The Troll King, or simply referred as the Troll, is the titular main antagonist of the 2022 action adventure monster Netflix movie of the same name.
He was once the king of an ancient species of trolls who, long ago, was lured and left for dead in the Dovre mountain by Christians during the Christianization of Norway and is depicted as (presumably) the very last of them after his race are wiped out. Years later, when workers were building a road through the mountain where the Troll King was trapped in, explosives woke him up, causing the giant stone creature to start making his way to Norway's capital, Oslo, while causing both indirect and direct destruction and casualties. Although not necessarily evil despite being a destructive man-eating beast, the Troll King actually turns out to be an ultimately intelligent, normally peaceful creature who simply wanted to be reunited with his family, even though they are already deceased.
Physical Appearance[]
The Troll King appears to be a giant-sized, bald, humanoid creature with a stout yet muscular build, skin made of earthen matter, a large bulbous nose typical of Scandinavian mythological trolls, and body hair - tail and huge beard in particular - made of plant matter such as roots, branches, and twigs. Only his eyes, sharp teeth, and internal organs that truly organic by contrast. Nevertheless, his external physiological feature proved beneficial while camouflaging.

Past[]
Many years ago in Norway, Trolls were once an ancient, peaceful species that wandered freely around the country, and the Troll King was the ruler of his race. However, when Christianity came to the country, the Catholic Church declared the Trolls unholy creatures and decided that they should be exterminated, and the ruthless and devout King Olaf II, nicknamed the Saint, led the extermination against the trolls in order to help in the Christianization of Norway.
The Troll King and his kind were expelled from his palace, which Olaf II turned into a cemetery for the trolls he murdered over the years, including several of the Troll King's children. To get rid of the Troll King, Olaf II captured his only remaining living son and used him as bait to lure him to Dovre Mountain, where he buried them both, leaving the trolls without leadership.
However, Olaf II changed his mind and regretted his cooperation in the extermination of the trolls, so he issued an edict: for the crimes committed against the trolls, the killing would cease, and they would be granted a land of their own, a place they could call home. However, the Church and fanatical elements did not want this, as they believed that the trolls were enemies of God simply because of their lack of faith. So they assassinated King Olaf during the Battle of Stiklestad and tore the decree in two, keeping one part that seemed to indicate that the trolls should be destroyed, while burying the other, the part that spoke of giving them their own land, with the king's own body.
With Olaf out of the way, and twisting his words, the Christians exterminated as many trolls as they could.
Unfortunately for them, some imprisoned trolls, including the Troll King, went into hibernation instead of dying as their enemies expected, waiting until the day they would awaken and perhaps take revenge on those who massacred their kind.
Troll[]
In the present day, a group of workers started a drilling operation through the Dorve mountain which involved the usage of explosive, much to the protestors' horror. The produced explosion awakened Troll King who then emerged from the mountain, indirectly killing the workers and some protestors as well as leaving a giant footprint in the process. As the Norwegian government struggled to figure out the cause of the incident at Dovre mountain, the Troll King accidentally demolished a house belonging to an elderly couple (who luckily took refuge in their basement in time) in half with his foot. This incident would be investigated by Captain Kristoffer Holm.
After Nora Tidemann, Captain Kris, and the prime minister's advisor Andreas Isaksan, recruited Nora's father Tobias Tidemann for the investigation of the recent incidents, Tobias asked the helicopter pilot to go down to an area where he noticed a topographic anomaly. After talking with her father, Nora noticed a smell she thinks "hypernatural", the same she smelled at the elderly couple's house, before the Troll King suddenly wakes up and emerges, thus revealing himself to the group. Nora, Tobias, Andreas and Kris managed to flew away from the Troll at time, but not before the creature bellows at them, moments which Nora took in order to record the Troll.
Despite insisting the creature seen is a Troll, Tobias was quickly dismissed as "crazy". Later, Nora had a talk with him, insisting in turn that he should stop with his "fairy tale". Tobias then tried to make Nora realize that the Troll King will always return to strike, no matter if scared with weapons or pushed around. They then decide to join Kris on a night strike operation decided by the military forces.
