~ The Tree Librarian cornering Jamie and Anais. |
The Tree Librarian is a minor character in the Cartoon Network animated sitcom The Amazing World of Gumball. She is the librarian at Elmore Jr. High School with a passion for books, and serves as the main antagonist in the episode "The Buddy."
She is voiced by Maria Teresa Creasey, who also voices Jamie Russo in the same series.
Appearance[]
She is a large, anthropomorphic tree with a thick, light-brown trunk forming her body. Her hair resembles a dense green canopy, almost like the top of a broccoli head or bushy tree foliage. She has furrowed brows, large oval eyes, and short, branch-like arms extending from her sides, each ending in a white glove. She has visible roots near the base of her trunk, spreading outward like feet. A small red tag is attached to her torso.
Her design resembles classic rubber hose animation, and it is also layered with a grainy film texture.
Personality[]
The tree librarian is usually portrayed as a somewhat wise, nurturing character who finds joy and excitement in watching students enter the library. She feels a quiet satisfaction, believing they seek comfort in books despite the digital age, unaware that they're actually there to play video games. However, she also shows mild impatience and a dry-witted demeanor when confronted with students who take advantage or show no appreciation for the library and its resources. She consistently values the rules of the library, insisting that everyone, including herself, remains quiet.
However, she is shown to go to extreme lengths to encourage reading. In "The Buddy," she crafts a scheme to infect all the library computers with viruses by visiting illegal websites, determined to push students back to books. Later, she even attempts to harm Anais and Jamie for trying to stop and expose her, ready to kill them and hide their bodies in a secluded part of the library. This scheme also shows her technical savvy and ability to plan elaborately.
Biography[]
The tree librarian first makes minor appearances in the episodes "The Blame," "The Fury," "The Nuisance," "The List," and "The Awareness," having replaced the old librarian.
Her first and only major role is in the episode "The Buddy." It starts with Anais and Jamie called into Principal Brown's office, Anais puzzled as to why they were summoned. Principal Brown, irritated, informs them that a computer virus was found in the library that rendered all of the computers useless. After leaving the office, Anais suggests teaming up with Jamie to uncover the true culprit, and in the library, they discover a number of infected computers and a security camera.
In Principal Brown’s office, they review a fuzzy security tape. After Jamie intimidates the monitor, it clears up, revealing Bobert in the library. They head to the playground to question him, but as Bobert begins to explain, someone throws a dictionary at him from a window, caving his head in. They open it to find a warning: "Give up... or else."
Returning to the library, they ask the tree librarian who last checked out the dictionary. She responds via notes, revealing that Gumball and Darwin were the last borrowers. Jamie notices that the handwriting on the note matches the threatening message in the dictionary and hurls the book at the librarian, realizing she is the culprit. The librarian then tries to attack them, prompting Jamie to retaliate by throwing small books, which prove ineffective. Anais grabs a classic novel and uses it to conjure fictional weaponry. The three engage in a literary battle by using books, the likes of which cast magical attacks pertaining to the content of the given book, wreaking havoc in the library in the process. The librarian eventually corners the duo, insists that they will perish here, and confesses that she sabotaged the computers because no one was checking out books, making her job redundant. However, Anais ends the fight by knocking her out with a large study guide, and her and Jamie later exit Principal Brown's office after getting off the hook. The tree librarian is then left to pay for the damage she did to the computers.
She then makes brief appearances in "The Inquisition."
