The True Sons of Antar are secondary antagonists in the Star Trek: Enterprise novel Rise of the Federation: Live by the Code.
The True Sons were a group of extremists that hated all Denobulans and despised the Antaran government for its outreach to Denobula.
History[]
In the 19th century the Antarans and Denobulans fought a series of wars that left millions dead on both sides. The two races eventually ceased their conflict and went out of their ways to avoid each other for the next few hundred years. By the mid 22nd century it had been many years since an Antaran and Denobulan encountered each other. That changed in 2151 when the United EarthStarfleet vessel Enterprise rescued an Antaran, bringing him face to face with the ship's Denobulan physician Phlox. The two faced their deeply ingrained prejudices, which eventually led to the two races beginning to reconcile with each other. As the Antaran government worked to improve relations with the Antarans, the True Sons came into being and set about trying to wreck relations between the two worlds.
The Denobulan anti-Antaran extremist Mettus murdered the Antaran politician Sohon Retab after Retab's son married Phlox's daughter Vaneel - the first known marriage of a Denobulan and Antaran in history. A group of True Sons traveled to Denobula and attacked the prison where Mettus was being held, breaching the prison and kidnapping Mettus. During the operation one of the True Sons was captured and was quite happy to volunteer that he and his compatriots hated Denobulans, were planning a show trial for Mettus, and would put him to death after the trial.
With the Denobulan government unwilling to intervene, Phlox traveled to Antar and met with Antaran forces. Phlox accompanied these forces on a rescue/capture mission.
Meanwhile the True Sons set up a venue in ruins in the Enphera Desert with a number of cameras to broadcast the proceedings not only to True Sons leadership, but also to the citizens of Antar. They were about to execute Mettus when Phlox showed up and pleaded for the life of his son. This gave the Antarans the opening they needed to storm the trial and capture the entire group. Phlox took a blast meant for his son, but otherwise there were no serious injuries and no fatalities.
Furthermore, the Antarans were able to trace the signals being broadcast by the cameras to the True Sons headquarters where many of its leaders were holed up. They swiftly launched a raid that resulted in the capture of the True Sons of Antar leadership, largely crippling the organization. Phlox was successfully treated for his injuries while Mettus was taken into custody. Mettus found the prison and the Antaran people to be completely different than what he had been led to believe. Seeing how much his father was willing to risk on his behalf and admitting his own many failings led Mettus to forgive his father after years of silence and anger.
