The Tree of Men is a minor antagonist and boss in the video game Salt and Sanctuary.
Biography[]
Long ago, the Red Hall of Cages was used by the Red Lords for the torture of their enemies and prisoners. At the center of the dungeon was a massive amalgamation of chains referred to as the "Tree of Men", given how victims hanged from the contraption's limbs like fruit from a tree. After the dungeon was transferred to the island by the Nameless God, the Tree of Men then obtained sentience from the souls of the undead prisoners who haunted the dungeon. It cursed the Red Hall with fiery mechanics and traps.
The player encounters the Tree of Men at the end of the area. It takes moderate damage from all attack types except for slash attacks, which it strongly resists. In the first phase of the battle, the player must attack the Chained Men on the Tree of Men that glow red. The tree stays still, only shooting fireballs from its "head". On the platforms, the player must be cautious of the fire traps that set the platforms on fire, and they might temporarily break. Once all Chained Men are defeated, the Tree of Men activates with its head as the last weakspot. It attacks by punching the player with its limbs on the platform they were last standing on. When it hits less than 10% of its remaining health, the tree spews flames from its head across the platform. When it does this, the head is bowed down, leaving it vulnerable. Once the head is destroyed, the Tree of Men collapses and breaks down. It drops its ashes and opens the way to Hager's Cavern.
