~ Travis justifying teaching his son Wayne to rape. |
Travis Hankett is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Wannabe". He is a sexual sadist who makes his son Wayne flash and rape little girls and record it so he gratify himself to it later.
He was portrayed by Raymond J. Barry, who also portrayed The Sensei in Gotham, Caleb Warrens in the Purge film series, Chester Hoenicker in Flubber, and Dante Wallace in The 100.
Early life[]
Travis is a sadist who, in his younger days, habitually raped girls and young women. He also brought prostitutes home and forced his son, Wayne, to watch while he had rough sex with them. He physically and emotionally abused Wayne, calling him a failure who would never amount to anything, and even blaming him when his wife, Wayne's mother, died of cancer. When Wayne was 12, Travis brought home a prostitute to "break in" his son, but Wayne could not perform with his father watching, which only inspired Travis to treat his son with even greater cruelty.
He owned an electronics store for 35 years, and used his own surveillance equipment to record himself raping his victims. As he grew older, however, he lost the ability to get an erection, and so ordered Wayne to flash and rape little girls and record the assaults so Travis could masturbate to them later on. Desperate for his father's approval, Wayne did as he was told, even though he knew it was wrong.
By the time of the episode, Wayne had raped four little girls and flashed several others, all at Travis' behest.
In "Wannabe"[]
After Wayne is arrested for indecent exposure and attempted rape, Travis reluctantly bails him out of jail. The charges against Wayne are eventually dropped because the arresting "officer" Brad Fletcher, is not really a cop, but a high school student posing as one.
After Wayne is released, Fletcher breaks into Travis' house, where Wayne lives with him, in hopes of finding new evidence against Wayne. Fletcher walks in on Travis masturbating to a recording of one of Wayne's rapes, and is so frightened and disgusted that he freezes up. When Travis sees Fletcher, he chases after him with a shotgun and shoots him in the back. He is arrested for attempted murder, while Wayne is once again arrested after Detectives John Munch and Fin Tutuola of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit find his secret hidden camera, given to him by Travis, with recordings of the other rapes.
Both father and son are taken in to the SVU station house, where Detective Elliot Stabler questions Travis and Detective Olivia Benson questions Wayne. After Wayne tells Benson about Travis made him rape his victims, Stabler confronts Travis, who claims that Wayne is lying. When Stabler shows him the recordings from Wayne's camera, however, Travis says that he was trying to help Wayne, who he says "couldn't get a girl any other way".
As Stabler takes Travis into custody, they run into Wayne, who apologizes to his father for telling on him and says he loves him. Travis, however, responds with his usual cruelty, telling his own son that he should have aborted him. He is then imprisoned for facilitating rape.
