain. He then made several sacrifices in order to get the perfect animal that had a brain that would accept his. In the end, he transfered his conciousness into the body of a killer whale residing in the Celestaquarium. He would later come across Ayu Mitsuari and manipulates her into stealing Mental Out for him so he can finally create the Five Over.
Abilities[]
Molar Tooth: During his battle with Noukan, Toshizou used the Molar Tooth, a large spherical weapon that can float using jet propulsion. It's described as as a wrecking ball flying around without a crane. It can be used to block things from simple bullets to a shot from a tank's gun, and even as a powerful psychological weapon as it "pours mental pressure" onto its targets. Against Noukan, Toshizou had over 30 Molar Tooths.
