The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, also known as the Tropas, are supporting antagonists in the Call of Duty franchise, appearing as a hostile force in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The Tropas are also a playable faction in the multiplayer of Black Ops, and appear as a enemy faction in Call of Duty: Online.

Biography[]

The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces was formed in 1959, and Prime Minister Fidel Castro became the First Secretary of the military before the events of the Black Ops series. The Cuban army was supplied financially by the Soviet Union during the Cold War, giving them military capabilities and equipment to fight against the United States.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

The Tropas first appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops, appearing as a hostile faction in the game's first mission, "Operation 40". Castro met with Soviets officers Nikita Dragovich and Lev Kravchenko, making an alliance with the two who proceeded to build their underwater numbers broadcast station. During the Bay of Pigs invasion, the CIA decided to plan another assassination attempt on Castro, and sent Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Joseph Bowman to work with Op40 and eliminate the prime minister. The group at first met with Carlos to see the plans, and were forced to fight Cuban police to reach to their destination. Though the team at first believed they eliminated Castro, it was revealed that Castro had a body double in his place. Despite the United State's attempts to overthrow Castro, they failed and were defeated within three days, thus straining Cuban and American relations.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War[]

The Tropas return in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, appearing as the primary hostile faction in the mission "End of the Line". The CIA believe that the Soviet spy Perseus is receiving help from Castro, as the Cuban prime minister possibly wants to the see the Greenlight nuke Perseus stole from Berlin. Russell Adler and his team are given the authorization to stop Perseus from arming the nuke with the sleeper agent Theodore Hastings, and assault a compound in Havana that is filled with Tropas soldiers. When Adler and his team learn that Perseus had Hastings arm of the Greenlight nukes stationed across Europe, the team leave the area, but the Tropas managed to either eliminate Helen Park, Eleazar "Lazar" Azoulay, or both as "Bell" is left to choose.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

The Tropas return in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, appearing as a minor hostile faction in the mission "Pyrrhic Victory". By the mid-1980s, Castro and the Tropas assist the MPLA, the South African armed forces that fought against the UNITA during the Angolan Civil War. When Alex Mason and Jason Hudson rescue Frank Woods from a cargo barge, they come across Tropas soldiers training children to wield assault rifles. After the mission, the Tropas don't make another appearance, but did succeed in helping the MPLA defeat the UNITA.

Trivia[]

The term "Tropas" means "troops" in Spanish and Portuguese.