The Troll King eventually shows up at night and is attacked by military weapons, all of this being supervised by the government. However, none of this worked since the Troll King is impossible to wound or kill as his wounds are shown to instantly regenerate. The creature then responds by destroying all the tanks, killing most of military forces. When Kris, Nora, Tobias and Andreas are hiding alongside a bleeding Christians soldier, the latter's panicked prayer brought the troll's attention to the group, much to Tobias' horror that he rallied them to bail out as soon as possible. True to this, the enraged Troll King swoop his hand at their location, managing to devour the same soldier as they watched in horror. Against the military's judgement, Tobias attempted to talk to Troll King only to be accidentally swatted aside with the latter's tail because he turned around to destroy a nearby machine gun truck. Remorseful over the accidental murder on Tobias who could only tell his daughter that she had to believe, Troll King look on in sorrow before leaving.
On the next day, the Troll King arrived at a theme park in Norway, examining paraphernalia within and unwittingly scared the visitors. Just then, helicopters led by Kris and Nora arrived with church bells to fend off him off as per the knowledge of how Trolls in general hated the sound of bells. Though such tactic momentarily worked as Troll King kneeled and covered his ears in great discomfort, it backfired spectacularly with him having enough by tossing the ice cream truck nearby at one of the helicopters resulting it to crash. Grabbing the second helicopter, Troll King used it to smash the third as an improvised club before unexpectedly catching the debris before it could crush two humans who caught in the crossfire below. After making sure the two were unharmed, he glared at the last helicopter Kris and Nora on board before departing.
The news about Troll King's destructive advance toward Oslo eventually spread all over the world. Prime Minister's dismissal of Nora and Andreas' advices regarding the best course of action against the creature, as well as indifference to the latter's resignation resulted the two suspecting the government of Norway more interested in hiding some dark secrets which explained why it both defamed Thomas and came up with the idea of destroying Troll King with nuclear strike. Nora and Andreas' suspicion proved correct as she discovered a secret burial chamber beneath Royal Palace of Oslo where Troll King's kin being buried at and that the Palace was built at the place where Troll King's palace used to stood at. Though disheartened by Chief of Court Rikard Sinding' confession regarding such dark secret, Nora nonetheless understood that Troll King sought to return home.
When the Troll King finally arrived at Oslo, Nora, Kris, and Andreas had set up a trap to properly stop the creature with Sigrid hacked into the military's system to halt the nuclear strike thus allowing their plan to proceed at its earnest. In order to lure him, Nora and Andreas used the skull of one of Troll King's offspring which they carry with the Queen's truck through the city as a bait. Such part of the plan didn't go smoothly because the two accidentally dropped the skull leading to Troll King retrieved it. As the realization of the bitter end of his kin and the prospect of being the last of his kind dawned upon the sorrowful Troll King, he accidentally damaged the building's glass through which he gazed upon his reflection and then, his deceased offspring's skull by mistake. In his vengeful grief, he noticed Nora and Andreas nearby and give chase. But when he finally reached the two, the rest of the strike force under Kris' command reveal themselves armed with tanning beds to bombard the creature with UV lights, slowly petrifying him. Seeing the now helpless Troll King roaring in pain, Nora rushed to deactivate the beds and pleaded to the creature to return to the mountains, promising that he would be in peace there. Sadly, that was the moment the sun rose into a clear sky and fatally petrified the creature with Nora could only comfort him in his last moments.
In the aftermath of the incident, Nora decided to have the area surrounding boulders Troll King's corpse petrified into named "Tobias Boulder" to remember her father who fought to prove the existence of Trolls despite the odds against the government who sought to keep it a secret due to their past association with Christians which responsible in both their attempted genocide in the past and warping their image. Despite the initial assumption of Troll King being the last of his kind, Nora and Andreas, who opted to follow his original dreams to be a writer, speculates that there might be more of his brethren hidden somewhere.
