We whirl the world, the world we whirl...
~ One of Beaufoy's insane ramblings.

Toussaint Beaufoy is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 horror survival game Amnesia: The Bunker. Before the events of the game, he was a loyal soldier of the French Army during the first World War. However, during the game's events, he has lost his sanity, rambling incoherently and becoming increasingly hostile.

He was voiced by Philippe Spall.

History[]

Likely born in France at an unknown date, Toussaint was likely conscripted into the French Army at another unknown time. Not much is known about his personal life, as only limited information during his time in the French Army is known. He held the rank of "soldat", which is similar to the rank of private.

Before the events of the game, he and four other soldiers were part of a tunneling project, but decided to do some sabotage. They stole explosives from their own bunker and caused an explosion that was not authorized by their superiors. This explosion compromised the bunker's structural integrity, causing the exploded area to flood. This did, however, create a path to underground ancient Roman ruins. Part of these ruins seem to be fused with another world.

This "other world" is the same dimension that has been mentioned and seen in previous Amnesia games. The saboteurs were captured and imprisoned, but Toussaint somehow evaded capture, and remained in the ruins. Due to the supernatural nature of the ruins, and possibly the stress of avoiding the beast that systemically killed soldiers in the bunker, Toussaint was driven mad, even removing his own eyes.

Given the sound of his voice and stature, his age may be around the 30s or 40s.

Events of Amnesia: The Bunker[]

Just before Henri Clément - the main protagonist of the game - enters the Roman Tunnels, he finds two eyeballs sitting on a table, obviously belonging to Toussaint. Upon entering the ruins, Henri encounters Toussaint in person. Toussaint is constantly spouting nonsense and firing his shotgun at anything he hears, making him a formidable foe.

Since he is completely blind, he will rely on sounds to find the player. He will sometimes sense the player if they are close enough, even if they're not making any noise. If the player is clever, they can use him to blast open locked doors, saving on resources. Henri can simply kill Toussaint in self-defense, or just avoid him. If he is left in the ruins, his fate is unknown, although it is possible he starves to death. It is also possible - albeit unlikely - that the German Army finds Toussaint after Henri escapes the bunker.

The Beast did not frequent the Roman Tunnels like it did the rest of the French bunker. This is very likely why Toussaint had been one of the few survivors in the game. Inside the ruins, there are silhouettes of ghouls and wraiths walking around the place aimlessly, appearing and disappearing. Among these silhouettes are duplicates of Beaufoy himself, albeit without a shotgun. This is likely due to the mentally-displacing, otherworldly nature of these tunnels.

Personality[]

Vision's gone and gone's the vision. Vision's gone and gone's the vision...
~ One of Toussaint's ramblings.

It is unknown what Toussaint's personality was like before losing his mind. It is possible he was a loyal soldier in the French Army before his insubordinate actions. At some point, he and a few other soldiers took part in a sabotage, causing damage against the wishes of their superiors. Due to his time in the Roman Tunnels, and being exposed to many otherworldly elements there that had mind-altering properties, Toussaint eventually lost his mind.

Despite being somewhat uncommunicative and hostile, his speech is largely unaffected, as he can still speak coherently, although he only rambles in nonsense. When hearing the player, he will sometimes speak in a faux-friendly, sarcastic manner, asking where the player is, or for the player to come back.

Even though Toussaint is completely blind, he can navigate the ruins with hardly any trouble, as he doesn't bump into anything or struggle going from room to room. This may be because of how much time he's spent in the ruins. He also has impressive marksmanship for a blind person, even if the player is a long distance away.

Toussaint's insanity reaches beyond the point of reacting to pain normally, as he will continue his murderous intent and insane ramblings even after taking significant damage. He will briefly retreat elsewhere after receiving damage of any kind, then soon continue patrolling the tunnels for any unfortunate intruder. The nature of Toussaint's ramblings would indicate that he "guarding" the tunnels, as he will sometimes say, "These are their tunnels." Possibly hinting that he's protecting someone or something belonging to the Other World.

Trivia[]

  • The removed eyeball models belonging to Toussaint were originally planned for Terry Akers in the 2015 horror survival game SOMA, another game made by Frictional Games. Beaufoy and Akers are also very similar in nature, as they are both enemies in their respective games, and both removed their own eyes in a moment of insanity, leaving them to track their targets by sound.
    • They are also somewhat similar to the Suitors in the DLC of the first Amnesia game, Amnesia: Justine, as both are also blind enemies. However, the Suitors being blind was due to Justine Florbelle torturing them, not in a moment of psychotic self-harming.
  • If subtitles are turned on, his name will appear as "Unknown", leaving it up to the player to figure out who he is through the use of in-game notes.
