Trismegistus, better known as H. T. Trismegistus, is one of the main antagonists of the light novel series A Certain Magical Index: Genesis Testament. He serves as the secondary antagonist of the Transcendent Saga, specifically as one of the main antagonists of the New Year's Arc.
Named after the hellenistic figure and founder of Hermeticism, Trismegistus is a powerful magician known as an Transcendent and the second-in-command of the Bridge Builders Cabal, as well as the butler of Alice Anotherbible. Although Alice is the de facto leader of the Bridge Builders, Trismegistus is effectively the founder. He initially gathered them together, he chooses replacements and additions as necessary, and he is the primary driving force behind their goal to summon Christian Rosencreutz.
Appearance[]
Trismegistus is a black-haired young man, described as a gloomy butler. He wears an old-fashioned black coat with a brown lining, a light blue tailcoat, a white inner shirt, a brown cravat, dark grey trousers, white gloves, black shoes and triangular brimmed hat. He also has a black cane, less than a 1m long, hiding a sword.
Personality[]
Trismegistus is a calm, polite and benign gentleman who diligently serves Alice Anotherbible, essentially acting as her butler and caretaker. He is shown to be considerate towards others, even going of his way to prevent Misaki Shokuhou from reading Alice's psychedelic mind, knowing that it would drive her mad. However, he will become incredibly ruthless and murderous towards anyone he deems as an obstacle or a threat, willing to go all out and release his seal to destroy them. He also has no qualms with killing the other Transcendents if he determines them to be a dangerous element.
Moreover, Trismegistus is extremely pragmatic and amoral, claiming that his actions are based on what views as "common sense" which he frequently incorporates in his speech. He utterly despises anything that would distort or violate his own perception of "common sense", such as emotions, morality, superstitions etc. In addition to this, he is quite self-righteous, fully believing that the Transcendents should deal salvation evenhandedly.
Unlike his fellow Transcendents who obey Alice due to fear of her powers, Trismegistus is deeply loyal to Alice and genuinely cares for her, willing to follow her to the very end, and will not forgive anyone who harm her in any way. Furthermore, as per his salvation conditions, Trismegistus is willing to help anyone who meets his exact requirements for a salvation candidate.
Biography[]
Trismegistus's full history prior to joining the Bridge Builders Cabal is currently unknown, not even his real name has been revealed as yet. However, his obsession with "common sense", his mentions of the Plank of Carneades and how superstitions creep into academia and distort common sense, and remarks on how no matter how logically one explains their academia theories there was nothing one could do when people brush them aside based on emotion gives us a glance on what led him down his path. At some point in time, he found Alice Anotherbible on the streets and took her in.

- Transcendent Magic: As a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal, Trismegistus is an immensely powerful magician, able to rival the normal magic side by himself. As his namesake suggests, Trismegistus mainly specializes in Hermetic Magic, though the full scope of his powers haven't been displayed as of yet.
- Risk 4: Like his fellow transcendents, Trismegistus can draw on great power that transcends that of normal humans by releasing his numberless seal with an incantation involving the declaration of "Risk 4" and "departing human territory". His own power takes the form of a 'triumvirate of supreme beings'. By invoking the names and powers of two gods which correspond in Liber 777 into his right and left hands and forming a triad from hands and body, Trismegistus can apply a false definition into the world that he is now a god, turning him into a new false supreme being. When doing so, the initials of his name will change to symbolize the two deities he is channeling such as Z. I. Trismegistus (short for Zeus Indra Trismegistus) or O. M. Trismegistus (short for Odin Mercury Trismegistus). Depending on the combinations of these gods, the properties of his magic (e.g. fire, light, water, crystal etc.) change.
- Nigh-Immortality: Trismegistus is shown to possess some form of immortality or regeneration, as he's was casually able to reconnect himself after being split half down the middle.
- Dimensional Storage: Trismegistus can produce various objects out of thin air in a manner resembling that of a stage magician, as well as making them disappear again, presumably using the storage compartments hidden within his cloak. The objects he has produced include cleaning tools, a leather notebook, numerous movie pamphlets and TRPG rulebooks, a handkerchief, detergent, a dryer, an iron, a leather jacket and a long, narrow adult-sized coffin with slits for stabbing swords into.
Abilities[]
- Gifted Intellect: Trismegistus is highly intelligent, being extremely knowledgeable in magic and the occult. He's quite tactical in battle, often analyzing beforehand to get a better grasp of his opponent. He is also the mastermind behind the Bridge Builders Cabal and serves as the true leader in place of Alice.
- Immense Charisma: As with the other transcendents, Trismegistus is very charismatic and is capable of influencing society or creating new trends. He proves to be quite persuasive, as he managed to convince Misaki Shokuhou to not read Alice's mind.
- Common Tome Creation: Similar to the other transcendents, Trismegistus can translate and synthesize his speech into unfamiliar languages.
- Master Swordsman: Trismegistus is shown to be very skilled in iaijutsu and other sword-drawing techniques and can make his slashes take complex paths. He also bypassed Good Old Mary's defensive forcefield by applying a cutting edge to an electric field in the air.

- Cane Sword: Trismegistus wields a spiritual item in the form of cane-sword as his main weapon. He is shown to be highly skilled with the cane sword, rapidly unsheathing it from its scabbard and slashing, in the manner of iaijutsu. The slashing attack is extremely fast and very difficult to avoid, as displays when he was able to cut a fellow Transcendent, Aradia without even her noticing. Furthermore, the direction of the projectile slash is not always straight and can be altered. In addition to this, Trismegistus can infuse his blade with various phenomena that can have a variety of devastating effects, such as explosions, random things getting sliced in half and water jets. Trismegistus was able to cut Accelerator's prison to pieces with his Cane Sword, despite it being very durable as it meant to counter Accelerator's Vector manipulation abilities.
