~ Trouble Bruin, introducing himself to Dynamite Headdy before battling him in the Japanese version |
Trouble Bruin, also known as Maruyama in the Japanese version, is the secondary antagonist in the 1994 video game Dynamite Headdy.
He is Headdy's most recurring archenemy, and is fought multiple times throughout the game in different forms, typically via one of his inventions (where his last contraption went haywire and berserk due to the charging beam falling off once Trouble Bruin tried toying with the opportunity to kill Headdy, which backfired and the two have to run away from said contraption in the stage "Far Trek"; which Headdy and Bruin run and Bruin tries to hug onto Headdy and slow down Headdy to no avail, and the laser shooting from the contraption eventually slows down Bruin and gets him stumbling during his attempted escape and stumbles behind with the collapsing contraption; which is how he is defeated after his series of encounters he made with Headdy).
Appearance[]
Trouble Bruin is an anthropomorphic Bear-puppet that strongly resembles a feline (to of which many people thought he is a cat, despite his triangular ears, catlike face and sounds). His face and color look different depending on the version of the game. In the American version he is brown mixed with orange and has an angry looking feline expression, while in the Japanese version he instead is purple and has a happy feline expression.
Personality[]
Trouble Bruin is often power-hungry, mischievous, overconfident, malicious, sadistic, egocentric, thrill-seeking showoff, although he remains loyal to his master. When he was given dialogue, he exclaims his sadistic plans with such over-inflated pride with battling and stalking Headdy wherever he goes in sneaky ways, which also suits his jealous and competitive traits with an arrogant side to his role as a persistent rival who stops at nothing to stalk, one-up, and eliminate Headdy so he could take away Headdy's fame and become the star of the show despite Bruin's numerous failings, he nevertheless has a strongly envious side towards Headdy to the point of wanting to bring inconveniences to him so Trouble Bruin can be more successful than him.
His form of narcissism is expressed even further in the first level "The Getaway", where the level ends with him putting on a show and attempting to attack Headdy head on. As well as "Concert Panic"/"Backstage Battle", having him revel in his sadistic plan of offing with the robotic claw he trapped Headdy on, as well as deploying drones at Headdy that are designed after his face while riding a hovercraft.
He completely despises Dynamite Headdy since he is more popular than him. He wishes to exterminate Headdy and claim his fame. His role as an assassin was also dropped from the Japanese version, instead becoming a jealous, persistent and eventually, an incompetent rival to Headdy in the US version, thus making him something of an obsessing nuisance towards Headdy.
Quotes[]
“ | Maruya. Kuma. MARUY-AMA. | „ |
~ Trouble Bruin's very words during his USA theme song at "The Getaway"; the "Maryua" voice sample is often mistranslated to sound like a meow. |
“ | Oops! | „ |
~ Trouble Bruin, getting hit, often mistranslated for "Puss" or "Bous" |
“ | Bwahahaha Surprise! You probably thought that you beat me last time. I was a little unprepared back then... ...but this time will be different! I don't know whose concert hall this is, but it will be your graveyard! Lets go! | „ |
~ Trouble Bruin to Headdy at "Concert Panic" |
“ | Who dares to trespass my hall!? Hey, you're the scrap puppet who escaped... What in the world could that good-for-nothing bounty hunter be doing? Well, it doesn't matter. I will capture you and claim the reward from the Emperor myself. | „ |
~ Trouble Bruin at "Concert Panic" |
“ | Bwahahaha! Now you've really made me angry! The time has come to put a end to your little adventure. What a pathetic hero, to have your story end backstage like this. Let's begin the next scene right now! It's time for Dynamite Maruyama's entrance! | „ |
~ Trouble Bruin to Headdy at "Backstage Battle" |
Forms[]
- Kuma Body: His default form. He is fought at the end of The Getaway. He attacks by pulling in orbs and jumps a few times before attempting to ram into Headdy. If the player manages to dodge this move, he will crash into the wall and will catch his breath. He will be vulnerable at this point.
- Octopus Trap: His first form. He has several different weapons that he uses for attacks. But he never gets the chance to use it, as he is soon crushed by Mad Dog before he can fight Headdy.
- Rocket Grappler: His second form. He is fought in Backstage Battle. It has a claw at the rear end of it's "tail" which he uses to grab Headdy so the fight can begin. He will spawn smaller versions of himself that will attempt to hit Headdy. After that, he swings Headdy across the room, leaving him vulnerable to attacks. He will then attempt to drag Headdy across the ceiling and floor.
- Flying Scythe: His third form. He is fought in Stair Wars. He will fire one of his scythes to knock off three stairs of the level in an attempt to make Headdy fall. After a random number of times, he will attempt to ram into Headdy. This will be the player's chance to hit hime, though he can only be hit once each time he does this.
- Wheeler Dealer: His fourth form. He is fought in Fly Hard. He will again appear in the background and shoot out bombs which can be shot at. Once he reaches the center, he will move into the foreground, leaving him open to attacks. Every time he raises his head, a plasma ball will move in the direction Headdy is in. After he reaches the right, he will leave two electric balls that will make an electric wall if one or both of them is destroyed in time. If enough damage is dealt to him, he will shoot out his bombs at a fast pace before crashing into a "Stop" sign, ending the battle automatically.
- Super Finagler: His fifth and final form. He is fought near the end of the game. He will shoot out plasma balls after charging them. The machine cannot be destroyed, forcing the player to climb up to the top while avoiding to be crushed by any walls. Once they reach the end of the level,Trouble Bruin will attempt to finish off Headdy, but the machine malfunctions and attacks both of them. They flee to the next level while the machine chases after them. If Trouble Bruin touches Headdy, he will grab onto him for dear life, slowing the player down significantly. The player must hit him off before the machine hits them. After enough time, the machine will break and Trouble Bruin will stumble about. The player will then be able to fight Dark Demon, the final boss of the game. He is seen again during the credits.