Unbeknownst to everyone, the son of the Troll King, who had survived along with his father, finally awoke beneath Mount Dovre.
Troll 2[]
When facing another member of Troll King's brethren who, unlike his leader, much more motivated by revenge against humanity, Nora and co. later learned about Olaf the Holy had a change of heart regarding how to deal the trolls and wanted them to be banished at their designated sanctuary in Jotunheimen. However, the plan fell through because Christians who insisted their extermination assassinated him for the perceived betrayal, leaving Troll King's brethren no choice but to scatter and remain incognito. The vengeful troll, nicknamed Megatroll, were among those who escaped the massacre.
In the same search, Nora and co. finally awakened Troll King's son — whom Nora called Bautiful — who indeed laid in dormancy alongside his father long ago in the hopes of him reasoning with Megatroll. Unfortunately, they learned in hard way that Jotun couldn't be reasoned with, soundly defeated Beautiful in each confrontation. It took the group and Beautiful's joint effort along with Andreas' sacrifice where he used the last of holy water-filled explosive Jotun was finally defeated.
Personality[]
On the first glance, Troll King is an aggressive and violent creature who wreaked havoc upon being awakened from his slumber, mercilessly retaliating against those who attacked him. Much like mythological Scandinavian Trolls, the scent of Christian blood and sound of church bells provoke him most to attack, the former fact Nora and co. learned in hard way when he swiftly devoured a panicked Christian soldier. That's not to say that he's a malicious and unreasonable being; it's clear that his willingness to hear Tobias and later, Nora out in their respective attempt to pacify him and saving two humans caught in the fight at a theme park that he's a gentle and intelligent creature doesn't want to engage in conflicts nor harming anyone who stands in his way for his home. That being said, the anger he expressed upon finding Nora and Andreas using his offspring's skull and aforementioned hatred toward Christians in general showed how justified his fury and sorrow in the light of attempted genocide on his race in the past.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Troll Physiology: The Troll King belonged to an ancient, peaceful species of Troll that wandered freely around Norway and has several physical attributes that surpasses that of most other members of his kind.
- High-level Intellect: The Troll King is an extremely intelligent creature. For example, he clearly recognizes Christians as threats, but does not attempt to harm or kill some other humans that he comes across, even going out of his way to save a boy and his parent from getting crushed by a helicopter.
- Supernatural Strength: Due to his giant size, the Troll King displays immense physical strength, allowing him to dispose of tanks and helicopters by crushing them both with his hands and feet.
- Supernatural Resilience: The Troll King is shown to be incredibly durable, making him impossible to wound or kill as he can withstand military weapons such as tanks or bazookas, which serves only to anger him. However, as the Troll King is extremely resilient, he is still vulnerable to light or sunlight which can petrify and kill him.
- Supernatural Endurance: Despite having destroyed many things along his way and receiving many hits from military weapons, the Troll King is never seen exhausted as he can walk for long periods of time due to his slow movements.
- Camouflage: The Troll King has skin made of stone that allows him to blend in perfectly with his surroundings, shown when he is able to camouflage himself as a pile of rocks rather than seeking a place to hide (something he couldn't do due to his enormous size).
- Accelerated healing factor: If injured, the Troll King's metabolism enables him to rapidly regenerate damaged bodily tissue much faster, enabling him to heal almost instantly from any wound caused to him, which makes any attack to him useless. Unfortunately, this doesn't protect him against UV lights nor sunlight.
- Enhanced Senses: The Troll King possesses acute senses, especially his powerful sense of smell and hearing. This enables him to smell Christian blood nearby, shown when he ate a Christian soldier after detecting his presence by smelling his blood.
- Prehensile Tail: The Troll King has a long, prehensile, clubbed tail that he can use as a dangerous and lethal weapon to hit or smack his attackers. His tail is also powerful enough to kill a human, shown when Tobias was accidentaly hit by it before his death.
